That’s supposed to be a watch…

Alright guys. You know how it goes:

The Apple event takes place, they introduce „ground-breaking“ new stuff that literally adds one more line to the feature list on the webpage and they‘ll present a „new“ „watch“ (yes, two separate quotation marks…).

Please, can we stop pretending that this is a watch?

It’s a small computer for your wrist that is bound to distract you, will draw nobody’s attention, can’t be dressed up nor down, is ugly as the blackest of nights, costs as much as a „real watch“ and will be made (theoretically) obsolete in 12 months time.

Maybe I’m wrong and maybe someone wants to hate on that comment but this is, in my humble opinion, atrocious.

Yes, I brought it up and yes, as I’m typing this, I want to banish this „watch“ from this site.

Am I wrong?

This is how I feel about dive watches and chronographs and GMT doodads! Why do they do extra things that make them look uglier?

Haha, I get you.

Divers are a grown man‘s fidget toy though.

Chronos let you time your tea and eggs.

And I actually like my contrasting orange GMT hand 😅 (though I never use it consciously… not even as a compass)

Can someone explain what the "3000 nits" are? A web search thinks this is head lice but I suspect that is possibly unrelated.

While I agree, I wear a Garmin Forerunner 965 because I do a lot of bicycling, walking, and hiking, and I want to track my fitness, activity, and recovery, and based on my months of research, Garmin is the best at this for people who are more serious about their workouts and being able to sync their watch to things like bike power meters, etc.

As a result, I'm wearing a "real" watch on my left wrist and the Garmin on the right, and yes, I feel like a dork for doing so. I wish I could make the Garmnin invisible when I'm not using it. :-)

"Also known as candelas per square meter, a NIT is a unit of measurement for brightness – it’s the standard unit of luminance used to describe various sources of light....Simply put, a NIT is the brightness a viewer’s eye can perceive from a screen."

Full explanation in article bellow.

I'm huge tech fan and I can't deny the many benefits of smart tech. Maybe in the beginning it was all bluff. Crash and fall detection are very useful for many with medical conditions. Fitness if you care about performance and enhancements. The fact you can go for an hour or two run/walk with just your watch is quite useful. So I like the Tech.

THE BAD: I hate the corporate fakeness of being "green" If you want to be green then don't release a watch or phone with such a minimal upgrades we are talking bare MINIMUM. Imagine spending 700 on a watch you can't use in 4 years because of battery degradation or software upgrades that purposely slows down your device to make you buy a new one.

It’s Lice. Should have read the terms and conditions….

Agree with @IceCreamMan , why bother so much if you’re not going to wear it?

  1. A watch is a portable device that tells time and the AppleWatch what it does. You might not like the design or the way it keeps time, but that’s your preference. Digital watches are also small computers on the wrist, do you hate on them as well?

  2. The AppleWatch doesn’t go obsolete in 12 months. While there is a very finite useful lifespan of the watch, it is much more than 12 months, typically 3 to 5 years depending on your use age. A new model with new features are released every year, that’s capitalism and consumerism for you, much like how watch manufacturers come up with new “designs” (mainly design tweaks, colour scheme or materials changes) annually.

You make your choice and let others make theirs. No one is forcing you to get an AppleWatch. There isn’t any need for watch snobbery.

“Small computer for your wrist” is pretty much the definition of a wristwatch.

You don’t have to like ‘em.

Nit comes from the Latin word “nitere” which means to shine. Nits is referring to how bright a screen appears to a human eye. Strange term I know.

This or WhiteBread?

I agree with others in that I wonder why it matters so much.

Nevertheless, in so much as it’s a device you wear on your wrist and it constantly displays the time, I’d argue it is a watch. It uses quartz like any digital watch to regulate time.

Clearly it does much more. But would you make similar arguments about Casio calculator watches from the 80s or other watches that attempted to provide additional features and utility? Are they not watches?

And frankly, I gave up wearing an Apple Watch after years of wearing one, because I got tired of frequent notifications and distractions. Nevertheless, clearly I don’t think I’d go as far to argue that it’s not a watch.

Don’t forget that they leave out the power brick and the headphones.

If you need them, you can buy them separately. In extra packaging, of course ;)

Not only is a classic Apple Watch a Watch, it is the most iconic Watch ever.

Like it or not, but if you have a different opinion you are wrong.

To break it all down what this is an extra feel good distraction on your wrist. Just to tell time alone is never enough we all want extra with time.
