Definitely some valid points! The 40mm in full gold tone might indeed be a bit too loud. The bracelet is definitely one of the eyecatchers of the watch.
Buying two of them and matching watches with your son seems like a fun thing to do!
A G-Shock is also a nice contender. I would stick with the classic square- shaped DW 5600, as I find others too bulky for daily wear.
Can't go wrong with the Casio AE-1200WHD-1AVEF. I have the steel version as well as the one on the resin band. If it is the only watch your son will wear (at least in the beginning😉), I would go for the silver/ steel version. This was my first "proper" watch that I bought for myself as well (I was also around the age of 16/ 17) and I still wear it to this day with as much joy as the first time it was around my wrist.
It resembles also the Seiko watch James Bond wore in Octopussy.
