GQ Article's Hot Take: "Why True Watch Heads Never Set the Time on Their Watches"

First off, cannot take credit for finding this article. Another member of a Facebook watch group I'm a part of (AWWC) brought it to my attention.

But anyway, discuss....

Even after reading it again, I'm still like Bob here, key word to me is "never" and "true"...

Yup. I'm still trying to figure out why 😂.

Not even gonna bother giving it a click.

What tripe.

When you’re rich and keep hours like Bruce Wayne, it doesn’t matter what time it is 🤣

·

Let me guess, true watch heads only buy watches with resale value and G-Shock for blending in with the poors. True watch heads only buy Nautilus, RO, and Rolexs.

·

I never want to be a true watch head.

·

Next article will be about "athletes who never exercise".

·

I rotate and set time and date each time I choose a watch to wear. I just don't know another way.

·

Madness. 😂

What tripe.

Sadly, I did. And it made me cringe. 😂

[I reached out to O’Dell looking for counterarguments, assuming he would be a hard-nosed purist. But he, too, admitted that he rarely sets his watches. In fact, he goes one step further: “Most of my watches are manual wind and I don’t even wind them 70% of the time,”]

Interesting 🤨

They're not watch enthusiasts they're jewelry enthusiasts!! 🤯

There was an article or two in some lost motorcycle e-zine that have been lost to time which I wish I'd saved. One was about "bike-shaped objects" and lamented all the seemingly permanently parked motorcycles he saw. Actually there may have been a third article about the "virgin cult" that refused to let things be used as intended in some perverse attempt at preservation.

Anyway, I find all this anathema. The function of a watch is to tell time. If it's not doing that, it... wait a minute...

This dummy sums it up starting about 30 seconds in with the real gist from around 1:20 to 1:50

Click bait article gets clicks...

I always assumed GQ was a bit better than this Buzzfeed style of article, but I have also only ever read a few dozen GQ articles/editions in my life.

I realize this stuff generates clicks, but how many people does it drive away after reading the stupidity? After seeing this silliness I'm less likely to click on a GQ article in the future.

·

I agree! As a true motorcycle-head, I only ever ride backwards and upside down. What sort of car enthusiast actually drives their car? They hire people to push it, because actually using functional things is for nerds!

I'm not even going to click that link. My brain has rotted enough for the day.

·

Indeed, one of the main criteria for something being part of a collection is removing it from normal use. Few think they have a collection of socks and underwear.

How enthusiasts wear watches to me is irrelevant. If you wanna go all Andy Warhol be my guest.

The attitude, word choice, poor journalism and mindset are more annoying/bothersome to me.

Absolutely agree with you, that's what a lot of people said. Some people are completely disconnected from the real world... And they pretend to be a reference in the horlogical world, what a shame...

I am a function first guy. If the watch doesn't work, Iw wont wear it.

You're a watch, you had one job!

·

Am I not a true "Watch Head"? I always set the correct time and date. Is it my OCD? Or is it that I love interacting with my watches as much as I love wearing them?

·

Thanks for sharing - very interesting. I can totally see the point here for a vintage manual winding watch. But beyond that, it’s a big NOPE for me. I’m way too OCD to have the wrong time on my wrist.

Plus I love to spend time with my watch in the morning. It’s part of my ritual, choose a watch, chose a strap (if I have time), then set the time, date, month, moonphase (if it has one), and put it on my wrist.

Dates on watches are for poor people 😂 day and date complications on ALS is so you know when your dividend cheques are meant to enter your bank accounts :)

·

Yesterday I had an article on my news feed 'top watches under £1000' which is definitely where my budget is so obviously I clicked on it, the first watch was a moonswatch so I stopped there.

·

'True watch heads' is enough for me to not click on the article

·

I am such a true watch head that I wear my watches dial side down, so I am never even tempted to set the time.

When they ask you about it you must scoff at them, and say something about peasant or commoner.

And then derisively sniff, and say get away from me plebe. Hahahaha 😂.

Pics will happen after I get off training weeks 😂.

Now it finally makes sense...

it's called a "True" GMT when they don't bother to set the second time zone!

Nah, it's only a true GMT when the gmt hand is set to utc.

This is the only watch opinion that I'm willing to growl 'Fight me!' over with.
