Have you ever assembled or cased a watch?

I was wondering how many of use have dabbled in “making” a watch. Not looking at servicing/repair and I know there ate not enough option to account for being a watchmaker. Modding could be anything from engraving to changing parts like the crystal or bezel.

Option C for me. Wanted to try out building my own watch following my own design. Built four so far. Sold everything, including spare parts and and kept one watch. Too much of a hassle for me to continue. Might pick it up later.

I've fixed a clock, but the works in a watch are just too small for me to want to mess with. Zero desire to start modding or do a build kit

·

I took a class and disassembled and reassembled a watch just to learn. I have no interest in modding watches. I'm not a designer or watchmaker and I don't pretend to be. I let the experts handle that.

·

Sure have. It is a project for sure but I suppose being able to bring an idea to life was worth it. Starting with a simple project I think may be an easier way to decide for yourself whether or not you enjoy modding as a hobby. #modding

No interest in doing owt like that myself, I'm realistic and realise my limitations, but my Mrs is getting into it. 😉👍

Good for her!

I want to make one, just haven't gotten around to ordering a kit.

I did have a take apart and build it back toy pedelum clock when I was a kid. It got lost during a move. I would love to have it back.

·

I have not but I want to. I have looked at the DIY watch kits and I might eventually get one. I'm guessing setting the hands correctly will be the hardest part. I enjoy working on and building things. If that goes well I might look at sourcing parts and build a one of a kind watch.

·

The learning curve is steep and you will destroy some parts but in the end you can build one far cheaper than retail. GMT's for under 100 and 3 handers for under 70.

·

Ive made a few now and really enjoy it. Cases and dials I get from AliExpress and then put a Sellita movement in. I'm at the point where I'd like to start printing my own dials which is harder than I thought! I've started to take the movements apart too, for example trying to remove the date complication. The 2 below are probably my favourites and the ones I now wear most of the time

I wanted to work on patience and fine motor skills, this challenges both. I still struggle with setting the seconds hand, I've lost a bunch of screws by squeezing tweezers too hard, and I curse under my breath almost every step of the way. It's still a fun way to appreciate watches.

I have looked in AliExpress at parts and fantasied about still have to pull the trigger on that project

·

I have done work on bracelets that involved doing things that aren't meant to be done, like filing down links to fit things in a way and with parts that aren't meant to go together. Never anything with movements or cases though.

Best of luck when you do.

Want to. Just haven't done it yet.

I have just purchased parts for 4 different watch designs I've been working on. Got one of them sold already, hoping to sell more for Xmas to friends and family to potentially turn my hobby in a bit of a money maker. I enjoy assembling watches...

Will post photos when I build 'em and might do a video or two unboxing and assembly... could be fun.

I’ve done a few of option c

It wasn’t too bad but I found the hands to be a nightmare especially the second hand

I made a couple of the explorer style watches with different colour dials had trouble with the second hands on all of those the paneri ones were easier to build due to the larger size

Gave up building them after throwing a fleger in the bin after I damaged the movement putting on the hands 🤬 the others I’ve given away to friends and family and while frustrating they were very satisfying to give away

Thanks I got there in the end 😊

·

I really want to try my hand at building one. If only for the xp so I can fix watches in my current collection down the line when I have issues. I have some parts on a list I plan on buying and doing some research on walkthroughs in the coming months.

·

Tdanks for the lead but no, that isn't it. The one I had was round and what is now called a skeleton. You could see all the gears moving. It was loud as all get out as I recall.

·

All of the above. Working on a movement can be very therapeutic also, as you have to focus to a degree that blocks out the outside world, at least if all goes well. If it doesn't, it can lead to uncontrollable fits of rage.
