Real thoughts

I joined this site because it said no matter the watch with no judgement this is the place to be. Been here for a little while just over a week or so but noticed its still the usual high end watches (even what I or most will considered at entry level is still way more than I or the average consumer can ever affored. I have what I consider as a really really modest collection at the low end of the scale (but still some fantastic watches in the bottom end of the price bracket) I collect what I like & what makes me feel good & unfortunately Richard Mille, Jacob & Co Audemars Piguet £50000+ watches doesn't do that for me. I would personally have 20 Casio a few Timex and some other (classed as low end brands) with amazing standings... In my collection over some of the super inflated brands just because it's apparently cool to have one of these because they can be worth a small fortune only because of exclusivity. I say fuck them all & I will stick to my low end well made watches as I can without doubt never be able to afford (unfortunately) one of these watches but it doest stop me collecting what I have & I will continue to collect what I like regardless of it top end value.... Buy what you like & wear what makes you feel good regardless of value because if your love your Casio F91W & you wear it with absolute pride nothing will even come close in sentiment value & thats a fact

For sure there are some aspirational pieces here, but there is an equal if not greater enthusiasm and appreciation for Seiko and Casio/Timex. In fact, this community has given me greater appreciation for some of my watches that have fallen out of rotation like my F91w and Seiko5 SNK805.

Personally, my grail watch is a Speedy but have nothing in my collection over $800 cause 1)can’t afford it and 2)wouldn’t be able to live with myself if I dinged up a really nice watch.

Keep doing what you’re doing. 🍻

In a group like this there are going to be a lot of people from different backgrounds, with different financial situations, who can buy different watches. There are some amazing, and expensive watches posted here, but there are also a huge number of affordable watches ranging from F91-Ws to Citizen Promasters posted/discussed daily.

The thing that I have found that sets this place apart from most others, is that people generally don't bash/trash talk other people's watches here. Occasionally you'll see it, but it's usually people bashing expensive watches, not people with expensive watches bashing those with affordable ones.

Wear what you like, post what you like, and mute those who annoy you. 🍻

·

There are better discussions in the shallow end of the pool.

Modesty is the norm here and the majority rock the modestly to bargain priced watches. The high end watch owners do not flaunt their stuff but are rightfully proud of them. The mods here make sure there is peace in the valley which is lacking in other forums. Post some pic's of your watches with some scenic background. But don't forget to shave your arm for the shot 😉

Expertly said, Kristian. To expand on your points, I’ve noticed Crunchers with “aspirational” pieces still totally going nutters over a Casio, Timex, Seiko…the like. Remember: judgement travels both directions but for the most part, this is a great community of genuine watch enthusiasts & supporters 🤙❤️🤙

So far I've liked what I've seen and read. It's fun. Plus the amount of Casio F91's, Duro's, and the like on the #WRUW is as much if not more than other stuff.

I have nothing against high end brands, if I own one in the future all right. But if don't, also all right. I have probably what most "cool-ectors" in the mainstream would say is a massive amount of cheap stuff..."save your money and buy a grail....."

Pshhh I like watches, even if I had 4 Rolly's, and a whole stable of issued stuff (my personal preference), I'd still own Timex's, Casio's, Helm and even some *gosh* homage brands.

Collect what you like, and Use Your Tools!

PS - One of these days, I might even post some picture rocking a higher end "luxury" tool watch in the field doing some demo/FTX work. (Mainly to cause hernias, mayhem, and brain aneurysms for the high falutin crowd on the #Instas.....😁🤘🏻😜😈...no one in here since it's generally a pretty chill crowd.)

·

Interesting.....but welcome, it doesnt matter what end of the pool you are in...enjoy the hobby...

·

Buy what you want and wear what you want. I agree! I have no high end luxury watches in my collection. Maybe when I hit 90 I'll buy that Rolex lol and die with it on my wrist, not lol. I'll take my Zelos.

Enjoy those watches!

Cheers!

·

I’m with you. Been on the site a short time as well. Unfortunately, I had a run in with someone today that put a bad taste in my mouth about the site. Overall, I think most people are like you on here. We just love watches.

·

Some high end watches are dog-ass ugly. My opinion of course. I'm looking at you RM.

·

Small world Wayne 😀 Welcome to the Crunch!

Use the "Latest" tab on the front page and you will often see lesser discussed topics / brands that don't garner enough responses to make to the front. Still some interesting comments though. Also search using the hashtag keywords for brands you are particularly interested in.

Also, 100% agree with Aurelian. A lot of the high end discussions are repetitive, read one and you more or less read them all.

·

I don't see it that way at all. Maybe because I don't read topics on most high end watches. Almost all Tudor, Rolex, AP, PP, Breitling don't do anything for me so I skip those. I enjoy VC, ALS, Breguet and other with exceptional dials so I do read them.

I also tend not to post anything that's into four figures. I have some, but I find more interesting conversations at the lower end.

·

People that belittle or resent others for being happy have simply forgotten how it feels. Share your happiness with them so they remember.

·

So what are we allowed to talk about?

Edit - you’ve not been on here long, so I would assume this critique takes into account mostly recent content. I would advocate for the following:

  • Curate your own topics and people to follow who you enjoy, and that way your “Following” feed is very much tailored to your interests

  • Read the weekly Bites newsletter - you’ll see who offers interesting content rather than “look at my shiny shiny”

  • Don’t rely on the algorithm (it’s f*cked - the site knows this, but it’s not being fixed). Deep dive for things you like.

  • Save posts you like, you’ll never find them again easily a week down the line.

  • Mute people - seriously, if you can’t stand seeing the posts from people who only post high end you can mute them and your feed will become much more palatable. You can unmute them again if you wish, but at least short term you won’t be bludgeoned by whatever is upsetting you.

·

I joined few days ago and when creating my account the app asked me what kind of watches I’m usually interested in. I think it’s partly thanks to this but I havent encountered a single posh or expensive watch post yet! My timeline is filled mostly with posts about vintage seikos, microbrands and other such discussions which is exactly what I came here for.

Cheers!

·

I get just as much love as anyone else here with my Seikos Casios as well as my Smiths & my most expensive watch a Tudor , so I class myself as a modest collector, mind you why would you be intimidated by people who can buy nice watches and proudly display them ( Shout out to you my fellow cruncher Jae , love looking at your beautiful watches) And most people here with great watches still love & like plenty of casios etc on this site including my humble collection. Negative thinking 🤔 isn’t good for you …… Just enjoy the show …….

While I agree that posts, wrist shots and reviews on this site predominantly focus on high horology, the users on here in general are not as judgemental and snobbish as on most other watch-related forums. I think you're not doing the majority justice by simply generalising all of them. There are always the usual "black sheep", but for the most part, WatchCrunch is a really nice and supportive community!

I suppose one could ask you to define “black sheep”, but it’s subjective at the end of the day. I’m a pariah on here, but not for my dalliances with high horology, let me tell you.

There are plenty of us with a lot to say who sit slightly leftfield, it just depends if you (a) can find us, and (b) want to engage.

Well, hence the quotation marks. 😉 Generally speaking, I've yet to find a pretentious user on this platform. The resonance I received for my questions/polls/photos has been overwhelmingly positive and supportive - despite my collection being mostly homages and entry-level timepieces!

I joined for the same reason as you. People who love watches and appreciate them, regardless of price. It's like food. You don't (and shouldn't) eat only high end steak for every meal. Gets boring af and it's expensive. McDonald's once in a while is fine and tastes amazing.. I'll never not eat pizza, hot wings, or some other dive bar food no matter how wealthy I'll get in the future!

I love my nomos, I love my simple black swatch and I love my Lange and newly acquired love, my first VC. It's not all about the brand (except Lange, I'm an over the top fan boy, I unashamedly admit!), It's about the design, style, mood, and the mechanics too.

Define entry-level… I know some people whose first foray was IWC, Breitling or Omega. I got my father into watches properly via a gifted Rolex. Mine was vintage Omega.

If you were brave then you can get immense bang for your buck in vintage, but it’s very much risk vs reward, so it’s all relative. There is no right or wrong way to ”watch” as I always say.

I totally agree with you. Some members are fake as some of those fake luxury watches. There's no way of escaping people like that. I treat it as white noise in the background and learned how how to ignore them.

Enjoy that watch!

Chee!

I see. Well, MY definition of entry level would be Seiko, Orient, Citizen, homage brands like Pagani Design, etc. Entry- to mid-tier would be stuff like Tissot or Bulova. I totally get your point though; I was once in a Hifi group on FB called "Audiophiles on a budget", where people posted anything from beaten up, vintage Grundig stereos to Burmester amps or Nakamichi Dragon cassette decks. The perception of what is considered "cheap" or "budget" can be quite different from person to person!

Don't let other people's choices define what you like.

I probably do have about 20 Casios from an F91W to a Lineage, and a few cheap Timex pieces, all of which I love and they bring me pleasure in wearing and showing them

Here for your delectation is today's choice (and it's not even a G-Shock.
