The Longines Legend Diver 39mm drop is so close…

I can almost taste it.

Image

Nobody can deny that Longines has been on a roll. Just take a look at the new 39mm Spirit Zulu Time. Gorgeous. (Except that ridiculous male end link.)

Or the new Record. Nice.

Anyway, as some of you know, there was an event earlier this year where Longines  showcased a few of their new planned releases for 2023. Among them were the new 39mm Spirit Zulu Time and Legend Diver 39mm. Now that the new SZT released, it’s possible the LD could be right around the corner. Some images leaked online and it looks fantastic.

Some of the changes made:

Allegedly, people who were at the event were able to preorder them.

I personally love the new look. I always liked the LD but the sizes didn’t really work for me. This one will be right in the sweet spot. I like that they’ve removed the date, although I know most people prefer to have one. I think the new bracelet is a great inclusion, too.

I have yet to add a Longines to my collection, but this one could change that.

So what do you think? Do you like the new size and updates? Have you heard any rumors? Do you own one of the current Legend Divers? Are you happy with it? If you don’t own one, are you interested in this new one? Do you completely hate the new iteration and hope Longines goes bankrupt? Looking forward to reading your thoughts!

Wow I never thought I'd see the day lol. L2L would still be too long for me (6 inch wrists ), but great news that they're making the LLD more wearable for most people.

That’s a bummer. Would the 36mm not fit?

It definitely wears better but I prefer my sport watches to be around 38mm-39mm with a 45mm-46mm lug to lug. Maybe I'm asking for too much lol

Wow that bracelet is amazing! And finally some damn fitted endlinks!

I think Longines is making progress but they still have ground to cover. I quite like them. I really wanted to love the new Spirit. I did, I made a trip to a boutique hoping they would have one. They did, so I held the Spirit Zulu 39mm in my hand, had it on the wrist, bracelet and strap variant. The bracelet is still flimsy, no surprises there, and I could live with that if the watch wasn't so damn heavy. They are because they are way too thick, unnecessarily thick. That adds steel which makes them unnecessarily heavy. That's a problem in my opinion. A very serious one.

Here's my problem. The Omega 1128 is functionality equivalent to the movement inside this watch and based on a 2892, like the one in the Longines. The Omega movement is about 5.05mm high I believe. The SMP300 GMT had 300m WR in a case this big, Swatch seemed more competent 25y ago it seems. The Rolex 3185 is 6.45mm high, yet the GMT Master II is noticeably thinner than this Zulu Time. Beats me.

Let's hope that diver is better...

I think they are just releasing the watches that they should have made in the first place. Which is good but I struggle to praise them for it.

Sorry 😉🍻

38-39mm?! Sports?!

Lemme tell ya somethin’, son. Boys stormed the beaches of Normandy wearing watches roughly the size of a quarter! If 30mm is good enough for war, then I’ll be darned if it’s not good enough for whatever so-called sports you could use it for!

Kidding. I agree and don’t think you’re asking for too much. I prefer my watches (that aren’t dress) to be of a certain size. 38-40mm works best for me. I do have a 36mm I rock, though.

·

Finally, they are announcing the 39mm, I have been lookout since the leak came somewhere mid of last year. Need to take a look at the 39mm in person to see how it wears and the no date is welcome since the date placement with the L888 movement is awkward in the 42mm model.

And thank god for the lume improvements, it is mediocre in the current models. Fingers crossed for them to release a bronze version or more colours in the 39mm. The 42mm bronze model is absolutely beautiful.

Valid points! I do very much dislike an unnecessarily thick and heavy watch. It’s the main reason I didn’t jive with the Black Bay GMT. I guess the only way to know with the new LD is to go try one on.

Can’t argue with that. Most of their lineup never really appealed to me. Over the last few years, however, the sports models have blipped my radar.

Longines has been on a roll, primarily with re-issues from their bomb historic catalog.

·

Really exiting with a 39mm Legend Diver. I always felt between sizes.

·

Ooo I'm gonna be all over this one 😍. Love a nice beads of rice!

You and me both!

They definitely doing some nice salsa dancing lately there probably going to get my money soon enough.

·

My AD also leaked this info to me and I saw 2 variants in their catalogue: blue and red. Gone was the gradient dial, instead both had fully blue or red dials including the timing bezel. Each accompanied by a color-matched NATO strap.

I might very soon grow a desire to sell my 42 in favor of the 39!

Oh, that’s good to hear. Honestly wasn’t a real fan of the gradient dial.

Red, huh? Now that’s interesting! I’ve been wanting to add a red dial. I might be able to kill two birds here. Really excited to see this one release.

Take my money!!!!

Same here 6 inch wrist.

No date...fantastic!

I missed it when the first limited release came out with the no date. Then they moved to the date and the no date was impossible to get for a decent price. So I demurred.

Not so happy with the 39mm, as 42mm is my sweet spot, but understand why most others will be happy with it. It is the perfect size for most wrists.

Thanks for calling this out...will have to see if I pull the trigger this time around.

Love the design.

Yeah, no date FTW!

Maybe they’ll do an updated 42mm, too. I hope for you big banana handed fellas they do!

·

Love the no date decision..hallelujah… we all have phones for day and date anyways and the dial looks balanced .

I finally bit the bullet and paid the premium for an older 42mm no date version. That was Longines’ cue to release the 39mm no date version which I would would have preferred. It’s the story of my life.

·

Always loved the LD, unfortunately my puny wrists couldn't handle it.

Well, when you acquire the 39mm...drop me a note if your 42mm no date is in excellent condition including the strap...I could be interested.

·

Smaller case size means a big win for me and my fellow skinny-wristed guys

·

Why Longines and Hamilton keeps making "small" watches with long lug to lugs 47+ beats me. Defeats the purpose of the smaller diameter to begin with. I like the Hamilton intramatic chrono, 40mm, affordable, but 49l2l...nope. Same with these longines. They're always either too thick, too long L2L, or use a weird movement like a DD 2892 module, or ruin it with a glaring design fault (male end links, non tapering bracelets, terrible lume placement or no lume at all, etc)

·

I’m a sucker for super compressors (especially those old Benrus) and this one is excellent . It’s got the history and the design improvements with no date, the new beads of rice, and size - plus you can bang it around and swim with it since it’s a new watch. Looks great. I might have found the Longines I didn’t know I needed.

I’m also a sucker for super compressors (or styled). I agree with you on all accounts. Waiting for this thing to release already!

I also do prefer the no date aesthetics but having phones for day and date argument does not make much sense for me, since we all also have phones for time but we still like to wear watches.
