Opinion on yellow gold

Ladies and gentlemen of WatchCrunch, what is your opinion on yellow gold?

Here are some opinions from a similar topic on the Reddit Rolex forum:

“Wearing a gold watch everyday makes you look like a dick”

“Gold is a crass and ostentatious taste”

“Almost always in poor taste”

“Stainless is more affordable”

“I’m too pale for gold”

No fence sitting. You must choose a side!

I think it’s clear where I stand on the topic.

I think age plays a big factor in this preference; imo the appreciation for yellow gold (and other precious metal) watches increases as one ages.

·

I'll say the same thing I, a person who cannot afford a solid gold watch, always say; it's crass & just for flex. Gold is merely an accent color for those of refined taste & sensibility.

·

I don’t generally like it on me, or as a feature of my home’s decor. I don’t have any problem with it on others, and don’t associate it with any of the negative statements made by those particular Redditors.

One of the dumbest things I've ever heard someone say is "gold is out of style." Gold might not look good on certain watches but gold is never ever out of style.

One thing that perplexes me is the same people who say gold watches are overpriced will gladly pay $11,000 for a stainless steel tool watch from a certain company that starts with “R”.There are many vintage solid gold pieces that can be had for melt value. A much better bargain in my opinion. Truly “worth its weight in gold”.

I don't usually like yellow gold, but I won't hold it against anyone else.

·

I love it on the correct watch. Here is mine.

There are some inexpensive two tone options out there! Check out some 90s and 2000s examples from Grand Seiko. Under $800

I usually prefer rose gold, but yellow works for me sometimes.

·

Some people realize they don't deserve gold, so they get all sour grapes about it. I used to be unworthy too.

·

I guess I’m a *ick, crass, ostentatious and have poor taste.

I feel like I’m too young to wear solid gold, and that all gold is something I should look forward to down the road. I do dabble in two tone watches with solid gold bezels, and accents. Even then I feel too posh 🧐

I doo love gold, though. And at the end of the day, I say yes!

The more time I spend discussing anything with Reddit people, the more I realise they hate everything about everything.

If you like the look of yellow gold, do you thing.

·

I used to be narrow minded on gold and would have echoed the Reddit sentiments but now I’m all for it, happy when people wear what they like, and also appreciate that it goes really well with certain skin tones

·

I wear either stainless steel/silver or yellow gold jewelry and I match the watch to my necklaces and rings for example. Yellow gold is great in my book. 👍🏼

·

Prefer Rose Gold as a rule, but done right yellow gold can be stellar.

·

A solid gold watch, you are basically getting a free watch as the gold pays for itself in weight

·

I think it depends on the person wearing it. If they are showing off, and they’re wearing gold, it will probably be flashy and they will look like a douche. If they’re dressing up with a gold watch and want to look elegant, it will likely be something classy. I saw a guy wearing a simple gold Datejust with plain clothes at an indoor play area for toddlers. He looked comfortable and well put together, but didn’t look douchey at all.

But the Rolex president will have a presidential bracelet! Not a jubilee.

Thanks. Didn’t even know there was a Presidential bracelet. I’ve seen it before I guess, my least favorite, so even more so I’d not like it. But still way out of my price range.

Errbody be throwing around them Uber hi-bill ideas....

For a certain mood, aesthetic, or style, a gold Armitron Griffy ties the ensemble together, YMMV.

And yes, this is a style I have worn and do wear, in public, regularly. Best way to hide in plain sight TBH. No baddies ever expect opposition to be coming from me. 😂

Like all things depends on the watch and the wearer (you have to have the confidence to wear it)

There are some watches that need to be in all yellow gold…like the 222 or the Day Date on a presidential band…2 tone or steel look off.

There are some, like the sub (imo) that look horrible in gold.

While the Speedy looks good in both all gold and steel but no on 2 tone.

(Gold being yellow or rose - white is just too stealthy)

In my opinion, it is impossible to pick a side on this issue. I chose "hate" but in reality there is more to it than just throwing it in one pile. First of all, the reason why I don't like gold is because I hate cheap replicas of gold-plated watches. They look very cheap and totally without the charm of prestige. Which actually contradicts what gold represents. On the other hand, even if I could afford to buy a gold watch, it would only be in a two-tone version if we are talking about yellow gold. If it's white, it's something else in my opinion. I like them and would have no problem owning a white gold watch without another color combination. Rose gold seems to me more suitable for gentler halves, I don't know why, but that's how I see it 🤷‍♂

Yes I don’t do gold plated or especially “gold tone”. It’s very cheap looking and instantly recognizable.

Interestingly, many jewelry makers today will dip or plate their 14k solid gold pieces in 22k gold. My 14k Miami cuban link bracelet has a much richer gold tone than what I would expect from 14k.

The recent surge in popularity of the 222 and PRX surprises me. I actually quite like the 222 in two tone. The day date simply must be in yellow gold. The platinum version is a different animal. Also the 36mm day date is as big as I would personally go with a gold watch.

I love the shirt. Oddly enough I rewatched Scarface last night for it’s excellent 80’s aesthetic.

Yellow gold looks best 36 and below for most watches. Especially chunky ones like the Day/Date.

222 at 37 though is my perfection.

I love yellow gold, I wish I had a bunch of it!😀

For those who don't care for it. please send me yours!

This poll specified 'yellow' gold. I don't hate gold, but I least prefer yellow gold. Seems it's flashiest.

Now, red gold? YES, love that!

·

I’ve always like the idea of wearing a yellow gold watch. My skintone just doesn’t allow it. Tried rose gold as well, but still a miss.

I am envious of those that can pull off wearing yellow gold.

·

I'm getting old, and you can tell by the way I start to warm up to solid gold watches. Other than dress watches that is.

·

I do have a two tone yellow gold watch now. I never was interested in one until I found a design who talk to me. Sur it isn't alot of gold an melting it wouldn't cover the price of the watch at all. But gold was always a precious metal and a symbol in every human culture since down of time. I had a small revelation thought whe I bought it of yes I own a bit of gold that I wear. Now I don't think about it much it simply look nice. Wich is the main point of wearing a watch aside telling time.

I would fancy a vintage full gold watch someday. There is some pretty interesting design on decent price point. And they are definitely not as blingy as a modern one on a full gold bracelet. A dark leather strap tone down the gold effect a lot.
