Blancpain / Swatch is better than the MoonSwatch

I’ve seen a fair amount of hate for the Blancpain / Swatch line on YouTube. Endless criticism of 1) bio-ceramic being a marketing name for plastic; 2) cheap disposable movements; 3) shitty quality NATO straps… I’ve got news for you - 1) my Casio G-Shock is plastic and it wasn’t cheap. 2) The easiest & cheapest way to fix a Seiko NH35 is to throw it away and replace it with a new movement. 3) The default NATO is as good if not better than most cheap after-market options.

I picked up this white Blancpain / Swatch for about $400 in Miami’s South Beach yesterday while on a business trip. It’s become a instant memory capsule that will forever remind me of Sun, Sand, and the City’s vibrant culture.

Net net - these are cool automatic watches that help to raise the visibility of this great, non-mainstream brand into the public consciousness. As such it’s doing a great service to horology and, imho, is more fun + creative than the MoonSwatch.

I actually want one. But you can get a Bulava Mil Ships for the same money. They are skinning the sheep instead of shearing it IMO.

·

Adding the #swatch tag.

My issue with it is the availability, same as the MoonSwatch. I can understand not being available at all stores, but there's no reason why it can't be available online in this digital age.

·

Well the point of the movement being thrown away in more affordable watches instead lf being service might be true, but as far as i understand it, in the swatch blancpain the movement cannot be changed out period. So this makes it infact a throwaway watch. I love the designs and I don't mind plastic, but i want my watches to last 😅

·

I would say, a watchmaker I've used before will regulate a bare bones Seiko for $25-ishUS.

Which last I checked is cheaper than buying a new one.

Granted he doesn't do online send ins, store only.

Love the color and style, the only thing I don't get is the marketing as ocean/eco safe. Once the movement dies, it's dead. Maybe you can reuse the case.

So in what, 10, 20 years they won't work and will be trinkets on a desk?

Whereas a little old Seiko 5, even though it might cost a bit, could in theory be repaired for more memories.

Unless I'm missing something? YMMV.

·

I got the Sea of Storms right away.

The date wheel broke two days into owning it.

It looks great but it’s $400 + tax and I’m sorry but the quality is shit. My moonswatches lasted longer. Also, when you consider what could be had at the $450 range, for why would you buy this? Also, yes G-shocks are plastic, but they can be had for as low as $50 and are built to last decades.

In any case, you should enjoy it in good health. It’s a great looking watch, and I’m glad it works for you!!! 🙏🏽

·

Better than the moon swatch ?

Its obviously a question of taste, personally i think there both terrible.

But heres the thing, it only matters what you think of it. I have watches im guessing most people won't like, but i couldn't care less. If you love it, its worth whatever you paid for it, enjoy 👌

·

I like the concept. I just think the execution is poor. Like the moonswatch, poor quality and bad sales management or bad management in regards to the release. Flippers catered to. I also believe that they could have gone with a different brand collaboration with their second release. Longines or Hamilton would have been a better choice in my opinion.

·

Best color of the line

·

This is the only one I have seen that seems like a worthy homage of sorts. I am tempted, however the idea that once the battery such as it is is done in, you have to give it to a recycler. That is the only reason I dont go out and buy one however I have a question this one has a grey haze on it that the pictures on the swatch site seemed to be blacker like the original, can u tell me if it is just the way the camera captured it and it is black,. If so I may get one this looks tens times cooler than any of the moonswatches (in my opinion)

I'm not mad at either of these watches. I'm not interested in buying one either, but I can appreciate what Swatch is doing even if it's not for me.

They're bringing some accessibility and fun to the appreciation of iconic (and very expensive/nigh unobtainable) watch models. And it's sad to think that's so much of what folks have their panties in a twist over. 🙄 Like, it's ruining their sense of exclusivity and superiority.

We know wristwatches, particularly mechanicals, are obsolete and the luxury market is tanking and it's hard for brands to stay relevant. We talk about how we wish our love of watches was better understood and that watches were a little more mainstream. Then things come along that democratize the landscape a little. The Swatch collabs, Chinese watches, microbrand, heck even quartz itself! And someone always has to get hurt feelings over it. I don't get it.

Also I'm like, getting a twitch in my eye everytime someone calls bioceramic plastic. I have no skin in the game around these watches, but for crying out loud, bioceramic is a different material than plastic. It takes two seconds on Wikipedia to figure this out before having an uninformed, knee jerk response. It's like calling steel case watches "made from tin cans". It's just not accurate, regardless of what your big feelings are. 😮‍💨

·

I have the same one. I like it. Want to pick up the new one next time I am able 👍

Mejor o peor...

·

I wouldn’t buy one but it’s great marketing by swatch for blancpain. Hopefully it will get more people into the watch community.

·

Had mine a few weeks now, wore it for work today ,banged it against some racking, luckily it was under my thick pullover so no damage, still enjoying it

On a watch I bought two days ago?

I should wait another unknown amount of time for them to source a new one? (The model I bought is apparently very “rare”).

And the best part is, they’re not even sure they can source a new one for me!

They should be able to send it back and provide you with a new one within a week or two. These stores get shipments in every week and will just set one aside. If they don’t warranty it then dispute your credit card transaction. You paid for a working watch, doesn’t matter if it’s been two days or two months, if it’s under warranty you should get it resolved

·

I'll be very controversial but these collabs are such a terrible choice, especially when you can get such a variety of both vintage and new watches from reputable brands with great movements, design and build quality cheaper. I personally refuse to even entertain these watches and I'm not snobbish, as today I'm waiting on a beautiful timex multi coloured waterbury being delivered today which is cheaper but such better value, but also own various Omegas and Breitling watches etc, and if youenjoy these watches more power to you but i personallythink they're the emporers new clothes.

·

Solid points overall but I dont want to pay that price for a watch with this many downsides. I also think that the obky reason to buy a Moonswatch or the Blancpain/Swatch is the design, and its just not that great either(imo). The entire package surrounding a watch, which consists of heritage, technology, design, build quality but also price is just not a really good one, however if you like it then enjoy the watch, there are probably watches that I praise that you would never go for.

I felt similarly. I bought a Mission to Uranus a year ago, wore it once and gave it to my daughter. It was the fairly rubbish quartz movement with awkward hand alignment issues that did it for me. The Velcro strap is also unpleasant. I have a 3861 Speedy anyway, so no real loss. Until I saw a BP/Swatch on the wrist, I’d convinced myself that I’d be similarly disappointed but it won me over. Putting aside the cost (which is relative depending on your means), the original FF does have lots of history and kudos. I think these Swatch FFs are respectful homages to that. Seikos are fine but don’t last in my collection very long - I’ve sold a few and gifted others. They don’t fit a use case for me and I’m not excited by the brand. Same for Hamilton, Longines, Timex and Bulova (mentioned elsewhere in the comments). Each to their own, of course.

Own the uranus moonswatch and hope to own the ocean of storms or atlantic ocean of the swatchpain. No hate here. 🤩

Agreed. What prompted the post that I was genuinely surprised by how much I liked the Swatch FF once I got it on the wrist. I’d convinced myself it was another corporate cash grab. I think the reality is more nuanced than that. Somebody got excited putting this concept together. There is flair and passion in its design - it’s not a straight copy. I also respect that they continued the tradition that there’s never going to be a quartz Blancpain. But like you say, each to their own - the best thing about horology and watch collecting :)

I can't make peace with the price is all. Good watch otherwise

Fair enough. Personally, I’d much rather spend ~$400 on one of these than a G-Shock. The latter are super practical and robust, but I don’t get ‘the fizz’ when wearing one.

·
JJMM1983

You really have to be a Blancpain/Swatch fan to throw $400 bucks. There's tons and tons of watches in the grey, used market and microbrands even worse. When comparing the watches to the Swatch starts to look like a fun toy.

Bulova for 100-150 more offers an actual watch with heritage

I don’t disagree. The first watch I ever modded was a FF homage from a SNZH55. I’m a fan of the brand and think these Swatch FF pay respect to their history. Bulovas, Alpinas, Seikos etc are fine but not my cup of tea 🫖

·

Much adeiu about nothing…. 😐

·

I like 'em, will get one for sure- but no way paying flipper tax or going to cesspit London to get one.

Like the product, hate the sales method 🤬

·

The main point is the time capsule for the experience. Not my bag, but that means anything to me only. Wear it in good health!

I tried man.

They told me they couldn’t know how soon they would get a replacement. And not wanting to let the 14 day period expire and me be $400 into a plastic Watch with a throwaway movement.

I made peace with it and returned it.

That's the right choice unfortunately, can't let them sell you a broken product.

I think if you like the original style BPs from back in the day you could spend a little more and get the Squale Sub 39mm I have the limited edition Bludi Melo version and is powered by a Sellita and will last forever, amd they actually made the cases for a time of the BP, but if you enjoy the swatch x BP then more power to you as we all make our own choices

·

I like the look, my only issue with it is the serviceability (same as other swatch automatic watches)
