Watch Enthusiast’s Watch

There are some watches that are definitely eye catching. But many watches out there don’t really confirm the wearer’s enthusiasm for watches. Take Rolexes for example. They’re definitely well regarded watches but wearing one doesn’t mean you’re into watches. It could just be a flex of wealth.

But then there are watches you spot on other people’s wrists that undoubtedly confirm the wearer is a watch LOVER. When someone wears a CW Bel Canto, for example, you just know that he/she loves watches.

So what are some watches that you’ve spotted on strangers in the wild that confirm for you this person MUST be a watch lover? Only recount real life examples you’ve seen that have given you this feeling - don’t tell me hypotheticals.

For me, I saw someone on the subway today wearing a Grand Seiko spring drive watch, and I felt like this individual must be a watch LOVER. I couldn’t tell exactly which model it was, but the fact that it was a GS Spring Drive was enough for me to signify this person loves watches.

The purpose of some watches is to “shout” and the purpose of others is to “not shout”. I would put GS in the latter so definitely a watch for those who are in the know - quiet appreciation.

Excellent point. I ran across a woman who was checking me out of a shop and to my delight she was wearing a Nomos. And it was a particularly beautiful white dial piece. I remarked upon it, and she happily gave it to me to examine. That was a nice moment.

Another time recently I met a guy in another shop (where was that?) who had an obvious enthusiast watch. I inquired and yes, he was very pleased to have a little watch-blather. It’s fun.

@solidyetti where’s the angel killer?

I would say that anyone wearing just about any microbrand is a watch lover. Because you have to go down the rabbit hole pretty hard to even know those exist. Among the mainstream brands, I agree with you on Grand Seiko, and I would put Glashutte Original, Lange, Oris, and a few others in that category.

Beauty!

Sheer beauty!

Grand Seiko really is the top of watchmaking, in my humble opinion. The technology, passion and level of commitment that goes into these watches is off the charts.

Very well done!

Very good question. I would say H Moser at the high horology level. For lower price range, probably a G-Shock Frogman.

·

My vote would be for something like this. If you see a Daniel Roth in the wild, you know you have found someone truly passionate about horology:

You have to see the individual as well as the watch, I know a lot of middle age and older individuals who wear Rolex including gold D/Ds who are serious watch enthusiasts. I once enjoyed a long conversation with a shoe sales clerk who might be one of the most iintense watch guys that I have ever met, he does not own a watch.

I can confirm: watch lover 🤣

Rolex screams but Grand Seiko whispers

Beautiful piece you got there

Anyone who has something like a Steinhart, Sinn or a Squale. Brands you might see on Gnomon, Joma or discussed here; but not sold in a mall or a jewelry store.

Those brands are examples, I am sure others can think of more.

GS = Shouting, without shouting.
