I love the sight of a "proper" watch. It's a joy to scan through WRUW and seeing the many posts, love em all!
However, the more I look and adore is the more I realize, I really hate seeing a black dial watch on brown straps, it just doesn't sit well with me. Now, I totally agree with the sentiment "to each their own" and so this is obviously just MY personal gripe.
The only watch I really think pulls this off well is the BB58;
So of course in my collection, if it's got a black dial, it goes on a black strap... Or pretty much any other colour but brown when it has a black dial. Right? Or am I crazy?

Before posting I've just checked all mine and black dials are on black straps or bracelets. The BB58 gets away with it due to the brown tones in the numerals and markers.
I have to say that I haven't noticed it before, but I agree. Happy to be corrected if there's evidence to the contrary...

Yup! Exactly why the BB58 pulls it off.
Lol double checked there didn't yah. I'm a bracelet guy so I never really do straps but recently I've been messing with silicone so black with black, blue with blue, black with blue and it continues. Never brown with black lol
I think it depends on the watch but you can make it work.
Yeah, youโre crazy. ๐
Yeah, youโre crazy. ๐
Ok yeah, I won't argue here.. I might be crazy because that longines ๐คค๐คค still think it would look better on a black strap though. ๐คท๐พ

Agreed, I know it can work... I just ๐ฅด... Nah, it looks better on black ๐

100% this.
A strap pairing works best when it is complimentary to something on the dial.
It can work in other situations if the person wants it to.
My Breitling Navitimer 1461 was a special order but I neglected to specify the strap came with a black crocodile on clasp but I requested a dark brown. Personal preference.

๐คค what a watch! Yeah I get it, that's why I said I'm the problem. I know for sure it looks good on you. I just couldn't.
I'm definitely a black dial, brown strap guy. I think in this case a lighter brown strap usually looks best.
Two rules I have always lived by in my life, never own black shoes, black belts or even black watch straps. Now I have bought watches that came on black straps but quickly changed it to brown or cognac colored ones. Black is for people who have no personal style, there, I said it!

Well, I never lol! I think you might be right. My personal style is all about matching metals and materials, unless, I'm intentionally going for a particular look.
You can send all your black straps here ๐, I know what to do with em.

Yeaaaah, lighter brown, the shade contrast enough... That combination I can make an exception for.... That I'd try.
I think black dial and a sand coloured strap (does that count as brown?) is really appealing but a darker brown usually doesnโt suit a black dial
I think the brown works well on the Tudor given the gilt and red. I recently tried the same with this Mido and my wife laughed, remarking itโs not Halloween Charlie Brown. Evidently a combo of brown, black and orange is a no go. I gave up and reverted to the black band. Sorry, no help here.
Totally agree, ๐๐พ. For the most part as long as it's on your wrist it should be a nice watch to you. Only vote that matters right?

Same, for the most part. I almost never wear black, if I have a choice. Had too sometimes as my Army dress required black shoes. Recently I bought a black strap for my GMT M2 to dress it up and it looked great to be honest.
Most of my straps are some degree of brown or tan and most of my watches have black dials.
Iโve tried every manner of color with my Tudor GMT as I almost never wear on a bracelet anymore. Itโs such a fat thick boy that I need to lighten the load and wear it only with straps, leather or fabric.
By the by, whatโs your second rule?
How do you think about orange and pink straps with black dial ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
The world needs more #orange!
Yeah, youโre crazy. ๐
Brown against black is a great combo!

Two watches to share. First is your point about a lighter brown strap works well also because this is a yellow gold case.
But here's a dark brown strap that works well. What do you think? The lighting wasn't great in the boutique. Further below is a stock photo from the website though it isn't as brown as it looks on the website.

Canโt agree more! BB58 on a Brown Nato ๐
Yeah, youโre crazy. ๐
Anyone who says brown doesn't look good on the Speedmaster or Avigation Big Eye clearly never had these legends on their wrist before ๐

Good eye, only because it came on that strap.๐It doesnโt count, itโs rubber after all, for the water.
You're not crazy. You're just expressing a personal preference. For you.
What can anyone really say to that? I agree with you... I disagree with you...?
My Seiko shipped with a dark brown nato and I'm yet to find a better combination that work well with gilt accents. The watch is a bit of strap monster but I keep coming back to this strap.
I think for me, a black dial with a black strap looks quite "heavy", but that might be good or bad depending on the size of the watch compared with the size of someone's wrist.

Ahhh I can't knock this... It has the gilt accents. Ok Toothless, I see you. Personally, would never wear a nato strap but this does look fantastic.
I agree wholeheartedly ...black dont go with brown on a watch lol

The lighter brown strap looks awesome!
