How chronographs are enough?

Maybe I'm an oddball. It seems Divers are overwhelming gateway drug into the watch world. But mine has always been chronographs.

Image

From the two that got my out of fashion watches into watch that could actually last a deployment. Chronos can be rugged.

Image

They can be fun and gawdy.

Image

Or classy and purposeful. Chronograph are , to me, the most diverse segment of watches.

Even though I achieved my grail, I really don't think this will be an end. This is because of a chronographs diversity. A chronograph can be a dress watch, a diver, sailing watch, pilot instrument, a racer, or a pulsometer. Not only can it be mechanical, auto, quartz or hybrid but the function can be the true test of the movement. Lastly, it's the learning. Using time to determine speed, acceleration, pulse, even direction. I put a quota for divers and GMTs in my collection. But I just don't see one for chronographs. I won't happen. There are my drug of choice.

I agree 100%. I'm gonna say something controversial... only with chronographs can you actually feel the upgrade between Quartz vs Mechanical. Is my quartz diver better than their German or Swiss rivals for more than double the price? not really in my opinion. How about a Quartz Chrono vs a Mechanical? Even a Sea-Gull feels much different. The Bulova Lunar Pilot is probably the only Chronograph that I was shocked how close it comes to a mechanical movement and quality.

I used to absolutely love chrono’s when I was younger.

What changed is my eyes unfortunately! When a dial is busy it’s too jarring for my eyes.

I hate that because I still love the look of chrono’s but anytime I’ve gotten them recently I’ve had to sell on..

Oh well.

I waiting for Bulova to have a Precisionist chronograph. It would be even cooler if the put that movement in their Surfboard.

The chronograph is definitely my favourite complication but divers will I think still win out for me but it is getting close and I’ve got a decent amount of chronographs now.

Correct, I don't know why I separated the Mint Chocolate chip and called yours the Chocolate chip😅

They’re both fantastic and to be honest it was a toss up between the two. I can definitely recommend Studio Underdog if you like chronographs though.

Unfortunately, they sell out fast.

They do have a few models (some are just weird looking) with their 262kHz movement:

🤢, not those. I was thinking of a chrono versions of the Jet Star or the Precisionst 96b158

I'm with OP on this. Divers generally don't do it for me, Vostok have designs that interest me more than the standard divers so I'm already more than covered with half a dozen.

Chronos - I'm up to a dozen and a half, with another 6 on my wishlist. Even if my eyesight goes I'll still enjoy the aesthetic of the subdials whether they're used or not.

Does it count as a chronograph?

I think is the only one I have 😅

Absolutely. Correct me if I'm wrong wrong but I think the timing measures even decimals of a second.

Very nice 👍

Great collection. As a collector, I think once something resonates with you, try as you might, you will always be on the hunt. My drug of choice is NBT ("Nothing But Timex").

·

Definitely on I hope to get in 2024. Most likely the Aragon Matador Rhonda 8040n

Although I really want an automatic.

I'm new to collecting but chronographs are my current favorite just something about the multiple dials and so much going on the face just gives the watch character and as you mentioned can be used in any situation so thats one reason why I gravitate towards them

·

Not sure I would agree with this assessment, but that’s what’s great about this hobby, the varied taste amongst collectors.

·

Seems like I look more and more into Chronographs. I used to like simple 3 handers. I still do but now I appreciate a more busy dial as well.

·

Used to like them but apart from rarely using the complication, my eyes don’t like to look at chromosome as I get older and I find liking clean simple dials.

·

I also love Chrono watches, and today I am wearing one of my 11 Chronographs

Image
·

Agreed. Just realized this weekend that the vast majority of the watches I find myself interested in are chronos.

Speedmaster

Navitimer

Zenith Chronomaster

Longines BigEye

Hanhart 417 ES

Etc….

This. I was in Roppongi in the early 2000s and on the corner there was a werewolf closed watch store with some on display. One of them was a Mille Miglia. I didn't necessarily desire the Chopard as match as the style. This is the watch that made me want a racing chrono.

·

Love chronographs! The only mechanical chronograph Iowan at this moment is the Seagull 1963. Ithink about a chrono for my next purchase, the Zenith Al Primero revival

I’m new to this watch hobby, but I already am intrigued by chronographs! I have one on the way and am looking at 2 more for purchase next year! I think they are very unique and interesting, and I don’t see many people wearing them!
