I watched a video on youtube the other day where a couple of people tested cheap dive watches rated to 100m. The quartz pulsar was able to withstand pressures of more than a kilometer deep! The other watch was a Vostok. It held up to pressure equaling about 600m. So it makes me wonder if we are all being paranoid about waterproofness.

This same watch is on my list. I have one before it, then it's Santos time

I've tried on both of them and I think I would have to choose the Omega in this match-up. It's a little more interesting imo

I think many of us (myself included) can fall in love with attempts to achieve the platonic ideal of certain things (be it pizza or watches or whatever). The closest analogy I've witnessed is the scene in American Psycho where they are comparing business cards https://youtu.be/cISYzA36-ZY . The portrayal of the almost lustful emotional response to the level of tastefulness achieved rang true (also hilarious) to me. Some people want unhinged self expression and high-key inventiveness and that's fine. I, however, feel my heartbeat increase and breath become shallow when I see and touch something that has not appreciably changed in decades or longer accept to perfect it and make it more of what it already was. It's a different feeling than seeing creativity, the result of which can be fleeting and trendy. When you wear a submariner or a speedmaster or a santos, what you experience really is a sense of gravity and immortality. It goes beyond the moment where you witness something novel or new and feel a sense of excitement that fades with styles and trends.

I can think of a few. Some probably surprising.

1) The new 41mm Rolex submariner: This watch (the Sub in general) has such a ubiquitous design that I found it over-exposed and was bored by it. Had zero interest until I tried one on at my AD. Then I understood what all the fuss was about. LOVE! particularly the no date version.

2) Cartier Santos medium in steel: Uhhhhh, drool. In pics it just looks too dressy and formal. On the wrist it's sleek, refined, and manly all at the same time. Amazing form. The bracelet is so, so well imagined and executed. It's my favorite of all the integrated bracelet watches that everyone has been going on about. Versatile too.

3) Tudor Black Bay Pro: It's thick but IRL it's wearable — which sounds like faint praise, but the whole look of the dial, hands, bezel, crystal, etc is really nice. On pictures it looks thick and boring. IRL it's thick but not too bad and subtly beautiful. Really grows on you.

I think it looks cool as long as the leather strap matches the ruggedness of the watch. It does sort of defeat the purpose of having a watch that you can get wet tho.

I don't usually mind when it's a well considered design. It's supposed to look as though the subdials were placed on top of the dial that exists behind it—obscuring some elements from view. This is a graphic design trick that you see literally everywhere if you pay attention. It doesn't bother me at all, but rather adds some dynamism to a good design. If I see it utilized as part of a bad design, then it might be one element that I complain about. This has been done since the early days of watchmaking.
