Oystersteel allergy?!

So apparently I have an allergic reaction to oystersteel. 😄2 days ago I purchased one of my dream watches and my first Rolex - a GMT Master 2 on a jubilee, and yesterday I noticed there was a tiny spot on my wrist that got a bit red and was itchy. Today another spot got itchy and a bit red. It’s not severe or anything, but it’s uncomfortable. Especially if the bracelet is sitting tight (so I used the extention).

I googled it and and apparently some people have nickel allergy and as I understood oystersteel is richer in nickel than a regular stainless steel alloy. What a bummer! Has anyone experienced anything similar?

My wife has the same nickel allergy. I didn't know that about oystersteel, though. Are you going to replace the bracelet? Get it rhodium coated? Just deal with it?

·

That is a shame. I’ll take it off your hands if that helps!

·

Seems like a very good excuse to get a rubber strap from the likes of rubberb 😉

·

So what’s your best offer? 😆

·

Sorry this is happening. Ive heard ofnthis before. Could be that you have high histamine levels. Some people say this can help. Maybe try Zyrtech for a few days?

If the watch needs to leave the collection please hit me up.

·

Wow, big bummer.

It’s pretty common actually. Metal allergies happen a lot, especially in jewelry like 925 Sterling. 904 steel is rarer, but not uncommon. Take care of your health first.

Give titanium a look, it’s hypoallergenic. Trade the GMT towards a new Ti Yachtmaster.

I’d maybe try it for a little bit longer and confirm that it is the metal and then consult a physician, maybe your body will adapt or maybe they’ll give you the confidence to move the piece as your health is worth more than wearing a watch.

Sorry again to learn this, best to you and let us know how the journey goes.

I also noticed you have tattoos on your wrist. I find in hot weather, ink can do weird things. I have had rashes that specifically follow lines on my ink in hot weather. While I do believe it’s a nickel allergy, perhaps try wearing on your other wrist (assuming no ink) to see.

Hopefully it will stop leaching out after a short time. If that's how it works.

·

New watch may also mean residue from stickers. Pop off the bracelet and run it through an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner.

Maybe a bund strap

I generally avoid nickel due to the patina finger but have never heard of the nickel content in a steel alloy being enough to cause a reaction. Wouldn't it be better to have higher quality steel?

·

Very sorry to hear that. I worked in healthcare for over 20 years, and yes an allergy to nickel is a thing.

I’m surprised though because Rolex steel is only minutely different in nickel from regular 316L. It’s a great shame to hear about your reaction.

·

Dang. That sucks.

Looks like several options have been suggested here that may give you paths other than giving up your dream. I can't say about a metal allergy but Zyrtec is a miracle drug for allergies. I was prescribed it once after a really bad season put me down hard, and the nurse used the word miracle. She was not wrong! Years later I will change it up between Zyrtec and Claritin if I feel a tolerance building. Also Flonase can be used alongside the above. ALL are available in Wally World (that's WalMart, in case anyone wonders - lol) and Costco OTC for super cheap!

Good luck with your dream watch! Hope you can learn to live together.

I actually haven’t decided yet 🤔probably will 1st need to run a test and confirm it’s i a nickel allergy. Rhodium coating sounds interesting though, I’ll do my research on it! Have you actually tried anything that worked for your wife?

Yeah, but I really love stainless steel bracelets and especially the jubilee 😢I’ve never had anything like this with other stainless steel bracelets though

·

You could always use it as a pocket watch

·

Lanolin cream on wrist before putting on your watch should greatly alleviate this occurrence. Good luck 🤞

That's a great suggestion, well done!

I would recommend you have a doctor take a look at it. Nickle allergy is very common and I would find it hard to believe you would find out just now and not from a belt buckle or something like that much sooner. My friendly advice only :)

Btw nickel allergy it’s common too 🤣🤣 (sorry for the typo)

·

It looks like the bracelet is to tight

·

What a shame! Batman looks perfect on a jubilee. I recon find yourself a good quality rubber band would solve your problem. Have a look at Rubber B, not sure whether they have rubber band for gmt. The quality is top class. Otherwise, any Casio gmt would solve this issue lol!

Wow, that bund strap is beautiful 👍

·

Is it nickel allergy or you wearing the watch too tight because watches on bracelet and watches in general should not be worn tightly. There should be at least half a finger width worth of gap there.

·

my workmate only collects rolex and omega. he is also allergic to the oystersteel. but he says it is just a minor problem in summertime when it is hot and sweaty... he just grabs one of his omegas then if it is too hot.

·

Only from cheep Chinese "jewellery" 😮🙄

Wow ive never seen a gunny strap ..doesnt it get heavy or hot though ?...

·

Now that your skin is in a sensitive state from the allergic reaction, I would recommend wearing no watch for a while until it calms down (could take a few weeks!).

Tight bracelets and sweaty conditions will increase the likelihood of a reaction (the sweat reacting with the bracelet is leeching out the nickel allowing it to react), so better to wear watch looser.

Wear the watch for shorter periods at first and gradually increase wearing time if no problems.

Hopefully that will be enough to get you back wearing it.

If it develops into a problem with multiple watches, titanium watches are indeed a great way to go!

My friend had this allergy and it's actually very unpleasant. If you suspect an allergy, consult a dermatologist. Also, check out Canadian Pharmacy B2B for healthcare needs. They offer a range of products and services that could be helpful.
