Dress Duel: Omiwatari vs. Ultra thin

Whew, barely got this one done in time!  Thanks guys for all your comments on the last thread, I've tried to incorporate your deep pontifications into the video. Do you agree with the conclusion?

Omiwatari should have won!!!

(Even though I, myself, am not into the Omiwatari, 'cause otherwise I'd have already bought one, right?  And, also, even though I've never even seen a JLC in real life.  But, being an ignoramus somehow does not preclude me from having a strong opinion on the Internet!)

Haha, sorry to disappoint "GrandseikoNut".  Maybe on the next round of GS price increase, the perceived value will get us there 😉

·

Great comparison, and my compliments to your videographer!

·

Great vid! Very well done and appreciated…Thanks!

·

Definitely a tight call. I’d edge out in the way of the Omiwatari…if only they’d do away with all that blasted unnecessary text painted on that sacred surface. Just logo and name and we can leave the rest of it for the case back. I can see the Spring Drive working, leave it on the back. I know where GS is made, proudly place it on the back.

Thank you sir 🙏

·

Thanks for the video! I liked the head to head format and the length

·

I don't know man...if you're going to call a tie on dials, there was no way for the GS to win.

·

Well done video, I agree with the call. Probably because my GS watches are such great everyday wears, I have a few others in my ‘special dress’ category. Top of that list is by recently refurbished Girard Perreguax, which was also my first ‘luxury’ watch, so I have a personal bias. I know a gold watch is not for everyone, but just like in your video, my comment and I get to break any ties!

That is GORGEOUS.

The JLC moon phase is one of the best executed 🤷‍♂️

·

When you first posed the question I was Team JLC.  After watching the video I am leaning GS. I like the shorter lug to lug and that case is a more refined version of what was popular in the early 70's.  That style of case wears so comfortably. You are right that the GS seems sportier.

I am now famous like @Omeganut . Thanks for the shout out.  I hope that the 1WC has been fun to participate in and watch from the bench.

Well done.

I mean if we're going to nitpick, @Max   called the movement for GS which I feel is wrong as well.

I love love love spring drive but I feel like if you set aside that specific tech, there's a pretty big gulf in movement finishing and beauty.

Point is, we all are very adamant about our correct opinion on super subjective things.

No doubt.  just saying it’s tough to lose the category you’re strongest in.

And because I didn’t mention it earlier, thanks for the video, enjoyable as always.

That’s a fair point. I’m not sure I was clear with my comment. I wasn’t saying he was wrong, just commenting that’s a tough loss for GS as dials are arguably their best attribute.

as for the movement, I guess it depends on what you’re rating. To me, the JLC looks prettier and the GS is more interesting.  So i could see either winning depending on the criteria.

I think I 100% misinterpreted your comment (sorry, my bad!).  I think I get what you're saying and mostly agree.  The best attribute of most grand Seikos is the beautiful dial.  Without that (and to be clear, it's probably the single most important attribute to me for any watch), they're going to punch below their weight.

The judge made the correct call.

I’ll point out that the moon phase may be one of the most useful complications in the world since so many things tend to recur in approximately 29 day cycles. Also, it matches my dress shirt.

When the internet was a simpler place...the Three Wolf Shirt. I now have the urge to reread a 100 Amazon comments.

Haha, no worries, you guys are hilarious. The internet turns every topic into a meme. Love you guys 🙌

I have so much love for both brands, and in respect to dress watches (and I know the Reverso is historically a sports watch) I had to have both :)

Ultra sexiness!!! 🥰

·

I had the Omiwatari in my radar but thanks to your video I’m obsessed now, if only I had short of $9.000 burning in my pocket 🥲

So basically, thanks Max, my wallet really didn’t need another watch to obsess over.

·

I know WatchCrunch is full of GS lovers, but I have to say JLC hands down every time for me. The price to value ratio of JLCs cannot be beat.

Let's face it, if you want to rate a movement based on its accuracy alone, then the Apple Watch beats all of them. I still don't want one on my wrist.

The JLC movement is technically and aesthetically the better movement. However, I do agree that I would give the dial points to GS.

Great video - more please.

Let's see a face off of a Parmigiani against a GS in the same price range.

·

For me, the mark of a good dress watch is thinness. Making an ultra thin movement that is both robust and accurate is still a challenge for many watchmakers. The base movement in the JLC Master Control moonphase is the cal. 920, which measures only 2.45mm thick with a full rotor. Even with an additional module on top, which makes the cal. 925, for the moon phase and calendar complication, the movement still only measures 4.9mm thick (an ETA 2824-2 measures 4.6mm).

Despite the Grand Seiko being both manual wind and time only, the entire watch measures 0.5mm thicker than the JLC, which uses an automatic movement and adds both a moon phase and a complete calendar complication to the base.

·

I have to go with JLC myself.  The last watch I'll ever get will be a dress watch, and it's likely to come down to JLC, VC or ALS.

·

Great video - I enjoyed the integration of content from the site.  It seems more fun than video from others - just like this site!

·

The JLC is so fine makes me want to change jobs so I can work in a office and wear a fine suit as an excuse to go buy one! 🔥

·

Dial GS 10 JLC 9

History GS 9 JLC 10

Movement GS 10 JLC 8.5

Case GS 9 JLC 8

GS= 38 JLC=36.5

·

Watching those two running side by side illustrates how glorious the sweep of the second hand is on the GS and how clunky even a great movement like that of the JLC seems in comparison.
