Unique Numerical Systems On Watch Dials

What cool numeric glyph systems would you like to see more often on watch dials? Images are of dials with Hebrew, Thai, Traditional Chinese, and Telugu numbers.

Some old lost numerals would be interesting as well. :)

Once in middle school wood shop we had to make a clock for a class project. I thought it would be pretty funny to have the numbers printed counterclockwise, but the hands run the normal clockwise rotation, just for laughs really, and my teacher just could NOT grasp the concept. He kept insisting that he cannot get a module to make the hands run backwards, and no matter how I tried to explain it he just wouldn’t have it. All wanted was a normal clock movement, on my goofy backwards dial.

I ended up just making a boring school colors and logo themed clock, and I just didn’t care. I made the worst out of round cut and and just slapped it together. Was totally deflated.

I ended up pulling the guts and hands from the clock and put them into a cymbal that I… acquiesced from the marching band dept. (they were retiring them that year and got new ones, it’s fiiiiiiiiine)

I should build one just to get the idea finally out of my head.

Not entirely related to this post, I just needed to vent I guess lol

This is a mockup of a watch currently in the works. Actually, I think it's supposed to be ready this month. I need to check on that. That's my name up top.

Amazing! A beautiful bespoke Billard piece! What was the process like?

I love these cool combos. I would be happy to buy a watch with more unusual design.

Here is my version of the Mayan Dial.

I've been eyeing Philippines based microbrand Deguzman & Co. for their babayin watches. Babayin was one of the pre-colonial writing systems in the Philippines.

Definitely would love to see more of these on watches.

Does this count? Markers are supposed to light up showing the hour. It's when it comes to minutes that it gets complicated.

How do you call yourself a Christian with a watch like this lol?

Well first of all, that's a gag gift for the White Elephant gift exchange when the (admittedly secular) rest of the family gets together this month for the holidays. It is not part of my collection. I put it on once and took a picture just for humor's sake here at WC and has been in storage since.

Second, I'm a Christian - not a saint - and we're allowed to have a sense of humor. But if you can find in the Bible where is says, "Thou shalt not post sex watches on watch community web sites" I'll happily include that sin among the many I have, as a heavily flawed person who continually seeks forgiveness. ✝

Churches would have tumbleweeds rolling through the aisles if only the perfect and virtuous attended.

I don't get number 7 🤔🫣

Edit... Please, I don't need an explanation either!

Well ya see son, when a mommy and a daddy love each other verrrry much….

Ok, that’s a fair enough reason to obtain it and whatnot, and yeah sure it could be funny and you’re allowed to get a laugh out of it. Also there’s not really anything inherently wrong with it, I mean in terms of going against the Bible per say… it’s more about the image that comes about.. people see “Christian” in your bio, then see this. Maybe they were in a position to come to Christ but then they see this. It just sends the wrong message and isn’t how the Christian body should portray itself.

If anything when they see that they'll think, "Oh, Christians aren't stuffy, judgemental people after all! Look, they have a sense of humor too!"

And despite your attempts to throw me under the bus about this, I forgive you, brother.

I’m not trying to throw you under the bus, but it’s come off as if I am, so I’m sorry, I was trying to help you see, but I came off as bratty and kinda snotty. I mean it really can go both ways but it’s still not something we, as Christians, should be putting out.

Oh, for those who like watch modding and are feeling FOMO when looking at @Pallet_Fork 's sexy time watch, fret no further. This just turned up in my Ali Express feed. Proof that our phones are listening...especially AE and the like.

The first one you show is Thai, Japanese brands often do it on some commemoration occasion, the only brand outside Japanese who also did Thai numerical is Oris.

Amazing! A beautiful bespoke Billard piece! What was the process like?

It was fairly easy and straightforward, though it took a while. I emailed with an initial idea based on examples on the website. Then there was a long email back with Armand Billard and forth going through multiple design iterations with multiple renderings, working out various details, etc. That took a while, in part because I let things drag out. He is generally very quick to respond. When everything was finalized, I put down a 50% deposit. Then in was just waiting. He said it would be ready towards the end of the year, so soon. All told I think it takes about six months. Ask me again when it's finally finished, shipped, and delivered. 😉

One subtle easter egg on the Horage Grand Feu Enamel dial tourbillon - the numbers are typical but the small indices beside the number are all small parts of the movement.
