Which watch disappointed you?

Have you ever been disappointed in a new watch? Bought a watch that you were all excited about, but when you got it on your wrist, were turned off by it? I'm not talking about the buying experience, just the watch.

Mine was this Jughans Max Bill Chronoscope that I bought a few years ago. I was so excited to get it out of the box and on my wrist. For the first time, I saw it in the metal and up close. Ugh! The pictures hadn't shown the fine detail in the textured finish of the silver-while dial. There was a grainy finish, which I found extremely ugly, I still don't know why. I tried to convince myself I'd get used to it, even like it, in time. I gave it until the next morning, then boxed it up and sent it back for a refund (thank God for that.)

So, what was yours?

Yes probably quite a few but the only one that I can think of off the top of my head is the San Martin Original Design NH34 GMT Watch SN0116. It's actually a great watch. It's very well made and looks great in pictures. It looks great in the watch box just not on my arm. I don't like bracelets and it doesn't work with a strap IMO. I'm keeping it and may pass it on at some point or my opinion may change in the future 🤷

Tissot PRX for me. I had been on the fence for months then finally pulled the trigger. I put it and found it uncomfortable to wear. I returned it the same day I got it.

·

Eberhard Chrono 4 for me. Perhaps it is because the first one was sent back. It got exchanged buy the foul taste lingers.

Aragon Sea Striker.

A few. This Rado Voyager for one. It's waiting to be listed on eBay.

I actually think it looks awesome on you 😅

Jk I love this ugly watch. It’s my ugly duckling.

For me it was the Hamilton Khaki Field Automatic. I love the look and build of the watch, but the lack of AR coating made it impossible for me to read outside. To be fair it was the middle of summer, but still haven't been able to get myself to buy a black dial Khaki again.

Such a shame, would love to get one. I know I can get an after market crystal for it, however doesn't feel right to mod a watch this price 🙈

Happened twice with different Tudor model.

The Ranger I just found boring. The ‘less is more’ didn’t quite work for me. And also with the Pelagos 39. Was very excited when it was announced. Loved all of the little touches and details in theory e.g. 39mm/ sunburst dial and ghost bezel etc. Got the call from the AD and was just extremely underwhelmed.

On the flip side, I had no interest in the BB54 until I actually tried it on. Now I want one..

Oh yes.

My SPB147 is responsible for the shortest honeymoon I ever had with a watch.

I find that most watches I’ve bought online or on a whim and not tried on beforehand usually disappoints. Then it’s a question of whether or not the watch grows on you.

A watch that I purchased and was disappointed by was the SKX for me. An icon but just not for me.

I will agree about the chronoscope though…I was infatuated with it for years and then I saw it in person last year and the silver dial really caught me off guard. It’s made it off my short list since.

Hoping it grows up soon?

The Electricianz Cable Z was a big disappointment. And 45mm was too big and dial was less than half that and hard to read with barely any markers

·

Explorer 1, both 36 and 39 mm.... never sold watches as quickly as those 2

·

Every Hamilton. Had 4, got rid of 4. Lack of AR, Murph was most disappointing.

Worst are Yema Flygraph and Zelos Swordfish - hated them both, won't go near either brand again! (Awful build quality, poor design)

·

For me: most of tissot, all Hamilton, Bulova, Movado, glycine , shinola etc

Why did you buy another after the first one was a disappointment?

Why did you buy a third after the first two were such a disappointment?

Why did you buy a fourth after the first three disappointed you?

Sounds like you just don't like watches. Ever consider collecting pottery instead?🙄

😂 no, I just don't like low quality stuff sold at overinflated prices.

Actually did have a couple of poems published years ago 🤔😂

Can I ask what you didn't like about it? I love the blue dial...and am considering buying one. TIA

Look at my post above to see my reasons. It links to the comment listing my reasons.

It was a "Mystery" sale, which I interpreted as "Introductory" sale. I didn't realize it was code for "We're dumping this turkey".

The spec's were pre-released thusly:

40mm Dive watch (note Aragon is largely regarded as having the best dive watch you can buy for under $150).

It was supposed to be "Aragon Purple" which is a thing. I have an Aragon Purple watch and it's fantastic.

The dial is supposed to be vertically brushed so it will color shift through tints as it's moved. Like a sunburst but only in one plane.

What I received:

So the case is 38mm measured on the back, the bumps on the bezel do stretch it out to 40mm, but.... the dial is 24mm. Yes, 24mm, you can cover the entire dial with your thumb. It's tiny. It's like 30% smaller than a vintage watch from the 50's. It's radius is about 1mm larger than a nickel

The color is pink. Pure flat pink. non-debatable pink. It's not even close to purple. It's pink. On top of that the brushed treatment is missing. It's simply flat pink.

Now for the subjective design issues: It's thick, just shy of 16mm thick. It's thicker than two iPhones stacked together.

The pink chapter ring is plastic that Mattel would be ashamed of, and the chapter marks are spray painted in grey with no embossing. With a 24mm dial, the chapter ring leaps out at you shouting in all it's injection molded shoddiness.

So in brief:

Size = Fail

Color = Fail

Finishing = Fail (missing dial finish)

Material Quality = Fail

Thickness = Fail

General design = Fail, though this is subjective; the bezel is wildly over sized, the dial is tiny beyond belief and proportions across the board are awkward. It's a pink nickel as thick as a Vegas dice.

This was my 7th Aragon purchase (6 for me plus one for my father in law), so I thought I was safe buying an Aragon mystery watch.

I hated it.

I gave it to my sister in law to donate to a lady co-worker who couldn't afford her own watch. Good riddance. I would NEVER wear it and they would not take it back . At least I found a female who might get some use out of it.

Oh man, I am so disappointed to hear this. I have 3 Aragon's, 2 that I love, and 1 that I wasn't paying enough attention to when I bought it to realize it was a quartz. It's an ok looking watch but I am not a fan of Quartz chronos. My disappointment comes from having just popped for the new 2024 Mystery Box 😬. I had the very same thought as you that this would be a new release of some kind and that I had a pretty good chance of liking it. Well I guess I'll gear down any excitement over the thing, and take it as a good sign that I ran across your post.

Aragon makes a lot if really nice watches. Wishing you some luck on the new mystery deal. It could be truly awesome. :-)
