Boring watches!!

Recently on YouTube I’ve been hearing lots of comments about boring watches.

Some YouTubers think that BB58, Omega AT, Rolex OP, Tudor Ranger, just to name a few are boring.

If by interesting watches they refer to skeletonized designs, new materials and RM models,  I must recognize my self as a boring watch enthusiast!

What’s your take on this topic?

I like boring watches for the most part. 90% of the time I have a black and white watch on my wrist. I might spice it up with a bright colored nato, but I like the option of keeping it boring.

·

I believe a good tool watch might seem boring to some folks but it will outlast so many 'flash in the pan' brands. But sometimes you just have to brighten your day a bit..

Boring is in the mind of the beholder. 🍻

·

Classic designs (such as the pieces you've pointed out above) are TIMELESS not boring!! 😎

·

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Do I need to say anymore?

Enjoy that watch!

Cheers!

·

I guess a black BMW is sort of boring but I would rather drive that than a purple striped monster truck. To each their own.

·

I like boring watches, boring usually means it's not going to be a passing fad.

·

Hi, compared to what? Definitely not if you compare it to globemaster, maybe to seamaster 300.

Image
·

considering my small wrist those weren’t an option for me.

·

Based on that criteria, you could call the entire super-hyped Rolex professional line boring (not that any of these YouTubers would bite the hand that feeds them by courting that opinion in a video).

Oddly, I like all these "boring" watches.

·

Totally. 💯% into the "boring" watch .

Just can't abide all the bling an vulgar excess of the RM , Hublot and skeletonised things you see on these YouTube channels.

·

I was staring at my BBPro today from angles I haven’t really looked at it from and thought “damn this is a beautiful watch”

If someone classes it as boring then so be it.

·

Boring situation calls for a boring watch 🤷🏻‍♂️

Exciting situation calls for an exciting watch 🤷🏻‍♂️

This is the level of madness you must attain

·

Boring & Interesting are both subjective. Maybe some have more conservative colourways or tried and true design but who cares. Get what YOU find interesting.

·

”Boring”, ”subdued”, ”vanilla”. They are the best watches out there. No diamonds, no extravagant patterns. Just perfect design, proportions, dials and materials.

·

Still trying to understand what people think is boring… 80+ posts later I’m still none the wiser. Perhaps the word is uninspired; many of you make uninspired choices, but that’s your decision, and I would argue it’s more based upon what others think rather than what you like, but I don’t want to seem unfair… maybe you all do really think a Seiko or Tudor is the pinnacle of style, and that divers are acceptable as dress watches. I will forever fail to understand the majority of watch fans.

I think many of us (myself included) can fall in love with attempts to achieve the platonic ideal of certain things (be it pizza or watches or whatever). The closest analogy I've witnessed is the scene in American Psycho where they are comparing business cards https://youtu.be/cISYzA36-ZY . The portrayal of the almost lustful emotional response to the level of tastefulness achieved rang true (also hilarious) to me. Some people want unhinged self expression and high-key inventiveness and that's fine. I, however, feel my heartbeat increase and breath become shallow when I see and touch something that has not appreciably changed in decades or longer accept to perfect it and make it more of what it already was. It's a different feeling than seeing creativity, the result of which can be fleeting and trendy. When you wear a submariner or a speedmaster or a santos, what you experience really is a sense of gravity and immortality. It goes beyond the moment where you witness something novel or new and feel a sense of excitement that fades with styles and trends.

I make sure my watches are boring, with only one or two exceptions. I am very much like James May, which means I'm not always the most popular with the younger crowd, i.e. my peers. While everyone lusts after 500mm watches thicker than my arms, I'm looking at manual wind, time-only, 34mm dress watches from the most interesting boring decade of them all: the 70s. Boring, in my mind, is often the same as simple, which is often the same as elegant. You don't need a crazy, wacky watch; it's like having a mini-me clone speak for you and introduce you to every new person you meet.

You should do the talking. Your watch should be like a civilised and wise old man or woman that simply adds to what you say with the occasional "marvelous" or "splendid" instead of talking for you.

I love this community, I never expend that a simple comment will generate almost 800 views, more than a 100 comments and 80 likes, all of them in an environment of respect and appreciation for the other point of view. I still think that I’m a boring watch enthusiast and I’m enjoying my watch collection journey the way I want! Cheers, Daniel!!!

99% of the time I wear a steel field watch with black letters. My newest purchase is about the most daring I've ever gotten and I think it's still fairly simple. The 36mm explorer is my absolute grail and I'll gladly be bored any day of the week

·

Follow your own taste, Youtubers are boring! 🙂

·

Watches are an expression of personal taste. I find something simple executed perfectly to be extremely interesting. Tudor does that brilliantly.

Love both of these. Great strap choice on the Oris!

·

Think YouTubers talking about the same watches all of the time, probably bore themselves to death.

As for the watches, definitely not boring

EXACTLY, I couldn't agree more! Just enjoy the watches you own and wear them in good health. If there's something in your collection that you no longer like or wear, gift it away, sell it, or trade it with someone.

What's wrong with a purple striped monster truck? I happen to drive one. ;-)

I waited all my life to get that call from the dealership to get the chance to buy my purple striped monster truck...... 53 years in the making. I even took up a love for country music to qualify.
