Upgrade from Sinn 356 to Speedmaster Reduced?

Hi WC!

I wanted to ask this question as I’m reflecting on a potential upgrade to my collection. The upgrade is:

  • Sell my 2 year old Sinn 356 SA

  • Buy a birth-year Speedmaster Reduced

  • Not lose money, potentially save.

Do I need to? No. Do I want to? Maybe. It sounds like a fun collecting project and I don’t want to spend new money for a watch.

What are you thoughts?

If you want to, go for it, but I'm not sure I'd consider that an "upgrade" really, it's just a different, also good, watch.

·

As an Omega fan I would say go for it. However, in this case I'd keep the Sinn. It looks a lot nicer (imo) and more refined, and is definitely the more unique piece of the two. Every monkey knows Omega but wearing a fine piece of German craftsmanship makes you stand out! 😉

·

It sounds like an experiment and experience worth trying and you could probably reverse it at only a modest cost, if any.

·

Keep it, it is a beauty on its own

·

I would keep the Sinn its amazing 😍

·

Keep the Sinn! I think it’s a better looking watch of the two.

·

Agree. Keep the Sinn. Such a beautiful watch. I personally think it looks better than the speedy

·

I would sell the Sinn and go for a birth year Speedy and try not to “pay” out of pocket. It is challenging and fun in watch collecting. Go for it

If you can afford it, I would say buy the Speedy first, then decide which one to get rid of.

The speedy reduced is a different beast from the standard speedy. Personally, I think the Sinn is nicer and I don't like that the crown and pushers on the speedy reduced don't align horizontally when looking at the side view. But that's my OCD!

If you have both at the same time you'll really be able to tell which you like better.

I agree. The speedy 3523.80 is a reduced case size but has a proper chronograph movement (not a module) so the pushers line up. Even then I’d keep the Sinn. There’s no way I would swap a Sinn for a reduced. For a sandwich dial speedy 57? Yes.

Yes, I've seen the 3523.80 and similar. They use Valjoux movements? In any case, they don't have the classic layout which I think detracts a bit from what some people look for in a speedy?

IMHO the perfect speedy is the 1957 Trilogy edition (38.5mm), but it's also at a premium cost:

This is a tough call! The Speedy has instant recognizability and a much broader mass-appeal, and the cache of wearing an Omega, if that's your thing. Plus I guess the whole birthyear thing is cool if that appeals to you (not really a thing I'd let guide my decision, but to each their own).

On the other hand, the Sinn is a true enthusiast's watch. Few will recognize it on your wrist but that's half the fun, IMHO. I'm not crazy about day-date complications but I think the 12-9-6 sub-dial arrangement makes this a more visually interesting dial (despite my usual gripes about symmetry). I love the chunky "FLIEGER" text under the day-date as well.

[Edit: the Sinn/day-date/Flieger framing really makes the day-date more visually appealing instead of it being a wide skinny intrusion into the dial, and almost acts as a fourth sub-dial, actually increasing symmetry somehow.]

And I like how it's all dial without a bezel separating dial from wrist (and I'd personally never use the tachy).

Both are great pieces and if you could indeed keep both, that might be fun. Barring that, personally I'd keep the Sinn. But you really can't go wrong.

·

You guys gushing all over my Sinn is making feel all funny inside lol Sounds like the sensible thing to do is keep this more novel piece (the Sinn) in the collection. I wish I could keep two at the same time and decide later though. Depends on the cost of the Speedy..

I’m still debating but please keep throwing in your opinions!

I had a reduced - the automatic - and I passed it on as I wished d got the full size one. I then fell into the Sinn hole…..😬

so you never replaced/upgraded it and kept all of your Sinn watches? What do you have that scratches the Speedmaster itch?

·

I’d keep the Sinn myself it’s a cool, unique watch and relatively new. The older Speedy is cool too but it seems everyone has one, plus you may incur more maintenance costs. It’s like a box of chocolates- you don’t know what you’re going to get.

·

If the change is because you want the moonwatch but would compensate with reduced I would say no. Same goes if you just want to switch to Omega as more known brand. If you really prefer reduced compared to Sinn go for it. Both are great watches and you will not go wrong with any of them, purely design decision.

·

The Reduced is an amazing watch. Would say worth the try!

The reduced put me off having one altogether sadly. I’ve tried a full size on a few times and whilst it’s a beautiful thing I’ve not got the itch… the money I got back bought my first Sinn (857 UTC VFR - the orange one) and then my U1 on a factory visit last summer - still don’t want a Speedy……

Ugh, both beautiful watches! That's quite the bang for your buck if you just simply wouldn't connect with the reduced. Thanks for your objective feedback, gives me something to think about. The love I'm getting for this Sinn is making me second-guess this venture lol

·

More of a sidegrade than an upgrade. But sure, why not?

·

In this case the Sinn is a cooler watch. What if they both sed Omega on the dial? What watch would you choose?

I’d keep the Sinn and save for a full size Speedy.

Go for it!

I prefer your Sinn. Both are excellent watches. If you’ve owned for a while I’d keep and it will get more special. Personally I would only buy a watch if I really really wanted it. Not as an experiment!!
