What draws you to military/field/pilot watches?

I like the simplicity and - often - the stark styling. Not to mention aside from blues, I wear a lot of earth tones.

My granddad was a decorated RAF pilot / flight instructor 🫡 and that’s all it took for me to be into military watches.

I love the outdoors and I’m in the military.  Prefer field watches over pilot watches or marine styles because I’m most comfortable on land. I like hiking over flying or swimming. I’m also an Army Soldier, not Navy or Airforce.

·

I was convinced I need a military style watch for traveling to countries that use 24 hr time.

But because of covid I haven't gone overseas in years and I need reading glasses to see the tiny 13-24 numbers.

The 24 hour time can be nice for travel.

I love millitary watches but don't actually own any! I do have my eye on the CWC G10 PVD though. Your post has made me realise that although I don't own any "military" watches, the watches that do attract me are the ones that would look at home on a nato, the ones that I can imagine anyone in the forces wearing. Even my Aqua Terra lived life on a nato! I imagine the arnie for the special forces, the g shock for the ground troops, the skyhawk for the pilots and the seamaster for the C.O's.

So for me, it's the do all attitude that they inspire when they're on wrist. The thought of being careless in a nonchalant way with a "delicate by nature" item and knowing that it's still going to look good and function the same at the end of its adventure.

I've never really gave it much thought as to why I collect the style of watches I do but your post triggered a thought. So, erm, thanks!

Love War Films and FPS video games, the history the whole genre, military full stop. Never served but have a W10 and 6BB. Lest We Forget

Almost nobody else uses olive green!

Also they tend to be casually masculine without the comical excesses of size, styling, and features that afflict most other tool watches.

·

Military watches were meant to be small and easily read in poor light with a matt finish and Lume

·

Simple features, clean looks, no nonsense.

Simple features, clean looks, no nonsense.

This pretty much sums it up.

Greetings from the 1WC.

Nice! I have the Khaki Field Silver 38mm on my list. Thinking about pulling the trigger on it very soon…

24 hour time is dead easy once you get the hang of it. if you’re past 12 noon, all you have to do is add 12 hours to whatever hour it is. Ex 8 pm + 12 = 20:00

In military time, 24:00 is called zero hour And shown as 0:00

For me, military timepieces remind me of the past, the events that have transpired to get us to where we are today. when I look at the dirty dozen inspired field watches I assembled, I’m transported back to the 1940s. I’ve always been interested in history, military and otherwise. For me, military timepieces are the most honest of timepieces, no-nonsense in their construction, durable and enduring.

I’m speaking specifically about mechanical to pieces here, I appreciate the technology of quartz timepieces, however they’re too modern for me. I’ve always been fascinated by the formal dress of the 1900s-1950s and have tried to apply aspects of it to my everyday life.

Yes, I know I’m hopelessly old fashioned. I’m 19.

Oh, I fully understand 24hr time. I'm just so bad with numbers that I don't trust myself to add and subtract 12 correctly. Not when there's a 19:00 dinner reservation on the the line! 😂Of course if I used 24hr time every day I would adapt.

Ah, understood. 😅

If I am honest, these watches make me feel like I am a tough guy, without leading people to think that that’s I am going for (as some overtly chunky design might convey). So it’s stealth compensation for my inner insecurities! 😂
