What would be/was your first gold watch?

If you don't already own a gold watch, what would be your first choice for a yellow or rose gold timepiece?

If you do, what was your first gold watch purchase?

Wanted to leave out white gold, or bronze, or other non-gold colored selections as I'm curious to hear what would tip someone over to the gold side.

Don't currently own one, would love to have any variant of the Patek Phillippe 5127 some day.  It just screams class:

This is my first gold-colored watch - I believe it's PVD:

And, because I liked it so much, I got an actual two-tone watch:

Clearly you're bi-color curious.  Or full gold curious.  So, what is on your mind?  Which gold watch is in your sights?

oh man! @Omeganut beat me to it lol...

I wouldn’t say I have one in my sights, but the Black Bay GMT S&G keeps playing in my mind and it got me thinking about gold in general.

I mean, one day I’d love to own a Lange 1, and on those I just feel like the black dial works better with a yellow gold case.  And I like the black dial.

That's an awesome watch.  Though, it is 15mm thick.  And every review I've read or watched of Tudor always mentions how thick they are - like slab-sided so they feel as thick as the specs would suggest.

If your wrist can handle it, dude, you should do it!  Looks phenomenal!

I already have the Black Bay Bronze and I love that one. It is a bit tall but it’s not a deal breaker for me. The BBB is 43mm x 14.5mm, and the new GMT is the same thickness just with a 41mm case. That may make it look a bit taller with the slightly smaller case, but at 6’7”, I don’t think it would look out of place on me.

I do not currently own one.

I probably had one in the age of my youth when I was intrigued by watches, but had not the funds or sensibility to collect. Therefore, it probably got damaged & replaced.

Now, if I were to get one, it would be the gold Speedy.

This is going to sound so stupid but my first ever gold watch was my two tone Daytona.

Image

I put myself down on the list for a ceramic steel daytona, back when such things were hypothetically attainable back in that far off year of 2018. I totally forget about it for years because it turns out they were the hottest watches of the century. In 2021, my AD calls and tells me in no uncertain terms I'm never getting a ceramic Daytona but because he is a mensch he has a two tone available from someone who didn't pickup on the first ring.

I figure why look gift horse in the mouth.  If I hate it, I can always contribute to the problem of the Rolex grey market.

As it turns out, I love the character of two tone (80s baby) though I struggle for occasions to wear it.

The BB two tone GMT is absolutely killer.  I feel like that has future super classic written all over it.

My first gold-coloured watch was a fake Calibre de Cartier, complete with a fallen-off cabochon. Above is my gold-toned Galaxy watch from Korea, which is my first "real" gold toned watch.

For actual gold, I'm quite torn. Either the rose gold Ballon Bleu or the two tone champagne Datejust.

You know, it's funny, but I had something similar happen, but in a totally different context.  I can't remember how, but in college the subject of "your first kiss" came up - probably a bunch of us were blasted drunk at the time, and when it got to my turn, well, not to brag, but this is the first gal I ever kissed:

So, kinda like your two-tone Daytona!

(What I never told everyone was that she was babysitting me at the time - I was 6 and she was 12 - and I asked her if she would give me a kiss as she tucking me in bed, and she let me kiss her on the cheek.  I kissed her before Axl Rose!)

could argue that the first watches I owned were gold/gold plate, and therefore I could easily do gold, even from a young age. I’m a lot younger than you think I am to be wearing watches twice my age as a de facto choice.

I got to see in real life and try on this one recently. It was simply the nicest object I’ve ever held in my hands. I would give a kidney for it if necessary. But, alas, my wife was with me and she demands a new kitchen and new bathroom before I ever think about something like this. If I came home with this now, I would lose a part of my body other than a kidney.

I too would sell a kidney for one of these.

Yes and all the better because my parents are HK expats and said it completely unprompted.  Its good to know some mediocre experiences are universal.

Dude!  My family is all HK expats too!

Until very, very recently, I couldn't see my mom or my aunt without then spending the rest of the week muttering angrily to myself, arguing with them in my head all week long.

"Omeganut, aiya, no, no, no...  you go buy gas from Costco.  Why you waste money?  Costco cheapest.  You so stupid."

"Omeganut, aiya, why you order 3 french fry?  Every time, you kids no eat it all.  No waste, okay?"  This, followed by a 15 minute lecture on the virtues of saving every penny humanly possible.

I'd try to reason with them.

"Aunt Sanny, we're not in China anymore.  The Japanese are not invading.  Mao isn't coming for our land.  It's okay to order 3 fries, just in case the kids are hungry.  I ain't gonna go back in line and wait another 15 minutes if they do finish the 2 orders of fries and want more.  We can afford the $2."

"Omeganut...  you so stupid."

Therapy, man!  I finally took the plunge, and after like 5 sessions, instead of wanting to throw them into a wood chipper, I actually, for the first time in my life, enjoy their company and want to actually spend time with them!  And, it's none of this, "Tell me about your childhood," BS either.  It's all straight behaviorist stuff, like I'm a pigeon picking at levers in a Skinner box.

"If your Aunt Sanny does A, you do B.  If she does X, you do Y."  She brings up money and not wasting...  I completely ignore her, no facial expression, nothing...  and then bring up whatever topic I want instead.  It's like this:

This is all a long-winded way of saying, I know what your life must be like, brother.  If you want the referral to the therapist, just let me know - he's in the Bay Area too!

Gold watches aren't really for me, so my one and only is the 60's Connie that I inherited from my granddad. He had it on a gold beads of rice bracelet which was way too much for me so I had to tone it down with an old man style crocodile grain. One of my most treasured possessions even though it doesn't get worn. It just sits in the middle of my box reminding me of my much missed granddad Ronnie whenever I look at it!

if money isnt an issue i would buy gold daydate, but if money is a issue i would buy gold seiko 5 😂

I don’t own a gold watch and probably never will, I just prefer my watches to fly under the radar a bit more. But if I ever was to get a gold watch, it would have to be the handwound large Tank Louis

I'm sure I can get an aftermarket bezel and bracelet for my square, but this watch is just so cool and still reasonably within grasp even! I like that combination of "high" (gold) and "low" (digital, quartz). And surely it'll be hard to break.

I was lucky.  I spent 11 years across the country from them incl college and post college, sought therapy similar to yours early on and it's been actually pretty good for near on a decade.

It eventually gets to the point when you realize that this is the way they make conversation.  Something about the neuroses of that generation are burned in deep that asking why you're wasting money or commenting that you're getting fat/not eating enough is like asking about the weather.

Still get the comments though but I can laugh easier about them.

I'm not really into wearing gold, but I do have this 1966 Bulova Accutron with a gold filled case.

Image
·

Initially I wasn’t that into gold watches. But they have definetly grown on me.

My only solid gold piece is the Tissot my father handed down to me

Image

Later I added some gold capped vintage pieces

Image
Image
·

I’ve had plenty of gold filled watches but this was my first solid gold model.  There are some solid deals on vintage pieces.

Image
·

I have been getting into gold quite a bit lately. As of now, I own one watch that has a "gold" case that I got when I was sixteen. I also have a two-toned Movado museum from the same time.

The last watch with gold I bought after those two is an Omega Polaris. Really interesting having that gold inlay.

For future purchase considerations, I have had a few options in mind. In the short term, I wanted to celebrate a career goal with a gold gaudy watch (gaudy in relation to my style).

My original thought was this Omega Geneve

Image

Great green and gold combination. The fumee dial is well executed. It's a vintage piece of the era I am trying to replicate. It's also another Omega which I have two of (so would fit in nicely there). It's just exactly what I want, but more than I am willing to pay for this kind of watch (something that I know I won't wear very often).

So from this, I kind of go down to three options

Lorier Falcon II in PVD Gold with a green dial

Image

It has the green/gold gaudy look that I am looking for. I think I can pull it off thanks to it's smaller case size. I also know how to make it look like it has an integrated rubber look so I can make it sportier with a green rubber. It also fits nicely into my collection with two other Lorier pieces. I have a few thoughts that make me full the trigger on this one (or pull the mental trigger I should say). One thing that keeps me away is the dial might be too dark (can't find any reviews of this online to get a better idea of what to expect). Another is that I already have 2 Lorier products and there is so much more to see out there!

From here I go to the newest PRX Releases by Tissot with the Gold 35MM PRX

Image

Fits the look I am looking for once again. Smaller size and water resistance so easy to wear. I don't mind the quartz because I know I won't wear this often. I don't like that it's pretty much forsaken to the bracelet (integrated bracelets yay). And then on another end I feel like at this price range I could definitely support a microbrand for a similar price and get a better product.

That leads me to the Le Sablier Sport Classic Eclipse

Image

It seems almost perfect! All I would prefer is a dial swap to either something white, green or even gold. I already have a gold/black watch that I mentioned earlier (the watch I got at 16). So why buy this when I have that one. Two very different watches, but this is how my brain works, unfortunately.

So here I am having to make a decision somewhat soon for which of these 3 to buy!

I do have the same though process for what gold (actual gold) watch I want! But I will keep that to myself for now haha

·

This was my first and only full gold. The itch stopped after this (bought new in 2017)

Image
·

If price were no consideration it would be a toss up between the new VC 222 and a Rolex DayDate. As I could not afford either, my only gold (plated) watch is my Bulova Clipper.
