HELP! Weird Watch Behavior: Hamilton Masterpiece Quartz

Hey WC family, I have a strange issue with my Hamilton Masterpiece quartz watch.

It runs perfectly when it's in the watch box, but soon after I put it on, it runs at about 2x speed! I've never had a watch do this, and I'm stumped as to what it could be.

I put it back in the watch box and it runs fine again. Go figure.

Any ideas?

Very strange, how old is it? I don't see that model anywhere. Have you looked to see what movement is in there?

It's a vintage piece that I purchased earlier this year from Goodwill. The model is 908080 and was presented to someone back in 1985, based on the inscription on the back. I haven't tried to identify the quartz movement in it. If I recall correctly, I did change the battery out once since it was purchased. I wonder if it has an AC that I need to ground out and perhaps missed...

Here is the movement. I left the pic full size for zooming in. There appears to be the letter "G" with an arrow pointing to a screw. I just now grounded that screw to the negative side of the battery (exposed) and it did not resolve the problem, so I'm not sure if that screw is the grounding point or the "G" stands for something else.

Worth a try, hope you bottom it out.

New information.

As a test to see if the issue is related to temperature, I put it in the freezer and it ran fine. Took it out and put it under a hair dryer and voilà, it started running super fast.

So my wrist is heating it up, causing the issue.

Something is connected when cool that is not connected when hot. Or vice-versa. Sounds like my circuit board or some other vital part is toast.

·

Haha, that'll be a great opener at parties! 🤣

The drift is serious, as I mentioned before, almost 2x speed! It's crazy!

·

You are obviously possessed by some kind of wraith…and your combined energy is doubling the voltage to the step motor. That happened to my aunt years ago when she attempted to use her plug in after visting a haunted cave in Arizona from where John Carter of Mars teleported.

·

Sooo... are you gonna tell us about your brief stint working at area 51 or that's still a secret? Because what the heck ..

·

I should have thought of that first. I'm overdue for an extensor retinaculum service. I hope I didn't void my warranty!

May be it doesn’t like you and trying to run away twice as fast 😉

That could be. I'm a heavily flawed person.
