CWoW Rolex Milgauss Ft. James May

A little late, but hopefully, not disappointing. The Rolex drought is over! I give you not just any old Rolex, I give you the watch of Captain Slow himself. Some say his skin has the texture of a dolphin’s, and that wherever you are in the world, if you turn your radio to 88.4, you can actually hear his thoughts. All we know is he’s called James May's.......and his Rolex Milgauss! It May be objectively cool, but does its owner make it woefully uncool or ice-cold? The choice is yours. Have at it, Crunchers!

I mean, he's not The Stig, but I'm pretty sure that Stiggy just intuitively knows the time down to the thousandth of a second at any given moment, which makes a watch superfluous for him.

God, I love that man.  All 3 of those clowns should be designated UNESCO World Treasures.

When they pass from this mortal coil, I hope we embalm them and have them displayed for all time in a BBC studio somewhere - like Mao in Tienanmen Square.

I was thinking these could serve as coffins......

I see the "writing" now, but I still enjoy it. Their trip the length of Vietnam may be one of the best bits of television ever made.

I vote a very tepid cool, because it is still a Rolex. But it is surely the black sheep of modern Rolex, and the lightning bolt second hand is something special.

Quite bluntly, this is a nerd watch. It was meant for hard science professional types back in the pocket protector and slide rule days. It engenders no Walter Mitty foolishness about diving, flying, yacht or auto racing, or the like.

It is the worst Rolex to get if trying to impress someone. Thus, it is pretty cool.

Make sure you designate May and Clarkson first so we can all enjoy one of RH’s hissy fits before he gets his.

Um, who? In any case, that is a seriously dull watch. Uncool.

·

While I prefer the blue, it is a cool watch. It is the oddball in the lineup and fits amazingly well on most wrists.

You have a point. If I could find the piece, I'd cite an old Jack Baruth article where he discusses authenticity. No, not provenance, personal authenticity. He says that when some British aristocrat bought a Range Rover, it was as a tool to get through muck and he had no thought of impressing anyone or projecting anything. Meanwhile when the modern day sheikh buys one to ferry Instagram hookers from the airport to his palace, it is all about projection and brand laurels and nothing about the actual product capability and function is of much importance. It is inauthentic. It is fake. The former is cool, the latter is not.

·

Cool, subzero even. Why you ask? Because it's a Rolex that never got to be bling. Also it's worn by May which gives it forgiveness for being a Rolex, @OscarKlosoff.

·

This or the explorer 1 39mm are realistically the only rolex I could see getting for myself.

·

James May is cool. The watch, not so much.

·

I’m all in on this one. I like these a lot.

·

A watch originally designed for scientists, and May is the geekiest of the trio so it fits. Its one of the few rolex's I would  actually buy if I had the funds, love the lightning second hand so for me it's cool.

·

The Milgauss is the only Rolex I would even consider owning.
