Watches in the Wild (Meetings, Volume 49)

Disclaimer: Roooooadster.

This is the forty ninth in a semi-regular digest of cool watches I happened to see this week.

Past posts in this series have been hashtagged to #watchesinthewild.

As always, my general policy is that I never ask for wrist shots (because approaching strangers and distant acquaintances to talk about watches is already weird enough) so all pictures below are sourced from the internet. People are mostly cool, I try not to annoy them.

----

Just a quick upfront this time.

Fall means business travel for me and so much of this missive has been written in airport lounges or during harried uber rides from meeting to meeting.  It's a life and a good one and, by way of minor benefit, I get to see a lot of watches on wrists in environment that my day to day would not allow for.

A good selection today and some griping about Rolex. I hope you enjoy!

----

First some Rolex respots that I have beaten to death in past editions already

So many steel Explorers, Datejusts and Submariners

If anyone needed any evidence of the ubiquity of these watches....

GS SBGW289

Image

On the wrist of a watch collecting friend.  We didn't talk about this watch per se, though I did confirm the model.  He was on his way to picking up his Rolex Explorer from the engraver which is very cute and also the sort of thing that only a psychopath does because it absolutely kills resale value.  Think of the residuals man!

I kid because I love because this sort of thing is getting more rare in an era of increased financialization of our timepieces.  More attention is paid to retaining value than making memories and it's just such a damned shame.

This friend has an absolutely killer collection. In addition to the Explorer, two Tudors, an Omega, a Nomos, a Halios, and an Oak and Oscar.  And this gorgeous Grand Seiko in breathtaking pale pink.

These are the sorts of Grand Seiko dials that I think are destined to be true future classics: subtle, beautiful, and refined.

In contrast to the over saturated pictures on the GS website, the pink in the metal is quieter, almost imperceptible.  In certain lights, it comes off as almost cream colored and just looks the pure business overall.  For those of you who like minimalist dials, this is sure to appeal.  Being a maximalist myself, I would honestly like a power reserve!

But this to me is peak Grand Seiko.  Beautifully finished, beautifully sized (36.5mm!) with a dial that is textured enough to be interesting but not so much that it runs the risk of falling out of fashion.

Rose Gold Daytona on Oysterflex (116515LN)

Image

Seen at an outdoor restaurant on the wrist of a startup guy really trying to raise an angel round from a wealthy investor.  Having been there before (where I'm really jonesing to raise capital from an investor), it would have been very bad form to interrupt.  I hope it went well, though I might have chosen a different watch.

There's not much to say here.  I like Daytonas, I don't mind the bling, and I rather like the oysterflex.  But it brings to mind an interesting question that I occasionally see asked on WatchCrunch....how do I choose what watch to wear in a business setting?

In many respects, this is a silly question. No one cares what watch you're wearing.  But sometimes they do and I wonder at my own strong reaction to wearing a rose gold Daytona to a pitch meeting.

Perhaps this is my middle class roots showing but I often find that I am trying to draw less attention to my wrist when in a business setting.  "Fitting in" is the watch word of the day and I often dress to my audience.  A subdued steel dress or dressy sport watch tends to be my choice when meeting with institutional investors (often people investing in behalf of nonprofits or educational institutions).  There's just no percentage in looking like you're getting rich of fees.

With my Hong Kong high net worth investors, I tend to wear gold or two tone. This is fitting in of a different sort, because most of the time, they're wearing something that would make an oil sheikh blush (like a datograph or a patek perpetual calendar).

When meeting with management teams or out in the field doing research, I wear Seiko. I find that it is nice being able to slip under the radar while traveling and talking with people.

And in the office?  Whatever strikes my fancy that day.  After all, who are we doing this for really?

As for our erstwhile startup guy, I might have gone for something a touch lower key.  San Francisco is an Apple watch city and I find angel investors tend to want you to be monomaniacally focused on building a business and making them money.  A gold Daytona isn't quite that.

But what do I know anyway?

Rolex Datejust 126333 (two tone Wimbledon dial)

Image

Seen on the wrist of a friendly acquaintance, one of his favorite watches.  I roasted it in the way that I do so with friends, because this is my least favorite iteration of Rolex two tone save for perhaps the Yachtmaster 2 which thankfully has been sent to a watery grave. Some say that the dial is supposed to be evocative of the clocks that Rolex put at the All England Club for timing The Championships.  For the record, these are some of the clocks used at Wimbledon over the years

Image
Image

I mean, it's a dead ringer.....for a regular datejust.

But the worst offense isn't even the pointless mythologizing around the provenance of the dial design.  It's so much worse than that. The faint of heart should look away because this triggers me even thinking about it.

For context, this is normal datejust lume.

Image

This is one of the rare Arabic dials. Just lovely.

Image

And here is the Wimbledon dial.

Image

You will find corners of the internet defending this aesthetic choice as "balancing" the date window.  You must reject this hogwash for the Stockholm Syndrome backwards justification that it is because you can and should be treated better than this.

Even by friggin Rolex.

Seiko Tank Gold

Image

Seen on the wrist of the a lady at the airport.  No conversation.

Covered extensively before (and I won't subject you all to my preaching on how obsession with originality is a blight on the watch hobby or how I believe homages don't detract from but bolster the glamour of the original) but I want you all to know that I do very much so like this watch.

Orient Kamasu Teal

Image

Seen on the wrist of a dad exiting my kid's school.  Complimented it but I don't think he heard me.

This is the first Orient diver I've seen in some months and I do love that it is this endlessly classic version of Orient's best entry level diver.

For what it is worth, I don't think you can literally do better in mechanical watch land for $200 and yes, I'm including AliExpress in that assessment.  The design is original, the dial layout is attractive, and the hands are actually just fabulous with a hint of anchor.  This watch is up there with the Seiko 5 as my very favorite first watch for anyone whose wrist can deal with it.

And the teal version?  Chef's kiss

I didn't come across the rich tradition of Orient dive watches until quite a bit later in my watch collecting years and as such I never have spent much time owning or fiddling with these watches.

But the last time I got one on wrist, it felt well proportioned and sm as truly designed.  Definitely some budget compromises like folded end links and push pins but nothing that felt out of place or poorly conceived.

I have a notion to pick one of these up used for a modding project.

Laco Flieger Clean Dial

Image

Seen on the wrist of a tech CEO I had a meeting with.  I asked him which of the Flieger brands this was and he replied with the Laco.  We chatted watches for a bit and as it happens he's a budget watch nut (despite having a net worth many many times mine) with a collection in the dozens.  He humorously noted that most of his acquaintances don't really understand his collecting habits.  I feel you man.

It feels like a personal oversight that I have never owned a flieger before.  I couldn't really tell you why not.  I enjoy the classic flieger hands, I do like a highly legible dial.  There's just a lot to like.  I even circle around the Mark XVIII/XX consistently and wonder what it might take for me to pull the trigger.

I suspect it has a lot to do with the fact that the flieger is so archetypal that I get serious decision paralysis whenever I see one.  It's not that I can't feel the differences in quality when I grab a high end one versus a mid tier one.  I can and there are justifiable reasons for the price differences.

But watches are as much visual as they are tactile and there's no denying that at first glance, all fliegers look pretty similar.  Laco even contributes to this problem with nearly identical watches with different movements at different prices.  It's all very vexing.

All of this is to say it's a great watch.  I just wish I wasn't quite so shallow.

What cool watches did you see this week?

Wowzwer I really like that Cartier! Very nice!

Thanks! Discontinued in 2012, one of those somewhat rare sporty Cartiers.

Currently the oldest continuously owned watch in my collection!

·

Great write up as always. And as always I haven’t spotted anything outside my own wrist.

·

As I live out in the hinterlands these days, I can't really contribute much to any watch-spotting.

But I just wanted to say how much I enjoy your weekly roundups. In fact, I only found WatchCrunch because I came across one of your posts while googling something watch-related.

And for the record, I agree with you about the Wimbledon. It's probably the ugliest non-jeweled DateJust that Rolex has ever released.

Awwwww, get to an airport early and just people watch! I find it's incredibly efficient watch spotting as these things go. Lots of Rolexes and G-shocks but occasionally you come across a watch where you stop and turn.

Well that just makes me feel all fuzzy inside. Thanks for reading and welcome to my silly little corner of WatchCrunch. I feel as though I am on a quixotic quest to chronicle every watch I see and perhaps also convince my fellow nerds to try to talk to people in the wide open world about the cool watches on their wrists.

The Wimbledon hurts my soul because it's such a form over function watch and Rolex, for all its many faults, tends to actually make watches that do work as intended. The single lumed index at nine makes the watch unfathomably worse than literally no lume at all. It baffles me that this is such a beloved watch by enthusiasts.

Aside from Apple Watches, I saw a guy at the grocery store wearing a Casio A158 like this one...

Image
·

You like the GS SBGW289? My wife has one that she doesn't wear, because she's come to prefer the fake Santos I bought! And I can't wear it, because I refuse to wear anything less than 43mm. You wanna borrow it?

Recently saw...

  1. Carier Tank with pink dial on a woman's wrist on my SW flight. All Cartiers look incredible on women's wrists. Effortlessly elegant.

  2. Gold Casio on the wrist of some dude running by me on the sidewalk - looked like a million bucks. I don't think I'd be more excited if I'd seen a Patek on his wrist. Having the gold Casio absolutely marks him as a watch nerd.

  3. Saw a Marlin on the wrist of a dude on a SW flight. I was proud of myself for having spotted it 10 feet away and knowing what it was without even seeing the Marlin itself on the dial.

  4. Swiss Army Wenger on the wrist of a dude waiting for an UBER. This was one of my go-to watches, always bought at Costco, 20 years ago. Wish I still had one!

Funny story, I bought one of these for my nephew a couple months ago as a present for making the honor roll at middle school.

When I tried it on, I realized just how crazy it looked on me because it just doesn't look right on my 7.5 in wrists (versus his skinny pre teen wrists). I feel like Casio is just one of those big holes in my watch collecting knowledge/ownership that I should address some day.

Cool spot!

Sure! I know it will look absolutely insane on my wrist though! I feel like 37mm is the lower end of reasonable on my wrist these days.

Some excellent spots across the price spectrum for you!

BTW I have a watch story from the San Diego airport for you next week!

Awesome. I'll bring it with me the week of 10/23 - 10/27, if you're available to meet up that week!

I wish I knew more about Armitron, the brand and the watches. I feel like I see the brand on such a wide variety of watch form factors that I frankly don't have a good handle on what it is.

Still excellent spot and ID!

Laco… wow, super find IRL. Never seen on anyone else but my love for Laco is like my love for Stowa.

My random story:

Guy in elevator wearing a Wimbledon DJ: …

Me: can’t miss a Wimbledon

Guy: uh, I don’t watch tennis

Me: oh, no I mean your watch

Guy: it’s a Rolex

Older guy behind me 2 floors later: ha, ‘Rolex owners’ right?!

Me: yeah, most of them

OG: that’s why I stick with the “side piece”. Never gets the attention, but always delivers.

OG was wearing a TAG Aquaracer GMT

Image

Looked older and well loved and I don’t have a bad thought or word about it. Best 30 second elevator watch conco I’ve ever had.

·
Edge168n

Sometimes it's just luck of the draw but airports are my watch spotting jam! Tons of people wandering around and no one really cares if you stare.

Yeah I think it was just the crowd. Most people on Kauai were wearing Apple, GShock, or Garmins. Might be different if I flew from NY, LA, London, Singapore, Hong Kong, Miami, or any other trendy place.

·
AllTheWatches

In the last week I’ve been to two separate watch events. All the usual suspects and few standouts in the sea of Swiss luxury and a single ALS1 (which I am oddly seeing a more of as it seems to be the new non Rolex/AP status piece). However, the one standout, the watch that got away (for me), a Vacheron Overseas Dual Time. I want a last gen white dial, but it is spectacular in person regardless of color or gen.

Image

Those are some crazy spots. I've never seen a Lange 1 in the metal (which feels like an oversight for me) but I'm sure it is magical.

That VC Overseas dual timer would be my choice of the big three integrated bracelet watches as well. They're honestly not ridiculously hard to source in mint condition at roughly retail prices.

I go hot and cold on the Overseas collection in general. I think it is unequivocally the most attractive of the big three sports watches but they wear so large and I find that the Parmigiani Tondas tend to fit my wrist better.

And then I wonder if I should just buy a pair of Mosers instead. I get weird decision paralysis around this sort of stuff....

Could just be the audience, the last three watch events I’ve been to, there was always one guy (all different) with an ALS1. Never have seen one outside of that setting.

Yeah, I hear the same about the VC. I remember only a few years back they were well under retail. I was too busy buying other brands thinking they’d stay at that price or drop. Clear miss on my part.

You clearly run in more premium crowds than me 😜

I figure the Overseas is headed below retail again pretty soon with cheap money ebbing. Just gotta wait that one out.

That Cartier is an absolute beaut

·

Great post. Moar Rolex content, yay! 😉

That 289 is lovely. I’ve been close to buying one of these simple 36.5 dressy models, but,

  1. Never tried on before

  2. Like you, I lean towards peacock watches, so it’s not quite my MO going for classy simple

Saw the small PRX in white on the wrist of a company rep - a great guy who also loves watches, so even though it’s not my cup of tea (and I think it looks too small) I was happy to give some compliments 👍

Always love spotting a turtle! It's a big watch definitely.

As for the Diesel, I do wonder if we would all have as much of an objection to fashion watches if they were reasonably proportioned. Like that Diesel is very evidently in too big a case relative to the movement. Just a random thought.

You might be on to something with regards to fashion watches. Proportion is not their thing. It's all about appearance relative to your outfit and your activity. Fashion watch designers don't care so much about the design of the watch as an independent object, but rather as part of the whole look of a given person.

I saw a special watch today. I hope my friend doesn't mind me sharing if he's on WC. Everyone here would appreciate, especially as Edge, you said you like Daytonas.

The 6265 Daytona, aka big red or floating big red. It was his father's when he was born and he had the photo to boot! What a special watch that was passed into the son. V special story, connection, and watch.

Wow.

A unicorn of a watch and in exceptional condition. I think there's something to the aesthetics of this period of chronographs that sparks my imagination: old Heuers, Nina Rindts, and this 6265( and I suppose the 6263 as well).

You’re not wrong about the Datejust Wimbledon dial and I would also question where seed funding is really going if the founder is rocking a rose gold Daytona. At least come lower key with the white gold version on Oysterflex. 😆

I could write a book about how ugly the Wimbledon dial is. Perhaps I will some day. It offends every sense of my watch loving brain, including the parts that I didn't think could be offended.

With regards to fund raising....that was kinda my feeling. it's just a weird look.
