Sometimes the watch is just wholly inappropriate 😎

But who cares?

Well, maybe you do! Any circumstances where you really wouldn’t wear a particular watch?

I’ve always viewed a watch as an expression of myself. As a guy, I don’t wear any other jewelry other than a gold wedding ring on my left hand that my wife placed there 18 years ago with the understanding that’s its removal would lead to my demise and not wanting to test my sweet wife’s resolve, I choose to keep it where it is. But in all seriousness, watches provide us the opportunity to express ourselves for who we are without concern for appropriateness. At least in my humble opinion.

A watch no, the strap yes. Leather strap whilst working up a sweat, will become quite unpleasant given time 😬.

·

There is only one occasion in my world where I would only wear something really demure, tailored and subdued in colour………..a funeral.

My funeral watch:

Very formal

Otherwise I wear any style of watch for any occasion👍🏻

·

I wouldn’t wear a G-Shock to a formal event and I wouldn’t wear a dress watch while doing sports activities. Everything else is pretty much fair game for either and anything in between.

·

Hmmm....are pediatricians allowed to wear watches while assisting someone to give birth?

I once wore my vintage Seamaster while doing yardwork and put a horrific scratch on the otherwise pristine original crystal.....that one stung and changed some of my wearing habits......

·

Before I got the watch bug, I wore the same watch everyday for 20 years. It was a Citizen Ecodrive dress watch, but I wore it whether I was at work, on the weekends and everything else. I never looked at a watch as an accessory and just what I wore for the time. Now that I'm a bit older I feel the same with the exception when I wear a suit for a wedding or something like that, I make sure I'm wearing a dress watch, but that's it. Watches are not a fashion accessory to me because I'm very non-fashionable and I see them as so much more than that. I love them as an artistic collectible that I love to wear and look at and yes, even tell the time.

Internationally.

I'm going to India this summer, and I'm mostly going to be staying at an ashram (spiritual center). Our flat rents at $1.25/day

Our particular type of obsession with material possessions would not be appreciated there. A fancy watch probably wouldn't get stolen, but it very possibly engender some judgment from locals and Westerners alike. Spiritual aspirants can throw fantastic amounts of shade.

I'm looking into picking up a casio royale world time, and maybe one of those quirky armitron ana/digi dual times. Then I'll probably just give them away before I leave.

speaking of which, I'll probably create a thread closer to my departure, but if anyone has ideas for cheap dual time watches, I'm all ears. I don't want a standard GMT or World time becuase India is a +:30 so it defies the normal world time dial.

·

I think some vintage watches probably require more care just due to age and overall build quality. And modern watch, whether dress watch or G-Shock can realistically be used for any activity at all, as built quality has improved significantly.

·

I wear whatever takes my fancy. True, if I'm likely to get wet or seriously sweaty, then a leather strap is a bit of a no-no, but otherwise, anything goes.👍

·

Anything very expensive when the kids are around. They have a habit of destroying things

“Spiritual aspirants can throw fantastic amounts of shade.” Nicely put 🙃

True ofc, but I trust my 90-year old watch to handle a bike ride 😎

·

Exactly throw that bike away and immediately get into an Aston Martin. You’re welcome 😂😂😂😂

I’ve worn my reverso riding my

Bianchi. Whatever you think

·

Good to hear from you brother!!! My kids often pick what I wear, so I have been known to have a duck on my wrist during an “important meeting” or a “clicky bezel” for a tea party.

·

I wouldn't wear a Gshock to a wedding.

·

When I was a Boy Scout leader, one of the other adult leaders used to wear his gold Rolex Day-Date on our camping trips. I wore a G-shock or Timex Expedition. Never understood why he wanted to risk it. We were in the sand, water, mud, etc.

·

I have a strict policy of only wearing whatever the hell I want whenever I like.

Nothing to add, just slow clapping…

·

For me wearing any mechanical watch while riding a bike is a big no no. I feel like the amount of vibration transmitted to the movement and the delicate balance wheel is just damaging. Apparently it’s not, but I’m just not willing to risk it.

Wear something excited and think of it as a chance for them to grow past that prejudice. :-)

·

I don't dress up enough to save a watch for dress up days. I wear whatever strikes my fancy.

Usually I wear my Seiko Turtle. If a Prospex can’t handle a bicycle ride, whsts the point?

I'm polarizing enough with bare wrists.

On the other hand That can have social drawbacks as well….

·

I’m not sure if I own anything that qualifies as a dress watch. I think these two are about as close as it gets.

well, that's what I have a Garmin watch for. I don't have a dedicated beater mechanical watch. I might just be too cautious about them, but a bike ride (no dampers) seem like harsh treatment that can be easily avoided

Well if I’m really serious about that I have My Rick and Morty G-Shock. Or just my Apple Watch Ultra by itself.

I would not wear my vintage watches on rainy days.
