Blancpain Milspec

Love the size and look of this. 40mm case, 46mm lug to lug, but that price, 23,000€ 😬. I struggle to understand the value here, compared to a Seamaster PO or 300, or a Submariner. No applied markers. Movement doesn't hack. Textile strap..

it's all perceived brand value real or imagined. hugely overpriced for what you get.... no precious metals or diamonds to add real value

·

ImHo … once you pass about 4~6 thousand $/€ price point, the cost stops becoming a sum of it’s parts. Good or bad, it simply becomes what people are willing to pay for it based on a myriad of reasons. ✌️

·

Looks like a Mil Ships to me 😁

·

Blancpain really think they’re special huh.

·

Heritage when compared to those brands. The first dive watch ever was a Blancpain.

·

One of life's great mysteries - they've always been too big, too clunky and just not exciting enough. It's about the only dive watch I want, but the pricing is absurd.

·

“Value” when discussing jewelry, er, sorry, luxury watches 😂🤣😂

·

I will be the contrarian and say I love mine regardless of the price (though I paid significantly less than the 23k euro price quoted).

I also ditched the NATO strap for the orange tropic rubber similar to one I saw Jae @JaeBust wearing.

The movement here is superior to anything from Rolex and the price I paid was about equivalent with a Sub. So a much better watch for about the same price.

Thank you, Mel @ChronoGuy, for the mention. I 100% agree with your opinion.

If supply from the manufacturer and access to an AD weren’t an issue for me, I would already own one at MSRP. The secondary prices of these limited editions has been prohibitive.

Having said that, Blancpain has jumped the shark with its newest release (that I would like to buy one day) priced at nearly three times the value of a Sub. No thanks. I’ll be happier with a Sub and a Polaris for the same money.

Looks good. The 23k is the chrono24 price. I'm considering trading 4 nice watches in for one epic watch.

I hear you on the ability to get one at MSRP. I actually was fortunate to pick mine up from HODINKEE when they were having a blowout sale. I knew they had one and was able to pick it up for only $17k USD - a slight premium over MSRP.

I guess I decided to ride the shark on the more recently released Act 3...I did purchase that at MSRP...but it was quite the high MSRP...

Love this look which is why I went for this Swatch version

Image
·

I like Blancpain - I think the FF is no longer what it’s meant to be but as a remnant, and icon, it has nothing left to prove.

If you don’t want to pay it… Tandorio, or Swatch.

·

To be fair Blancpain sold these for $15.5k (not saying that is cheap)…the secondary market has pushed them to $25k. The market is where the market is.

·

And also I do have these, so may my opinion doesn’t count.

Blancpain making the first dive watch is definitely a cool and impressive bit of brand history, but how much should a long-past achievement be used to justify such a massive price premium (we could say the same for the moon-landing tax that Swatch puts on every Omega Speedmaster sold as well...)

·

I would say you pay a bit for haute horlogerie🧐, a bigger part for the heritage of the brand and Fifty Fathoms model 🤿 and a looot for their profit margins 💸💸💸

·

I really don’t know the correct answer to this one. It’s obviously built to exacting specifications and does have a in house movement. But there are plenty of options that are as good or even better for less money. It may be the design. Bezel was unique when released. Not sure who the client is at this point. Hope this makes sense.

·

All you need to do is flip the watch over. Its far from Rolex's conveyor assembly. This are high horology timepieces made in limited numbers assembled by hand. Value in watches is a made up perceived notion. Every person has a different understanding of what that is. Look at one and you'll understand.

Exactly right. The Daytona is not worth near 30k either.

·

Hype and self imposed limits in the production. Blancpain is doing what some people are accusing Rolex of doing.

You can have a Blancpain with the same movement for A LOT cheaper. It has nothing to do with the watch as such and everything with the fifty fathoms branding and its status as an "icon" in that form factor and execution. It's a nice watch but I wouldn't pay 10,000 more than for a concept 2000, which is basically the same watch...

·

For all those on the bandwagon of the fifty fathoms as the first dive watch I’d recommend this:

https://perezcope.com/2023/09/09/debunking-the-fictitious-history-of-the-blancpain-fifty-fathoms/

Now, that being said, I own a titanium 5150 and love it. I bought it new with a 25% discount from an AD. IMHO this watch blows a sub away. The movement is far superior, and the aesthetic is vintage dive watch enough for me but not over the edge. The fully loomed bezel, the beautiful blue dial, the Arabic’s, if you want a piece of diving history, chase this not a sub.

·

The Perezcope article is great, he is a wonderful watch journalist, just what the industry needs.

All that taken aside, what a cracking watch the Fifty is, looks great in blue!

·

Value? 🤣 (I still love it though)

·

Love the blancpain dive watches, yeah they are pricey but they offer a different watch to the Rolex’s. The Sub is also a daily wear where as from what I can see this has a different clientele.
