How many hours difference warrants a GMT ⌚?

For many years, I kept track of time zones mentally. Smartphones also were and remain handy. Yet, this shared addiction we have in this community enabled the acquisition of GMT ⌚. Here in the featured photo, Chicago Standard time is set for 20:25 with the GMT hand set for Tokyo at 11:25. Now, at a simple glance it would appear that I am simply tracking a three hour difference, which is a handy mental shortcut. Nonetheless, the ⌚ does not account for local 24 hour time. So, how many hours difference does one need to purchase a GMT ⌚? How do you use your GMT ⌚?

No hour difference necessary for me; I use the GMT hand as an AM/PM indicator.

I work a lot on submarines so that's a super useful feature. The extra benefit is it tells me when the date complication is going to cycle.

I don't even really track anything LOL 🤣 I just like the look 😎

Also, if your watch has a 24 hour bezel, you can set the GMT hand to... well... GMT time, and just dial in the time zone you want pretty fast.

I love asking people who do not wear ⌚ to read the time off a GMT ⌚.

Classic trick.

Interesting and an appropos setting.

I use my GMTs to track Zulu time as a move across time zones. Zulu time is used in aviation, and aviation weather, so when I'm travelling to inspect weather stations it's all done in Zulu.

·

Depends on how good you are at mental math, I suppose 😜

I'm in Vancouver BC Canada ... My true home city is Toronto Ontario Canada. So, I'll set the GMT hand to Eastern Standard Time normally. But, not necessarily required.

·

I use it to specifically think of home, when I'm not there.

And/or know when I need to start wrapping stuff up to make the bedtime singing, prayers, and goodnight kisses via whatever communication line I have on hand.

·

I’ve never had a need for a GMT, and never will even when traveling. Having said that, I’m still going to justify buying a GMT 2 as necessary for when I’m traveling.

·

Really just a matter of convenience to be able to look at the time, 2nd & even 3rd time zone at a flick of the wrist. I use my GMT just to check for the appropriate time to call friends & relatives for a chat in different time zones.

Really don’t have any lives at stake if I spend another 5 seconds pulling out my IPhone to do the same thing. At least not for me anyway.

·

Zero need for one .

They're just the current fad.

Only a matter of time before we see an integrated bracelet GMT in Tiffany blue (if there's not one already) from China or a microbrand 🤣🤣

·

I just do the calculation in my head. Removing 8-10 hours is easy enough.

Fair point.

I work in tech, so I always have to have a GMT watch on so I can keep track of when team America wakes up

·

Option D because I only track time zones with a 24 hour time difference

·

I don’t even travel, I just use mine as a 24hr local time 😂

·

My daughter currently lives 6 hours ahead of me. An easy calculation, but when I’m wearing it the GMT reminds me not to call her too late.

·

More than +/-6 hrs IMO.

·

One of the original uses of GMT was also for people in dark locations at extended periods of times to know if it’s day or night. That’s part of its marketing for the Explorer 2 as an example

·

I see the 4/20 effect has crept into polls today. Still high?

·

It's handy if you need to read logs from a server because all timestamps are done in GMT

·

I have found certain time zones are harder than others.

For example, a 12 hour difference like China EST is easy to track because you just flip AM/PM.

Adding +/- 3 hours isnt bad either. I have internalized the time zones in my country (Pacific/Mountain/Central/Eastern)

Or certain time differences have mnemonics, like lunchtime (noon) starts in China at 9 PM in San Francisco standard time.

But, Daylight Saving time messes with things already. If you are in the office at 8am working late in Korea (China +1) in May, are your colleagues in SF in the office yet?

Being jet lagged is the other thing. You wake up after passing out at 7pm in an airplane/hotel. You want to acclimate to the next zone. Should you go back to sleep? If I have to do math, Im gonna be awake.

Lastly, I think people who use a 24 hour clock routinely have an easier time soth zones. People in the US use 12 hour clocks and that makes coversion more treacherous. similar Celsius/Farenheit, even if you know the conversion, it is difficult to get an intuitive feel in another system.

Also, the gmt hand makes using the watch as a solar compass really easy

I am living between USA, Sri Lanka and Italy. USA and SL is a 12.5 hour difference = easy switch day for night in my mind. SL to Italy is a trick because its 3:30 hours ahead, I have to tweak the bezel by 1 click. USA Pacific to Italy is an even 9, so no offset bezel.

I have the BB diet Pepsi GMT (true gmt) and it comes in handiest when landing in Dubai or any stop over when you can just adjust the hour hand and be in the correct time instantly, while keeping home time

·

I like to set my GMT time to the next travel destination so when I look it reminds me of my upcoming vacations

·

Not having one warrents a GMT. 🙃

·

I work a 12 hour shift, so I have one of them set up to have the GMT hand at the start of the red when shift starts, so the farther it is into the red, the less time I have left in this hellhole.

A snapping hour hand is usually all I need. However those often only come as GMTs

Glashütte Original has a minute hand that adjusts in one minute increments on its flyback chronograph.

Similar concept and more accurate.
