Do you think more people would like quartz if they were all sweeping seconds hands like the 262?

I catch myself watching the seconds hand glide around the dial when I wear this thing. Until I pick up a spring drive or an electrostatic accutron, this is the closest I'll get.

I do think it would grab the attention of people who hate the ticking sound, and people who like looking at the smooth sweep. I recently replaced a wall clock with a special sweeping hand quartz model because the loud clicking was getting to me. Enjoy that breakfast, Chris. Yum! 👍

·

I think most people don't care about how the second hand moves. I think a few vocal enthusiasts care, and that creates the idea in the watch community that a smooth sweeping second hand is important.

I'll take a ticking second hand with a long battery life over a smooth sweep with a shorter battery life any day.

·

I prefer quartz for being so maintenance free. I like the precisionist from Bulova but also any watch with the seiko VH31 movement that mimics an automatic movement. 🫡

·

No because people who hate quartz will always hate quartz. Lol

·

Unlike many, I have never really notice ticking sounds from any of my quartz watches, including Timex weekenders, unless I actually hold them up to my ear.

I'm sure those that dislike the ticking movement of quartz seconds hand would love a smoother movement, but be warned that many (Seiko VH31) of these come with a much shorter battery life.

·

I would! That chunk… chunk… chunk… is kind of unnerving

·

My only reason for really disliking quartz is the need to buy batteries. As such, I don’t mind my Seiko solar being quartz. Moreover, I absolutely adore my GS spring drive, which combines mechanical movement with quartz precision, although to your point: the sweeping seconds hand is one of its endearing features.

·

100% Brother 🤙🏽 But maybe not that Transformer design watch LOL 😆

·

The reason I prefer automatic movements is because it creates a connection with the watch. If I don’t wear it or have it in a winder, I have to start all over. With quartz it’s always ready to go. That’s definitely nice if that’s what you looking for. However to me, it’s more of an emotional connection that I have.

So true I don’t give a damn about the seconds hand, since in a analog watch is not really relevant unless it’s a chrono

Many have solar now

·

I prefer mechanical for the intricate cogs ⚙️ in motion on the inside, that generate power and keep time without electricity.

Nothing against quartz, but it doesn’t do anything to help (or hurt) my obsession for mechanical watches.

·

100% yes… that tick is so jarring to watch and on 80% of watches the seconds hand doesn’t line up with the second … my OCD don’t play that

·

You should also get a mechanical watch with dead-beat seconds, just to be contrarian.

·

I used to own the black and red version, great watch — sometimes I miss it. Thing was a tank though!

·

I love bulovas precionist movement, I just wish they'd make simpler and wearable designs. That being said, the watch you have really works on you and looks great.

Agree 100%.

Those jet stars are awesome! I need to see one in the flesh

That makes two of us, good sir. Still I’m very attracted to it. Only thing that could make it better for me is that they removed the date.

·

Just looks great. I can enjoy both mechanical and quartz watches, just depends on how I bond with the watch. Honestly the way the hand moves doesn't dictate what I like. Though I do tend to just enjoy mechanical movements more in general.

·

Yes, I do 👍

·

The sweep on bulovas is nice. I like both quartz and mechanical I don't mind ticking either, I have a timex that's LOUD - it's cool. My #1 Watch out of all 110 is my (pre Citizen) Sea King

I certainly would. I can do mechaquartz or quartz without a seconds hand, but that ticking bothers me. There are several GS watches I could live with, but in general the ticking seconds hand is a turn off to me.

I adore the ticking lol

·

What's the ref on this?

·

Possibly. I think the mechanical has a nostalgia and fascination to it. And possibly, a bit of snobbery from the rebranding during the quartz revolution to some degree (varying depending on the person). I think if it wasn't a sweeping second, the next would be quartz analog models hitting their indices more precisely when the second hand ticks.

I do have a sweeping seconds quartz, and it's quite nice. Downside is the 2 year battery life.

Personally, I like both mechanical and quartz finding them fascinating in their own ways. Though I do wish quartz was a bit more serviceable.

I don't make much sense that a quartz movement wants to imitate an automatic movement.

On the one hand, the movement will have much more wear and tear and the battery will last much less time.

I know people who hate these movements, because they claim that they pretend to be something they are not.

·

Damn that's a lot of syrup

People will hate on almost anything

In my point of view, any watch is good, as long as you like it and can afford it. But, there are many prejudices in the world of horology and there are people who, for example, do not have any quartz watches in their collections.

To each their own.
