Magnetized Powermatic 80

Got this back after three weeks away at Tissot. Was advised by the service centre that the watch had become magnetized. Despite the fact that this version of the Powermatic 80, has the silicon hairspring and the polymer/plastic/bio-ceramic (😉) escapement, it started to run at almost double speed. I don’t work near MRI scanners or been near the CERN particle acceleratr btw

The seconds hand was sight to behold (like a fast spring drive, in fact!). Will try to be a bit more careful with it in the future

I've found out that especially potent, or old school, electronic equipment, speakers, phones, computers, etc can inadvertently magnetize stuff too.

You haven't been playing with rare earth magnets, or sleeping in a magnetometer at the airport have you? 😉🫣

Not to my knowledge 😂 but evidence would definitely suggest otherwise!

Will have find the offending item in my life…!

I hope the issue doesn't continue! Especially curious given the silicon hairspring...

I had a weird issue with my Hamilton, although it's a quartz model and totally unrelated to yours, but your comment about your second hand moving so fast reminded me of mine doing the same:

Yours is definitely a strange case. Has it run fine since?

At first it started doing it intermittently and I thought it was me not setting the time correctly. But nope, the watch was definitely gaslighting me…

·

Are you sure it has a silicon hairspring? I thought all PRXs had the 80.111 variant of the PM80 with a standard hairspring. It should say "Silicium" on the dial and/or have the "Si" medallion on the movement if it has an 80.811.

Nope, the issue continues. Cold watch runs fine, warm watch runs super fast. I'll likely have to replace the movement, if I can find one at a reasonable price.

Interesting - Thanks. Will have to get the loupe out tonight and inspect further!

Oh!

Well some people have ‘holiday/vacation watches’…this can fill the niche when you go visit a cold climate country!

Amazing. Luckily my SeaStar 2K with Powermatic has never been near strong magnetic field either 🤣

There you have it. Problem solved.

I just sent the issue to Hamilton for comment and an estimate.

Time to invest in a demagnetiser...I see some on amazon for as little as £10 (sick photo btw)

Sorry to hear about your experience.

I won’t get you started, then….😬

I'm majorly pissed. Just think about sending your watch in for the third time because of the most basic of things a serious "watchmaker" should be thinking about (lubrication of the geartrain and hands that actually point to the thing they're supposed to).

You having a magnetized watch even though they advertise their stupid Nivachron hairspring as being magnet-resistant is just icing on the already spoiled cake...

Powermatic 80. Never again.

The real question is!! Does it Tickle your Pickle??! 😜

Dude!! As usual you don’t disappoint with the attire and color combo !! 🥳🍻

In 40 years or wearing watches I have never had one magnetized. (Famous last words) How does it happen?

I had a Tag Carrera that I sat down on my notebook. I didn’t think about it at the time but I had sat it down on top of the magnets that hold it closed. It started to run about 15-20 minutes fast a day. I sent it off for service anyway because it hadn’t been done.

·

Plastic escape wheel and palete fork, steel hair spring ... Worst of both worlds. But it's a PRX so what do you expect 😅

I expect it to still look pretty….and not go near induction hobs with it….😉

Ive done things like that lots of times without issue. It just seems so random.

For all your watches' sake, I'm afraid you will have to tone it down.

Sorry for this bad experience.

But the PRX doesn't has a Silicon hair spring.

The Powermatic 80 is to be seperated in...

  • C07.111

  • C07.611

  • C07.811

The C07.811 has a silicon hairspring, the the C07.611 a Nivachron. Both should be also free of plastic.

But the PRX does use the C07.111. Without Silicon.

Tissot did used the C07.811 so far only at the Gentleman and one single model of the Seastar. Usually it can be found in the higher tiers of the swatch group as like Union Glashütte.

The branding of "Powermatic" can be therefore very confusing.

Thanks for this info. Think we got to the bottom of it. Explains why it affected this particular watch and not my others

I don't know if others mentioned. But next time if think your watch might be magnetized, just bring it to the next watchmaker. It's a mather of a minute to put it on its demagentize tool (don't know if I named it right in english). Usually if the watchmaker knows you as a customer they don't even charge you anything.

If you use a laptop, some use magnets to keep the screen/lid closed and can magnetize your watch. FYI.
