Birth Year Watches ... what do you think?

OK, so every so often I get the idea to go hunting for a watch from the year I was born, 1982; and while there are a few sites that sell by year, they mainly stock the expensive stuff like Rolex and gold watches.

What do you think, do any of you have one or would you consider one?

This time my hunt has gone to ebay with a simple search for 1982 watches and some of them are really affordable and still look like they would last years to come, mainly quartz.

I have one picked out. A Tudor prince day date model #7020/0. Year old.

Didn’t vote as none of the options appealed to me. Certainly not for suckers but personally I wouldn’t go out of my way to find one.

I haven’t seen many watches from 1956 that are special but I would have a BB 58 if I didn’t have a BB GMT, does that count?

·

I was born in 1992 and have two watches from 1991… does that count? Having a close to birth year watch is okay - it felt like an excuse to get more watches

·

I like the idea of a birth year watch (1962) I’m not sure how many brands can be dated that far back with the exception of Longines and Omega.

Bulova and Seiko, I believe.

I just looked up brands I liked with the year. I decided on a Seiko 7002 from 1991.

We're close in age. I was fortunate to have Omega come out with their launch of the Speedmaster in 1957. My birth year, so I bought a Broad Arrow. I do also have another watch actually made in 1957. But I like old cars & 'old' bourbon too.

This is my 1982 Seiko TV dial Bangladesh Special. It’s not my favorite watch but it’s my 1982 birth year watch. I think I paid $60 on eBay and a $200 service to get it running properly.

Not quite money well spent but I like it. I say find one that’s weird, and go for it!

I've got a Seiko that's not just from my birth year, but the same month too. I tell people we both came out of our factories within weeks of each other.

That's the sort of level I was thinking, seen some clean dial options on ebay but would definitely need a service and so a new bezel insert, but if its something unusual I can see the value in adding it to the collection

I started a similar thread a month or so ago, same birth year 1982. For me, it was the 40th anniversary Arnie. Used to watch all the films with my dad, so every time I wear this watch I feel like Arnie and close to my dad... not a bad feeling at all!

·

2005… yeah I think I'll have no problems with that one, I'll maybe wait another decade till I'm 30 and the watch can be 'vintage'

·

What if your birth year pre dated the existence of watches? 🤔

I'm not quite that bad, but this first Seiko diver in a museum is gonna be hard to get.

I know what you mean, to me it's the year it was sold, and it's as much the idea of something that has been around as long as me. I guess to some extent the same can be said for people as we grow new cells and all, but it's the same soul in the end .... way to deep for me and a Thursday night

·

I definitely will own one one day. Just got to figure out what model to go after

And get the money 💰

If I get a birth year watch, it'll probably be by accident. If the same watch made in a different year can be had for less I would take it over a birth year.

Also lots of good Seiko options out there! The Seiko Guy.com has a great collection of old catalogs on his website, which is great for finding reference numbers and knowing what's out there.

·

How about ‘meh’ as a poll option? I don’t think the choice is for ‘suckers’, yet have no interest. If you want to add to your collection in this direction you aren’t a ‘sucker’. You are a watch collector developing your collection. My interest, or lack, is irrelevant.

·

Because I’m old I didn’t actually want to get a watch from my birth year. I mean let’s throw in a powdered wig while we’re at it.

So opted for the SPB147 which was in honour of the 1965 seiko 62mas diver

Thanks for the suggestion of the catalogues, one thing I have found hard is to see what came out that year to know what I would love to have

Do it!

I have a few on my watchlist on ebay, just going round in circles about what my next watch will be .... JDM or birth year or more expensive something or just a interesting Swiss quartz piece. Decisions decisions

·

My wife and I are expecting a first grandkid in October, wanted to buy one of the Peanuts Seiko 5 watches introduced this year, reached out to sellers too late, all sold out! I guess I can continue looking for something appropriate that will be produced this year. There is always the secondary market for an entry level Seiko? The world is now nuts!

·

I have seen quite a few of those new Snoopy watches online but not clocked the prices to know if they are flippers or just people who did not gel with them.

Good luck with the hunt and still plenty of time for something similar to be released before the big day!
