Does this example of Hulk hoarding make you green with envy or rage?

·

Neither, really. Haven't lost much in the stock market, real estate appreciated nicely. As far as the watch is concerned, I'm with Kermit the Frog. ("It isn't easy being green.")

·

Mad? No

Annoyed? A trifle.

Much bigger actual problems in the world I save my outrage for.

That watch is fugly. 😆

·

Wait till you see his Daytona collection…booorrringgg. What bugs me is the attention this is getting. There are loads of grey dealers with more Hulks in their safes than this, so who cares?

·

Well, this is a true collector, I guess. Whether some guy wears his Rollie(s) is irrelevant to me. They aren't great art to be shared with the world, which is how I feel about many, many things.

I do hope this ends as a cautionary tale though. The auction timing may not be the best.

·

I could not care less. Someone likes green Rolexes and buys/sells them. Have fun. I have no interest in them myself. Years ago I went to a doctor who wore a Kermit Rolex...my thought was that having money does not mean that you have taste. But, with how he moved it was clear he wore it because he wanted people to look at it and the green did grab attention.

Look up "nouveau riche"

·

I’m lucky that I can make money at things that I’m good at, so I‘m a poor judge here, but watch flipping for money seems weird to me and that’s way too much green.

·

We may hate this but this is a true "collection". This guy bought one for every year of production. He collected Rolex Hulks. Do I find that boring? Yes. Does he, probably not. Some people out there collect Speedmasters, and then there are some people who only collect Speedmaster Professionals (there is a difference between pro and non pro).

People buy limited edition comic books, action figures and Legos and never open them up. We don't say that's a problem.

·

OK, this dude buying a Hulk each year deprived another dudes of buying these watches.

Bottom line :

  • a happy Rolex customer who's going to make some money (*) selling his green watches and may get blacklisted by his AD
  • some frustrated guys who would still pay over retail for any Rolex timepiece, and
  • myself not planning to buy a Rolex, new or preowned.

Everything is right.

I mean, ten years of holding ain't flipping. In the watch world, that's practically Warren Buffet-esque.  Hell this guy was collecting them when they were actually unpopular!

This is a true blue (green?) collector of a nice but definitely overpriced at market watch.

He might be an overly cautious ninny for not wearing them but that's more his loss than mine.

·

It doesn’t move my emotional needle one way or another. If he’s having fun, great.

Good points - generally, I'm on board with whatever floats your boat, especially with watches, as long as no one gets hurt. I think the point the author is trying to make is that he only bought them to flip, and that "hurt" other potential buyers who would have worn them.

Rolex designs are mostly unappealing to me, but I do like a green watch, and you might say Rolex started a green wave with this.  Still, without interviewing the owner, it's a tough call as to whether he was collecting or investing (or both)...  It's also not clear that anyone was hurt by this, at least not enough to justifying a tar and feathering...

·

I could not care less about Rolex, however, I blame Rolex for creating the situation.  The way they limit supply enables all this.  Mercedes-Benz was doing the same thing during the 70's and 80's but then got smart and opened up supply which immediately cut off the secondary market flippers.

Guys...  I buy comic books, and put them into mylar sleeves with acid-free cardboard backing...  and I don't ever open them to read them, because I have Marvel Unlimited on my iPad!!!

Do you also use a clock app on your iPad to tell the time, possibly with a nice Nato strap and some fava beans?

Wow, that author is damn bitter!

I mean, isn't collecting actually just hoarding in disguise? 🤣 And what difference does it make what the collector does with the watches after they've been purchased? He's free to wear, share, hide, sell, or toss them out if he so pleases.

Clickbaity titles like "This is the worst thing in the watch world ever" are, in my opinion, way worse.

The watch writer speaks truth!

I really wanted a Hulk till I saw it in person.  The love affair instantly ended. Exact opposite occurred when I saw the Pepsi and Batman, both on jubilee.
