Tudor QC is… bad?

I got a Black Bay 54 a bit over a week ago from the Tudor boutique near me and my first impressions were pretty good. The bezel was misaligned by just a hair, which I wasn’t too surprised by for a 60 click bezel, but other than that everything seemed great. That is, until I noticed it was about 8 seconds fast the next day. It’s a COSC certified watch that Tudor claims to also test to -2/+4 seconds so I called the boutique and they recommended I bring it in and they’ll throw it on the timegrapher. It turned out it was indeed running out of spec and also had high beat error, but the boutique has been wonderful to work with and they just offered to replace it with another BB54 they had instead of making me send it in for a warranty repair. They got me this new watch and… it was worse. The threaded tube for the crown was covered in glue that you could actually see even while the crown was screwed down, and spinning thr crown was extremely crunchy. The folks at the boutique again were incredibly helpful and they’ll be contacting me once they get another BB54 in stock and it’ll be reserved for me, but man this is a pretty terrible experience. I don’t think I could recommend a Tudor to any of my friends at this point. If this next BB54 is faulty too I’m just going to be asking for my money as a credit for a different watch, as this boutique is part of a larger jeweler. Has anyone else had a bad experience with Tudor, or is this just me?

3rd time is the charm. Fingers crossed it's better. But that seriously is some bad QC

·

It’s not you. There have been many posts on here complaining about Tudor poor QC.

I have two Tudors. I haven’t had any QC or other issues with them.

I guess this means they have 50 percent defect rate.

Yeah I was joking about my bad luck with the staff at the boutique and also told them third times the charm. They’re giving me a free watch winder for my troubles which I really appreciate but I’m considering turning it down. I don’t really have a need for a watch winder given I don’t have any complicated watches.

Thanks for letting me know. Whenever I get one that works it’ll probably be my first and last Tudor.

Well, they continue to allow that hour hand, so...

My BBGMT arrived from the factory with a defective date wheel issue, my sa actually warned me that the first customer to buy one noticed the problem walking out the door. I reasoned that Rolex Canada would repair the problem under warranty and decided to take my chances. It did eventually fail completely but was repaired perhaps a movement was just fitted in.

I've experienced the date wheel issue on the early releases of the BBGMT and it happened twice. I bought a BB Pro where word 'CHRONOMETER' on the dial had a bad print. That drove me crazy and I've since sold it. Yet I still keep coming back to Tudor. When it works it really works. Currently own a Pelagos 39 which runs +1 spd and it's one of, if not my favourite watch.

Tudor QC is like QC for any brand: you go down an investigative rabbit hole only to realize confirmation bias is going to support whatever it is you're looking for. I think at this price range it's inexcusable but there's no avoiding it. The things we can control is making sure we're buying under a good return policy.

You are more patient than I am. I’m glad to hear your pelagos is great though.

I’ve not had any issues with Tudor and obviously this is what warranty’s are for, it’s sounds like you have had a lot of bad luck. Maybe a bad batch that your AD has received but that doesn’t help you.

Wonder wether the glue fix was done instore rather than at Tudor themselves, I can’t see them using it.

Good luck and hope they source you a good one soon 👍

The glue one was definitely from Tudor. That watch hadn’t even been put in a display case yet and I watched them pull it out of the small white box they get it in, and they seemed fairly embarrassed about how bad it was. I also suspect these two might’ve been from the same or close bad batches. Fingers crossed for the next one 🤞

On the plus side your AD seems pretty awesome

I own five and I’ve had a total of nine over the last five years. I may be a very lucky person, but I have never had a QC issue with any of their watches! They offered that 5 year warranty Which has been a big contributing factor when I purchased mine I also choose to buy from an AD or boutique.

That’s unfortunate. And disheartening. I’ve had 3, currently on a keeper (Ranger) and eyeing the new black on black BB41. No issues here knock on wood ✊ 🪵

My boutique already had the monochrome black bay on display, it looks really nice. If you decide to get it I hope your luck continues and I’m sure you’ll love it.

Picked up two tutors so far, both preowned 1-2 years old, haven’t had a single issue yet.

On a watch that expensive? I have heard that IWC watches are remarkably innacurate. This is just sad.

Very sad considering the price and heritage.

Every mass market brand can and does have things that slip by QC.

The difference is the Customer Service.

This is true, and the customer service has been fantastic. 2 bad ones in a row is pretty rough though. No matter what happens at the end of the day though I’ll be buying one watch or another from this AD

Those that call themself a luxury brand really shouldnt have QC problems.

Almost as if heritage doesnt really matter.

I am also surprised by the shitty service at the boutique. Where is the luxury experience that should come with those prices?

Non existent once they have your coin. Being three hours away from the boutique doesn't help I suppose.

I had a GMT with the date wheel problem…twice! Then they gave me a brand new watch.

The lume then fell out of my pelagos bezel. Again, superb customer service at the Rolex UK HQ fixed that swiftly for me under warranty.

But I still really like Tudor and the BB extended family. They are great watches once you get a good one!

Both issues, as I understand it, were related to early batches, with later parts resolving the issues. So I wouldn't expect the same problem to arise again.

Don't do macro shots on luxury watches because you see a lot more flaws.
