How often do you wear your tool watches for their actual purpose? Do you wear your divers to dive? Do you wear your chronograph to time stuff? etc

Hardly anyone dives with a dive watch anymore, a tiny percentage have ever submerged in water, let alone Into the ocean. I salute those who do. There are some great pictures on here of dive watches in their natural habitat.

The water resistance and timing bezel make dive watches in particular great for everyday use.

A timing bezel is my most used feature on a watch. Mine time anything from cooking, car trips, breaks, lunch breaks, walking the dog, to how long he's been in his cage while we go out ect.

I don't drive racing cars on the track, I don't dive deeper than 40cm in a pool, I don't hike, etc. but the Chrono and diver are important in my daily life to keep track of time in the kitchen when I cook, or to measure time on long drive traveling, or to take some medication

Use mine for timing of events and soak times. Swim with them too.

Never.

I used to be a paid diver, though it was only with an umbilical in large fish tanks. I used a Timex Ironman and Suunto Core, but that was well before I was into watches.

·

I wear waterproof dive watches because I'm an English Biker.. 🏍️🌧️💦

So bit of all of them, tho blummin' hate getting wet 🤣

Went diving in Australia back in September

I picked B, but I'm still going to leave a post.

I don't dive, nor do I like dive watches so I don't own any and won't.

I'm not a pilot, but I do own one flieger dialed watch. I bought it because it's black and orange and I love that combination.

I'm no longer in the military, but I own field watches. Because I like the way they look.

I really like dress watches. Though I'm usually in jeans and a t-shirt. I've even been known to wear shorts or joggers while wearing a dress watch.

I buy what I like. I dress how I like. I what ever watch that strikes me for the day. And, I don't care what anyone thinks about what watch I wear with what clothes I'm wearing.

I've worn my 200m Orient diver in the 8 Inch deep inflatable pool with the kids, and just used my Seagull 1963 today to time the wait at the DMV. I also use it to time pancakes when I'm making those.

Do I wear a dive watch for its intended purpose of going down depths? No. But I still wear them for several reasons:

  • Sense of security that the watch is gonna still look good bumped up or scratched

  • Sense of security that water won't damage it

  • I like the look and the flexibility of a dive watch

  • I do like timing things with the bezel (but rotating it is also very satisfying)

Realistically, all watches tool or otherwise have outlived their practical purpose. Doesn't mean we can't still enjoy them for other things.

Is a GMT a tool watch? My hour bezel and quickset hour get a mean workout a few times a year.

·

So all my divers have never been on a dive but I live on a lake I reach or go play in the water multiple times a day. I do use my chronograph for grilling times. Are either one necessary no but since I have them I at least want to use them.

·

I’ve a couple of dressy divers which I won’t take to the beach (lesson learned the hard way), but overall - my watches are bought for a specific purpose and that’s what I use them for - beach, office, sports, fancy nights out :)

I use my chronograph to time things sometimes, like 3 cooking eggs, grilling, smoking stuff, or timing events when I do tests at work. My coworkers pull out their phones and I use my chronograph. Of course, they make fun of me, but it's ok. I also use my caller GMT because my daughter lives in a different time zone and I'm too lazy to subtract one hour from my time.

·

I don’t wear a chronograph every day but I wear them with some frequency. I time everything I can with them. Want the perfect grilled cheese sandwich? Use a chronograph. Want to time your espresso? Use a chronograph. You get the idea. I’ve never been diving but I do intend to start this year and will be taking my trusty Willard with me.

I don’t explore caves or North Pole but does this count as “A”?

Yes I wear tool watches to do their job of telling time.

·

I do wear it for aesthetics, but I use its tools. I have a diver, and I use the bezel to time things. Like cooking Image

·

I take my Panerai sub tot the beach, Luminor GMT to travel, JLC for dinner and Grand Seiko for day to day. Then I just wear them whenever anyway.

·

I’m zero 😁

·

Chronograph to time stuff. GMTs for travel and coordinate with teams globally (also why I favor GMTs or watches with jump hour). Divers on beach holidays. So yes.

But the aesthetics help 😉

·

I wear my divers when I wash the dishes since our kitchen is too tight to accommodate a dish washer, my chronographs are handy for timing the long moments waiting for my wife to touch up her nail polish when we are already hours late. My Cartier Santos 100 has become my sincere watch, perfect watch when my younger daughter finally married her boyfriend, appropriate when I was asked to deliver a respectful eulogy at a former colleague’s service.

·

I cook in a restaurant and I use a chronograph to time things I'm cooking. I do swim quite a bit. Well I used to swim quite a bit before my hip went bad. Jet skiing and all that in Lake Erie. I use tool watches.

·

I don’t really dive but I wear my dive watches to time things just like a chronograph. Every other tool watch I do use for its purpose.

·

Divers needed a watch that was robust, legible in the light or dark, ignored water, and timed things reliably. People made watches for them and called them dive watches. Many of us also want those traits in a watch because they are all relevant to many other activities. We use the watches as watches, and are thus using them as tools.

If I want a throwing axe, design one, and happen to make a fantastic axe in general, I might call it a throwing axe, but people aren't "using it wrong" if they chop wood with it. It's a good axe. Using an axe as an axe is using it properly, even if it has special considerations built into it that enable it to do things most axes can't.

·

I use my time only watch to… check the time…

Does that count?

I work in building maintenance, and my Hamilton khaki field mechanical is my daily driver.

I do treat my gshock pretty rough
