Torn...cartier santos medium or tag heuer monaco?

Lately I've come to the realization I have no square or rectangle watches, and feel one to my collection would really round out my options (pun intended). What does the community think between Cartier Santos and the Monaco from Tag? Both have fantastic history and both I feel are very unique. I just don't know which way to lean. The Santos feels more versatile, but the monaco has amazing racing/car heritage, and I do consider myself a car enthusiast. However, it DOES seem like it is a bit bigger on wrist that may border too large for my taste.

What do you guys think when it comes to iconic square cased watches?

For now, ignore the Rado to the right, although it is pretty cool looking.

This isn’t even close. Cartier Santos everyday and twice on Sunday.

Any specifics as to what makes it so one sided? Is the bezel scratch issue over blown on the santos?

·

Monaco for me, in a heartbeat.

Easily the Santos. It's what I chose anyhow.

It is worth trying on each. Both wear totally different. The Monaco is a chunky beast, but more sporty and easier to dress down. While technically the Santos is a sports watch, no one now thinks so. Certainly wears more dressy.

I know folks do not care for it, but also look at something from the BR05 line.

Thanks for the comments guys but so far no inputs on why you choose one or the other....I hope it's not the rolex effect at play here because yes the cartier has that recognition where tag kind of gets dumped on these days

Thank you, this is exactly the type of detailed response I was looking for. I'll be honest I'm more a a t-shirt and jeans guy, even at the office I'm more casual with a polo at most so I'm trying to account for dressy vs sporty for sure

Biased 😉 towards Cartier Santos medium. Not even close IMO. The Santos (especially that size) has a feel of sports watch when it needs/wants, but then also refined elegance because of the wrist presence. So, it is kind of a mix between the Santos in Large and a Tank (it is not a Tank, I know), it just has that feel because of the refinement at the medium size on wrist. The Large size for the Santos makes it a little bit something else, but medium is just perfection.

Also, the history behind the Santos is equally, if not more, iconic. First wristwatch, first "sports" watch, first "pilot" watch (Santos-Dumont), all within its own way.

At the end of the day, this is just my take. Please go with your choice and preference. It is what YOU like... and enjoy!

The Tagheuer Monaco is such an icon. I own Santos XL, love them both but I use the Monaco more.

I have both, but I find it hard to pull off the Santos casually, the bracelet just does work for me in that regard. Just my take. The BR05 is also not small, but more versatile (photo W&W)

Of if you want to step up, the Glashütte Original Seventies is killer. Comes in a couple dial configurations, bracelet, etc.

To bei fair, the Swatch is not more of a toy than those above.

·

Two very diffeeent messages being sent out depending on the watch. Truly depends on what style you prefer. Both are cool in their own right!

·

Cartier Santos ftw, nothing against the Monaco but the overall package of the Santos wears much better, the Monaco has a tall boxy case and wears quite big

·

If I were asked to chose between the two my answer would be YES

·

Both really cool iconic watches. You can't go wrong with either, however if simply try them both on when your feeling in the mood to make the purchase. Make a day of it, try on a couple models of both and colour combinations and your heart will sing when you find the one you want instantly.

If it doesn't sing and make you instantly want it, then don't buy it.

I know it's a little harry potter and the sorting hat method, but it's tried and tested and the wrist and heart know what they want, it's just our brain that stuggles to keep you

Happy shopping

Santos, without even a second thought

·

I think the Santos is more versatile especially if the Monaco feels slightly big. It will affect how often you likely will wear it. But if the Monaco felt the perfect size on my wrist and I had a wardrobe that would fit me wearing the Monaco very often then I might go with it.

TAG Monaco 💸

·

Honestly and personally, I wouldn’t limit myself to one square watch, I’d go for all three (yup, the Rado too) But, if I were to get only one for now, I’ll start with the Santos then the Monaco and then Rado. Hope this helps

·

I've had 2 Santos' and you won't be disappointed! It can literally work for any occasion.

·

I've got the Rado; very nice watch. I also have an original Steve McQueen Monaco and it is a great watch. doesn't get enough wrist time, but none of my watches do.

Im a TAG guy, I absolutely love the brand, all the the hate makes me like them even more. But given the choice, I’d go with the santos first. I’d want both though, lol.

·

I own both the Santos and the Monaco. They are both fantastic, but very different. Santos if you want a dressier piece, Monaco if you want a more sportier piece. Can't go wrong with either

Quartz tough little sports watch and not too chunky for a square watch

·

For me it’s the Santos. I think that the Monaco would look weird in a suit for example, compared to the Santos. Can’t wait to see what you land on!

·

I say Santos,

have the crunchers helped make the decision process easier?
