Watches & Blunders: a tier list

Took a hot sec to get my thoughts together on the last couple of frantic weeks.

Also being accused of "copying" Nico Leonard this morning is a personal milestone ๐Ÿ˜‚.

What's your fav from the show? Anything change your mind after seeing it IRL?

Looking forward to visiting Zenith for the new Pilot!

Giving IWC a run for their money ๐Ÿ‘

I do not like Rolex, at all. I don't own one and I don't aspire to one. That said, the celebration OP and the puzzle Day Date are just super cool watches to me. I would certainly put them in the like category if not the lust. As someone who owns neon yellow and pink watches in their collection, I would certainly rock these.

That said, the watch of the show for me was the new IWC Ingenieur. Cost be damned. I'd get that aqua blue dial all day long. I think the polished center links on that watch completes the look. I wonder if you can special order the polished center link bracelet for the white or black variants?

ยท

I love the suggestion that you just threw the video together in an hour ๐Ÿคฃ

Damn, they think you are gooood.

ยท

Copying Nico? More like great minds think alike. Happy Easter Max!

ยท

Great video Max! I can't believe we only agree on one watch, the Chopard. I guess that's why Baskin-Robbins make 31 flavors. LOL!

I love the Rolex puzzle just because its the most unRolex, Rolex Ive ever seen. Love the GS, hate the size. I reserve judgement on the 54 until I see it in the metal.

The YachtMaster just doesn't make sense to me. When Rolex unveiled it, the watch was supposed to be the dressy Submariner. It wasn't made for the boat, it was made for the clubhouse. If there's such a thing in yachting.

Everything else was Meh.

ยท

Agree: Chopard, it's a very pretty and classy watch. The BB54 is meh incarnate. The Ingenieur is really only for those who wants an IWC Ingenieur. The head scratching Rolex M&M special edition is truly bizarre.

Disagree: I don't like the Cartier tank and making it squat again isn't helping to make it prettier. The GS Tentagraph is worse than meh because it looks like a basic Prospex, just without the ugly logo - GS could and should have done better.

On the fence: Rolex 1908. I don't do dress watches very well but this one is OK. Oris Kermit is kinda cool but it's unfortunately like a stuck up guy trying to tell a joke.

Being compared to Nico the salesman? Oh dear...

For me, the Rolex seem to be a surefire collectors item. I do recognize my watch history. That said, goddamn it's hard to read the time on those.

I on the other hand love the BB54. It appeals to the stealth wealth snob in me.

The Oris Propilot X Kermit....if only they decide to use another colour for the indices.

I appreciate that you frame this topic as your personal take on the aesthetics rather than as the all too frequent prominent talking head "knowing better" than everyone else. It's always funny to hear a content creator spend the bulk of an episode slagging a watch in an effort to trigger the negative rewarding algorithm then closing with some variation of wear what you love. I think the more secure an enthusiast is the less important it becomes to have others validate one's take on what the watch looks like (specs are a whole different subject.)

Did you know the blue ingeniuer has a different finished bracelet? ๐Ÿ˜

Great point about the titanium YM, it looks like a more rugged sub at this point. Still hate the name

Yep, just my hot takes ๐Ÿ˜

I'm happy to see a wider range of videos from people whose personalities I can actually tolerate. No shade at Nico, I just don't like his style (but ofc many thousands do!)

ยท

I've mentioned it before, but I think the Kermit is a genius level move. No matter what happens now, when people get droning on and on about a Rolex Kermit or Cermit, someone will inevitably post that Oris makes the "real" Kermit.

Rolex is just putting out watches they thought you wouldnโ€™t expect.

I hate the culture of limited additions, it takes away the pressure to do anything truly great. Rolex knows they will sell a few thousand of anything they make so thereโ€™s no downside to these watches you know wonโ€™t see multiple production years. Now if they had to make something interesting that would sell for 10 years, what would they come up with?

Oh, and I donโ€™t see whatโ€™s so amazing about they ICC or Cartier. Literally everybody has the exact same watches on their list of what was impressive this year. Weโ€™re there truly no hidden gems?

a 39mm Riviera was released by Baume and Mercier which is a nice watch for the budget conscious consumer. It is powered by the same base as the Ingenieur. I still want the IWC (as seemingly a lot of people do) but I have seen few content about its little cousin which actually celebrated 50y (1973-2023).

ยท

I enjoy your watch reviews more than Nico; however, you could have at least selected a different color scheme for your tiers๐Ÿ˜€ my fav is the new Ti Yacht Master. I'm a bit of a Yacht Master fan having both the 40mm Rhodium and 42 White Gold, but I have a 7.7in wrist. I think the emoji day date (Autism awareness watch)is an interesting buy, future value, if you could actually get one.

Max, great video. I really enjoy watching your YouTube video - informative, down-to-earth, and fun. From the 2023 W&W releases I really "lust" over the 1908 and the Chopard. I agree IWC Ingenieur is way overpriced @11K-12K range. As for BB54, I still prefer my BB58-925. I like the GS gold version of SGBA413 ( I have one) but I am sure the price-tag is hefty...

You copying Nico? Not until you add CASIO as GOD-TIER!!! hahahaha

Keep up the good work!

Haha, I'm trying hard not to say God tier in so my videos ๐Ÿคญ

I didnโ€™t see the B&M, but Iโ€™ll check it out. The thing I donโ€™t get about the IWC is why now? This integrated bracelet sports watch thing has been going on for a few years, why are people so jazzed about IWC showing up with this now? Seems a little out of touch like they were making sure everyone really really wanted this type of watch. If I had something like this designed by someone like that, Iโ€™d have produced it right away.

Ha, I spotted the colours as well ๐Ÿ˜€

I don't think it would be a good idea to use a different colour scheme for the tiers. As a content creator and forum host in the watch space you'd want the Nico Leonard crowd clicking on your video and I would say it is more likely if the recognise something they can disagree with (like your tiers). This seems very popular, so it's clever click bait.

I think the previous integrated one didn't sell. So they got rid of it. Then they realised the replacement sells even less, so they decided to bring it back. Incompetence goes a long way towards an explanation here I would say.

They seem to have hired a new CEO, which is no wonder given how someone before killed their golden goose, (although I am not sure about the timeline) who appears to have misjudged the corporate overhead (and level of incompetence) in thinking they could make "a few quick changes"... said changes took 6 years. For what it's worth, he did admit that the watch was being worked on for quite a while.

The Zenith Pilot looks just right . The Carrera Chronograph looks great too though my skinny wrists seem to love 36 - 39 mm watches . I actually canโ€™t wait to try on the BB 54 . I am hoping they do one in blue in the near future . I do like the BB steel bezel watches so I would love to do a wrist comparison to see as well which one I would pick . I like plain watches because over time you tend to appreciate them more as they become part of your persona (MPO) great breakdown thanks Max . I am mostly in agreement with your summations too :)

ยท

I love Grand Seiko but for some reason whenever I try them on they donโ€™t give me that special feeling. Maybe itโ€™ll take the right model but something just doesnโ€™t click.

ยท

Def agree with you tier man, that Rolex puzzle and balloonโ€ฆ I mean really? I lost a bit of respect with that concept. And Nicoโ€™s got nothing on you! ๐Ÿ˜œonce your screaming at the camera then weโ€™ll talk lol

ยท

Not that Iโ€™ll ever be able to even come close to affording it, but I felt like JLC knocked it out of the park with the reverso chronograph! Curious to see where that would have fallen on your tier list.

Agree with you for BB54 is Meh, meanwhile The GS rosegold is Lust

IWC really really humiliated themselves with the pricing of the Ingeneur. Literally every influencer in the watch enthusiast sector, the people that made the IWC Ingeneur happen, are saying IWC cannot command such price. Itโ€™s really self humiliation from a brand many weโ€™re starting to like and respect.
