If you had to choose

Watch friends, love to get your take on this. I've got two of my most desired pieces from a brand I've grown to love, however, after owning them both for some time, I've realised I'm not really a luxury watch guy if that makes sense... as in I'd wear a luxury piece like this on a nice occasion but wouldn't wear either as a daily and just question if it makes sense to own both. Perhaps this resonates with some of you?

I'm leaning towards letting one go so someone else can enjoy the piece, I'm not really a dressy watch guy but this is probably the piece i'd wear to a wedding, a nice dinner or event but not sure if the kiku is a little too loud for me, it can sometimes act as a chandelier, on the other hand the fit and size is perfect vs. the Suwa which wears larger... so in actuality they probably share the same presence... this is for sure a first world problem but would be keen to get some GS fans opinions on this!

Thanks in advance!

Oh man tough choice! At fist glance I’ll keep the SLGA007 but I love the Gmt too…But I were you I would keep the blue just simply because I Love blue…

·

That blue dial is the one to keep! I’d love that myself, but the most I can go for is one of the low end quartz GS And that’s gonna take some saving.

·

They are both gorgeous but I would too keep the Blue one. I think it would be because of the Spring drive that really makes it special while an Automatic GMT you can get from all kinds of Brands. Maybe not finished to a degree the GS is but maybe at a price that makes you more comfortable wearing it daily.

·

The blue is gorgeous, the GMT not so much... IMO 😉

·

If it were me, I’d easily keep the alga 007.  Prefer the dial and the spring drive movement.

Ohh man I‘m eyeing this lately for the price!! I was debating to get this or go with the Seiko Persage Shippo enamel …

Spring drive all day.

·

I love the case profile on the gmt but the Minamo's dial takes it for me

·

Both are really nice, I like the functionality of the GMT and the dial is really nice. BUT, that lake dial, coupled with the spring drive, it just makes me feel like sploosh, I love it so much I'd probably pay to just wear it for an afternoon.

·

Ouch, that’s tough. I’d actually go with the GMT. The blue is beautiful no doubt, but something about that silver dial…

Gorgeous, I am smitten with this:

I‘d go blue. Just as an FYI, I do use my GS bracelets watches as daily wears. They hold up well, but it has to be something you like to do.

Guess the phone camera (I presume), over-sharpened the images. I'd go for the silver/white/dirty white dial. Looks classy!

·

The GMT is very 😐
While the blue is 🤩

Writing the brand initials all over the dial like that comes across as a bit self-indulgent. Not very classy.

In your position I might sell both, and get a smaller dressier piece, for those special occasions. (Selling the SLGA007 would probably hurt.)

·

Lovely watches but the blue dial edges it for me.

·

I'd say keep the blue dial and sell me the GMT. No one else seems to want the GMT on this thread 😉

·

I love the GMT function. Have a few. I find it to be the one complication that i actually use, and i wear it daily in my work. But not when I’m traveling or out and about - then its a simple beater watch. Like a G-shock or a cheap diver.

Nevertheless, keep the one that makes you happy. And buy a fun daily driver with a beater as a back up. The options are almost endless so take your time and enjoy the hunt! 😉

These are great pieces, I had eyed up both once upon a time... including the Sakura which can keep me up at night.

Selling either would hurt but doesn't make sense to hold both! blue is my fave colour after all.

I'm going to suggest something absolutely heretical here:  Sell both of them.

  • The fact that you're undecided between which of the two to move on from indicates that both are on the cusp
  • You're not a luxury watch kinda guy, and both are clearly luxury watches
  • Both are highly sought after, but from your own description - "I've got two of my most desired pieces from a brand I've grown to love, however..." - it sounds as though one of the reasons you may be holding on to them is simply because they're so highly desired.  That's no way to live!  I used to date this gal in New York, who was perhaps the most comely female I'd ever / will ever set eyes upon.  Everywhere we went, heads turned.  Yet, I found that I always wanted to tear my own ears off every time she opened her mouth!  So, what others find desirable is not always what we ourselves want in life, yeah?

If you sell both, someone else will certainly immediately move to purchase, they will get to enjoy, and you will have a wad of cash with which to then pursue watches that better fit your preferences.  Win-win!

May I suggest any of the following, which may better suit your "non-luxury-watch-guy" lifestyle...

Automatic GMT SBGM245
Grand Seiko SBGN005 quartz GMT, blue dial, stainless steel case, men's watches
Grand Seiko SBGE257 Spring Drive GMT green dial stainless steel ceramic men's watches

Amongst the lot above, it would be a tough call between the SBGN005 and the SBGE257.  The former is thinner and sports a comfortable 39mm diameter, and is quartz, so is tougher.  The SBGE257, meanwhile, is thicker, but has spring drive, and that smooth sweeping seconds hand is soooooo satisfying.

In the meantime, sir, my condolences that you must deal with this truly crushing first world problem.

I've got to say, massive fan of your writing and suggestions here! definitely food for thought as a spring drive GMT would be the nuts.

I agree with @HotWatchChick69. Sell both.

The way you talk about them just comes across as you feeling a bit 'meh' about both. It's like you have lusted after them, realise how special they are to many people, and so just feel kinda compelled to keep one. I'm not really sensing any passion for either.

You need to find a dress watch you look at like Turmond looks at Brienne.

Image

Haha i actually love these two, they're really my two favourite pieces even when up against any other brand. I know what you mean about the chase and how it can be unsatisfying when finally come to owning them, but I don't feel this way.

I'll have to see what else is out there that could potentially dethrone either in that case!

Chris that GMT is probably my favorite GS that I have never personally seen. The closest I have come is the SBGJ249, so I can understand your chandelier comment, though I was in a very brightly lit WOS. But I went from thinking i "had to have it" to " I don;t think I could live with this" ---- aybe you should think about something more subdued...but perhaps I'd hold onto that GMT a while longer...I'd hate for you to have sellers remorse

Image

This is exactly how I feel... if i let it go I probably won't get it back. The 249 is a beaut but the dial on the kiku is probably the nicest dial seen on a watch but it's not the complete package, the suwa on the other hand is the closest to a complete package... for me. It's just the sellers remorse!

Don't disagree with this observation. But there's no down side to moving more slowly, keeping one of the two for now then take a wait and see approach with it. I'm sure your collection will continue to evolve, and you'll continue to learn more about yourself as you go along. No upside to making drastic changes that you'll regret.

To answer your question though, I'd agree with the popular opinion here and go with the suwa for two reasons:

  • It's the less dressy of the two. If anything its size makes it a bit more sporty. Most people not in the know probably wouldn't even identify it as a luxury watch. It's just a seiko right?
  • The evolution series is such a breath of fresh air in the watch world. While most brands are busy pay tribute to the past and honoring design "traditions", the evolution series feels very forward looking, both in terms of the movement (5 days SD are you kidding me?) technology and case design. It is a bold move to go with a 22mm lug width for example, probably against convention wisedom. But it's a design decision that yields better stability on the wrist. I don't find it unweildy at all since there's still a good amt of taper. GS is taking the lead and saying to the rest of the world, "get on my level".

Fully agree with you here, especially the evolution series being a front runner of modern day watches. I do love the brushing and the flat bezel... something so sporty and elegant about the watch. Who knows where my tastes are in 5 years, it may very well be different, could even be a 40+ Panerai!

All very sober-minded and good advice...  except...  OP, do you want to do this all your life...

Mr Bean Waiting GIF - Mr Bean Waiting Still Waiting - Discover & Share GIFs

...  or would you be happier if you grabbed your fate by the reins, sold whatever doesn't really excite you, and go out and discover the watch you really love, and say to it...

Life Is Short And You Are Hot - Short GIF - Lifeisshort Hot Youarehot - Discover & Share GIFs
  • If you got both watches at MSRP, you will make a very tidy profit on the sale
  • If you didn't get both watches at MSRP, and instead paid market price, you obviously have enough money that it doesn't matter one way or the other whether you make a few dollars here or lose a few dollars there
  • Unless you're one of these live fast, die young types, who suffers from hyperbolic discounting, my guess is that you probably work hard, save up money, live responsibly, don't drink or use drugs to excess, max out your 401k, etc., etc.  And, one day, you're going to end up with too damn much money in your retirement account.  And you'll be old, like me, and you'll say to yourself, "Why the hell didn't I just spend a few bucks and enjoy my life?  I can't take this cash with me where I'm going!"

So, obligatory...

Haha love this. Time to make those dreams come true!

·

You should keep the Lake Suwa and give the Kiku to me :)

·

Lake Suwa my friend. Looks so unique and beautiful at the same time

·

I would say KEEP BOTH. And it seems to me that you can afford to keep both. If you really love both watches, why let any of them go? Its not about logically ”I only need one because I am not a dressy kinda guy”. This hobby is not about need, this hobby is more emotion than logic. Why the hell do any of us NEED so many watches in the first place? 🤣

Haha I’ve just read your message. You’re very right on this. It is emotion based… with smart phones these days no one needs a watch!

·

Which did you end up keeping?
