My SOTC 2023

Here is the current state of my collection, which changes very fast. In fact, none of my watches from last year survived to the end of this year. I’m quick to sell watches that never get wrist time and don’t have any sentimental value or unique utility, and I’ve never regretted selling any watch so far. From left to right, top to bottom, we’ve got: Credor 8J81-5020, Casio A1000, Seiko 7a38-7240, G-Shock DW5600, Seiko SPB157, and Omega Seamaster 166.067.

Outside of the box in a drawer I’ve got a Casio LF-20W and a Casio A168. These never get wrist time but aren’t worth the effort to sell. I’ve also got some basic Citizen eco-drive watch and a Casio AE1200WH, but I left those out since they’re both on FB marketplace right now. That citizen is the one I’ve had the longest, about 3 years, but it’s very unremarkable. I’ve bought and sold a lot over the past 2 years, which has helped me realized what I do and do not like. Many microbrands have entered my collection, but none have lasted.

Of my current collection, the SPB157 and G-shock are likely to be permanent staples for years to come. I love hiking mountains so the G-shock is a great tool for me, and that baby alpinist has been around the world with me so I’ve got sentimental value attached to it now.

As for the coming year, hopefully not much will change. While it’s currently keeping great time and has a fairly strong amplitude, I’m going to get that Omega serviced, as it came from an estate sale so I can’t exactly ask the previous owner when it was last serviced. The gasket does seem fairly fresh and there’s plenty of watchmaker marks in it so I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s been serviced in the last decade. I hope to add an Explorer I or Datejust to my collection once I graduate grad school hopefully in 2025 (I work full time, so my graduation time is really anyone’s guess) but other than that I really love all the watches in my collection, and think this is the best my collection has been. Thank you to anyone who read this far and I hope you have a fantastic holidays and a great New Years!

Love that Credor. I got my father a Seiko Dolce of similar case design that he loved...you have the upgraded version. Beautiful.

Thanks! I actually had set out to buy a dolce but this caught my eye. It’s incredible how good of a deal these are.

Wow! Love that Credor and the Vintage Omega. I've been looking at adding a vintage Omega to my collection.

Tell me a bit more about your Omega. Where do you plan to get it serviced? Sounds you live in the UK?

Love a baby Alpinist. Where did you pick up the bracelet for it?

The Omega was a recent pick up so I don’t have too much to say. It’s far from a perfect example of these 166.067 Seamasters, it’s been polished, its crystal has been replaced, and for whatever reason the crown has been replaced too. I got it for about half what these normally go for though so I was willing to take the risk. It’s runs great though and the movement inside is in fantastic condition. I’m in the US actually, and there’s a few watchmakers local to me so I was just going to bring it to a few of them to hear what they have to say. I know it’ll probably cost more than the watch did but it’s worth it to make sure I don’t damage it from neglect.

It’s a strapcode bracelet. The quality is fantastic but I really wish they didn’t use male end links. I guess if you’ve got a decent size wrist it doesn’t matter, but mine are 6.5” so it does change the way it wears on my wrist a little bit.
