Watches and coffee, why this combination?

Browsing the web you often see images of watches associated with cups of coffee, it has always intrigued me to understand the reason, does anyone know more?

I don’t get it…

·

Cause you get a cup of coffee and put on a watch in the morning

·

The images always depict someone enjoying a nice espresso drink. They seem to connote leisure. Perhaps the person is taking a trip to Florence to take some photos of David and has just stopped off at a local cafe to imbibe an Americano? Or maybe they're enjoying a latte at home, after finishing their latest novel?

In any event, it indicates a lifestyle that is generally considered aspirational.

Better than photos of watches with this beverage in the background, yeah?

I think that they are both comforting images. They provide a simple joy by creating a traditional and complex solution.

In understanding watches, you can simply slap on a watch or you can dive deep into horology, understanding how each piece interacts to create a whole. In understanding coffee, you can grounds into a filter and add water, or you can understand how roasting, grinding, water pressure, and heat can interact to change the flavors.

Both allow novices, enthusiasts, and experts to interact in familiarity.

Or maybe when you photograph coffee you photograph hands and sometimes one of those hands has a watch on the wrist.

Watches and coffee, why this combination?

People enjoy both?

Caffeine is a mild stimulant, I often make an espresso before cooking dinner but in my personal situation the hot dark drink also relaxes me which is how I want to feel when I am either examining a watch or thinking of a sensible next purchase. My youngest nephew and I sat in a espresso bar/ pool hall for an hour before closing the deal on a mint condition Sea Dweller the summer his family drove from Montreal to help celebrate my wedding to his favourite aunt. That was in 1986, the watch is just as perfect today as it was then. He now also operates a modest on line coffee business that is growing steadily in addition to a regular job loosely connected to communications and the armed forces of Canada. He continues to be a watch enthusiast and drinks his own coffee blends.

No idea what you’re talking about 😂 I think coffee is a great excuse/occasion to have a conversation. Easy to have events like Watches & Coffee, Cars & Coffee, Cycles & Coffee, etc.

Photography using coffee, in my opinion, is meant to incite those senses/feelings you might have sitting back and enjoying a cup. You get the lovely aroma of coffee along with a watch shot. Coffee beans, cups, mugs, spoons, hands, etc… also provide sense of scale. I enjoy the idea of drinking coffee is an act of taking/making time. Just my 2 cents.

Don’t know what you’re talking about? Who takes photos of watches and coffee?? Certainly not me! 🤷🏻‍♂️

I thought it was just a lame "coffee time" sight gag, except for the people that submerge the watch in the beverage because it's a dive watch, dontchaknow?

Watch and coffee goes well give you a out look for the plan of the day or progress. Feels more good on break time.

·

Have zero interest in coffee and personally dislike the smell and taste, but to each their own in that regard. I think beans are neat backdrop and for my friends who are into coffee, are REALLY into coffee, with multi thousand dollar set ups and specialized coffee ordered from around the world.

As the saying goes, what ever you are into, there is always another level. Coffee and watches certainly have that in common.

Love cofee and watches. Can't wait for Fall so I can enjoy a nice hot latte during the cold lol

I'm not sure. I'd always assumed it was started by Adrian Barker.

But I'm going to contrive a connection by noting that making coffee or espresso requires precise timing.

In the fact Brew Retrograph has markers to time the espresso. In my own own, I use the Aeropress with a 2 min time immersion.

You're right, the first one i saw associate coffee with watches was Adrian from BJ.

Coffee is not only dark water to pour unconsciously in the mouth, it is expression of life style: What coffee do you choose, how do you grind it, how do you brew it, how do you drink it, ...? Are you the unconscious Coffee to Go type or the one who celebrates a coffee ceremony? I, e.g., have about ten different coffees from three local coffee roasters who buy the good stuff in small amounts directly from coffee farmers, and sometimes some Italien coffees, I grind it by hand and I choose from a variety of methods how to brew it, that make a different taste out of the same coffee.

I think that there is very much similarity to watches, which express life style too.

I blame @BarkandJack.

Caffeine is an addictive substance.)

I'm not a coffee drinker, but I'm a coffee drinker by proxy

Need a can of that soft drink to start the day, lmao.

And a lot of people is addicted to caffeine. Google says that we drink 2 billion cups of coffee per day. But it's not only about a plain energy boost.

Coffee played a major role in breaking a Berlin Wall. Coffee is about the culture, the tradition, the way of living, not only for individuals, but for whole nations. It's a second most consumed drink after water, and you need more than just a function to get that popularity. So no wonder that watch collectors love coffee. We are humans too.

But watch lovers are also notorious for our pretty special photo composition skills. You HAVE to get a photo of your watch. You can go the classic "wrist shot" way, but sometimes you wanna add a little bit of context in a shot. You need something on a background, right? It's basic composition, photography 101 - foreground and background.

So this is what you get when you combine worldwide love for coffee and amateur photography.

Yes, maybe the next shot trend should be dive watches in a large glass of water, about as deep as they'll ever go, next to a cup of coffee #lifestyle

·

Because it's relatable, most here will drink coffee. A coffee is often thought of a time to take a momment so in that regard it makes sense.

·

Give it a couple of years, when the recession kicks in , there'll be photos of Submariners with barely legible handwritten For Sale tags, next to a few scraps of crystal meth.

·

No idea. I don't drink coffee. Tea yes, coffee no.

·

As a person who’s into coffee brewing and has a Brew watch - it’s hard for me to comment without too much without prejudice 🙃

Coffee: the second largest traded commodity in the world, behind oil.

Caffeine: the most consumed legal performance enhancing drug in the world.

So maybe watch collecting is not the only hobby that overlaps with coffee.

But then there’s the historical and redundant but awesome coffee machines! What’s not to love! They’re shiny, with knobs and levers and….DIALS!!! And shoot out steam and make great noises! So Steam Punk, so mechanical! I love watches and I love coffee!

You beat me to the punch. Many of us reach for both watches (and watch content) and coffee for comfort. Picking out my watch for the day and pouring a good cup of coffee are two comforting moments to most of my mornings. As much as we talk about all the different parts of watches, brands, specs, and this hobby, I think comfort and escapism are a significant piece of it for the majority of us. I could be very far off in generalizing to the larger group, but when I talk to watch people in person, there is almost always a romantic comfort in the tone of the discussion.

Alcohol and watches? Never thought of that! Yes, I they do appear together quite often. I watch the Effing time guys as well, they live in a magic kingdom of luxury watches and life, so best we not compare.

Well, kudos on being sober, quitting an addiction is something few are able to accomplish 👏

You should #treatyoself to a nice decaf latte or americano my friend. Indulge a little as is safe ️!

I just buy more watches !!!
