King Seiko SPB285, my last purchase of 2023
Wanted to share my last purchase of the year. 2023 was a year of triumphs and great challenges for me and I wanted to mark the end of the year with something special.
The King Seiko reissues have always been a bit controversial amongst enthusiasts. Mostly due to the movement which isn't befitting of the KS title. While I do agree with that notion, seeing the KS in person completely changed my mind. The case architecture, zaratsu polishing, fantastic bracelet, and the overall high level of finishing is really something else in the flesh. I'm glad I didn't allow the naysayers to deter me from making the jump.
Had my heart set on the silver as it was the most faithful to the original 44KS, but once I saw the tobacco brown I knew it was the one. In classic Seiko fashion, the dial has different personalities in different lighting. Going from a bronze, to a chocolate brown to a deep purple to black in different lighting conditions.
Also happy to report the 6R31 is running at +2 seconds a day after a week of running. Anyways, just wanted to share my thoughts on my favorite purchase of the year.

I tried on a King last year, on a whim, and was shocked how great it looked and felt. Good to know the 6R31 is a solid movement as well.

Defjnitely not the hi beat chronometer of the past. However I think Seiko made this more accessible to the enthusiast and I can get behind that. I personally find myself caring more about longer power reserves than the smooth sweep

I definitely got it on a good deal, I do think retail is steep but deals come by every now and then

That looks fantastic! My mom surprised me for Christmas this year and bought me a Bulova Aerojet with a similar case and dial. I love that chocolate sunburst style dial🙌🏽
