What should I buy in August to get my watch fix? AKA, do I really drink too much?

I'm still trying to save up for my upstairs remodel.  Been trying to save for a long time.  But, you know, life sucks, and the only 2 things that provide respite from the constant misery are:  1) alcohol, and 2) watches.

Unfortunately, my wife pointed out to me that I was drinking too much.  2 drinks per evening?  And each drink is 2 servings of alcohol?  Well, okay...  a little bit more than that when we're being social, or if I have a day like this with my kids...

Image

But, is that too much?  Too much?  Do you have any idea how much people used to drink???

Image
Image

She said, "How in the world did I end up marrying an alcoholic?"  Now, she said this while laughing.  Nonetheless, I could read between the lines.  I mean, she's worried because her dad is the highest functioning alcoholic I know!  Dude will drink 2 bottles of wine in a given day, 8 days a week!  And, well, he just gets a little forgetful and tells the same rambling story over and over again at the dinner table.  That's not so bad, right?  I mean, when I was growing up, my uncle used to get drunk and then beat us kids!  Whatever.  Par for the course in a childhood as a first generation immigrant!

Me?  Here's me when I have a few drinks...

Image

I mean, who doesn't love drunk me? Everybody loves drunk me!

Anyway, I've been on a clean and sober kick lately, just to prove to my wife that I ain't an alcoholic.  Which leaves watches.  Yay!  Except I gotta save for the upstairs remodel...

Image

So, to get my fix, I figure I'll allow myself 1 fun, relatively affordable purchase each month.  Here's what's on deck...

Option #1 - Seestern S434

Image

Lovely homage (ripoff) of the GO SeaQ.  But, blue or green?  Check out that wonderful skindiver aesthetic!  Also, maybe this will scratch the itch I suddenly have for the Seiko SPB143.  Recently, I've decided that the Watch Enthusiast Community is evil.  It convinced me to get a smaller sized watch, the 37mm King Seiko SPB279.

Image

I love the finishing, I love the retro looks, I love everything about it...  except its size! It's too small!  Been thinking about trying to trade my King Seiko for an SPB143.

Image

SPB143 has a 40mm dial and it's nice and thick at 13.2mm!  I like BIG WATCHES, and I cannot lie.  The rest of all y'all enthusiasts talking about how great these smaller watches...

Image

Option #2 - Pagani Design 1733

Image

LOVE the Milgauss Z-Blue.  Not enough to actually buy one.  But, for ~$100, happy to get the Pagani Design!  Besides, it would give me an excuse to write up a review / post I've always wanted to write about how EVERYTHING in life is about brand, and EVERYTHING we enthusiasts talk about (specs, heritage, etc.) are all lies we've convinced ourselves to believe in, to better lie to others...

Image

Option #3 - Delugs straps

Image

Rubberized leather?  Yes, sign me up!  I mean, my SBGE201 is HUGE at 44.2mm diameter and 14.7mm thick!

Image

The perfect size.  The only issue is that its stainless steel construction results in a 177g weight, and so it's like wielding a brick on your wrist.  Gotta have a nice rubber strap to tightly affix it, to prevent the watch head from flopping around and braining someone accidentally.

And the chunky green Delugs crazy horse strap...

Image

... would go wonderfully with my SLGA015!

Image

Option #4 - Christopher Ward straps

Image

Who doesn't love a good Camel colored vintage-looking strap?  Goes well with anything, no?

So, which option is the right option?

Here's the poll - I'm gonna end up getting whatever polls highest, because I don't have a brain of my own, and I just do what other people tell me to do...  like when my wife indicates that I should stop drinking so much.

See, you could always sell your King Seiko to me and then buy an SPB143. Net zero!

Ha! Actually, I just might take you up on that! I had no idea you coveted the King Seiko!

So... if I sell you the King Seiko, and use the proceeds to get the SPB143... does that mean I can no longer get the Seestern? Because I'll have already scratched the skin diver itch???

Also, let's do the following:

To consummate the deal, we gotta meet up at Toppers in Burlingame... so that in addition to handing over the King Seiko, you can also buy your Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda Micro-Rotor...

I can also assure you, the day I buy that PF, I won't be buying another watch for quite some time!

·

I gotta say, though, I didn't start drinking till I was 40. I have no idea how I've lived all this time without it!

·

Straps ain’t gonna do it…gotta get a watch…the home stuff and cars are always tugging me away from the watches understand that dynamic for sure…voted for the Seestern…giving up the wine??? Not sure I’d survive

Ha! Yeah, unless you have a watch that you simply don't wear that often, and then a strap just completely transforms it, you're right that straps aren't gonna really tide you over!

Recently, I got this chunky strap for my SBGE201, and it's finally given me a super comfortable but secure strap for this big a$$, heavy watch!

Image

I'm hoping that maybe like 2 weeks sober, and I can prove to myself adequately that if I'm not grumpy for lack of alcohol, then I can go back to my cocktails!

💯 as many folks here have noted a strap can make a watch just right…looks, comfort etc…that being said your new career as a YouTube strap unboxer…ehhh not sure it’s gonna fly…gotta see that shiny piece of metal to get the juice!

Oh, dude, you wanna know drink is the absolute best, if you like martinis?

Try a Vesper with blue cheese stuff olives - but really good blue cheese olives. Like fresh blue cheese olives. Like, from a hoity toity fromagerie. God... I'm gonna have one this weekend.

Vesper

2 oz Gin

0.5 oz Vodka

0.5 oz Lillet Blanc

Lemon peel

And, you get to feel like you're James Bond at the Casino Royale, while sipping it!

·

You had me at Vesper. I once had a tasting contest of vespers vs proper martinis — 3 to 1 and must be gin (Plymouth preferred). I was told it did not end well. As for olives, blue cheese is not my thing. I opt for Castelvetrano or Goya Manzanilla (that’s right)!! 😀

·

Rubber straps for the lugs.

·

I had no idea you were into the SPB143! I finally gave up on that craving for a SPB187, which if you like big watches the MM200 style may suit you more...just saying...

2 drinks a day doesn’t sound bad to me. But if you’re prone to getting hooked then good to be wary. I get sick AF if I drink more than 1 or 2 daily so nature prevents fragile me from going overboard

Super weird that Mao is now worshipped in China? He killed like 40 million of his citizens 🤯🤔. Makes Hitler look like a softee. Too weird.

The Milgross is maybe the best? Shameless and will be constantly mistaken for the not Chinese variant. It’s going to offend every AD you visit 😂

Another option: Dude, buy my Rado! It’s a badass diver as well.

It’s way outta your budget at 2k USD (perfect 👌), a big ass 43mm, full ceramic (light : between steel and Ti in weight, but doesn’t get hot or cold like metal) and keeps almost GS accuracy.

Yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The whole Nazism versus communism thing has always thrown me!

If you say that you’re an avowed Socialist / Communist, you can be a celebrated presidential candidate!

Image

Say that you’re a Nationalist Socialist, and…

Image

But… but… the former killed 100M innocents in the 20th century, while the latter killed 1/5th that number. So, from a purely utilitarian perspective, the former is 5x as evil as the latter!

And, yet, like 25% of American professors self-identify as Communist!!! How crazy is that???

I read once that the demon Moloch, that our Judeo-Christian tradition vilifies, was actually a Canaanite god! Like, if your tribe goes to war with a rival who represents an existential threat, you turn EVERYTHING about them - their beliefs, their gods, their traditions, etc. - into a symbol of evil. You can NEVER say anything nice about the Canaanites! They believe in using wool for pants? Wool pants are evil!!!

So, you know, we never got into a hot war with the Communists. Instead, during WWII, the Nazis persecuted Communists… and all the Communist intellectuals came to America and took up positions in our universities!!!

“What? Communism brutally murdered 100M innocent men, women, and children? Oh, push posh! Real Communism has never actually been done before. All the other experiments were just poorly executed and perverted by Capitalist stooges.”

·

Sounds like your August buy needs to a handle of gin and another of vodka. 😂

·

Two drinks/day is a 5th a week.

By the time I hit my fifties, two of my childhood friends already drank themselves to death…so I quit and have never looked back. That shit pickled them into human-sized gherkins.

I used to work in the heart Cath lab and alcoholics (those who drank a few bottles of hard stuff per day) often had a strange combo - perfect coronary arteries, but near dead myocardium.

Sure it beats up your liver but in sufficient quantities it seems to also pop a cap in your heart

A true alcoholic drinks mind boggling quantities

·

Will the purchases truly replace the alcohol!? Or are you going to end up with 24 shitty watch straps AND a divorce on the grounds of alcoholism?

My vote is a nice ABP Concept leather strap.. Go for a pre-made one for the same as CW. OR, go for something a little more personalised with their bespoke stuff..

Why have you decided to sell your Captain Cook, by the way?

·

I like all of your choices! If it were me, I’d go for the Seestern blue. I’ve been eyeing that one since you brought my attention to it two months back. I have a rule for myself…. Don’t press the watch buy button after a half bottle of wine… wait until morning. I’ve had a few regrets. Only problem with that rule is it has so far effectively been delaying my purchase of an SBGC253, which has an upside in that Japanese yen has been falling against USD while I hesitate. 🍻

·

I wear my watches super toight, and high on my wrist. Need a PERFECT fit.

Image

U can see the tan line above

having a just a thin layer of skin (no facia or connective tissue) over my ulnar and radius bones, I haven’t been able to get the perfect fit over my micro 5.99 inch wrist.

(My thin fragile wrist is another reason why Ti, carbon, and ceramic are better than steel!)

And - it doesn’t have a date! 😣

Those 2 stikes are too much to handle, so I’m sadly dismissing one of my most badass and interesting looking watches.

The gold/ black ceramic Rado and the Seiko alpinist Ginza are the only 2 watches of mine that ever get muggle compliments

Oh, dude!!! I just saw the SBGC253 last week at an AD. It is sooooooooooo awesome! I mean, it is the thickest watch I have ever seen in my life, and I absolutely adore it for how subtly in-your-face it is. I mean, it's a contradiction, but somehow GS have managed to create a watch that is both wildly understated and wildly overstated at the same time!

I just checked on Chrono24, and yeah, you're totally right! I think it's gone down by like $1,000 compared to when I last looked!

Finally, I just pulled the trigger on the blue Seestern!

Have you considered putting it on a strap? I mean, I've found that I can always get a much more comfortable fit with straps than with bracelet. But, if you prefer bracelets in general, then that ain't gonna be a workable solution.

It’s a ceramic integrated - one of the highlights of the watch is its bomb proof unscratchable bracelet. I don’t think it’d work. Plus - want to put into a new watch fund !
