Stay at 5 or reduce to 3?

Hello friends,

I have a powerful desire to reduce my collection to three watches, but I’m not sure how to approach that. Please tell me what to do. I do simultaneously have a hankering for a new watch, so I’d be open to selling a few and onboarding another. I do love all of these, but I feel like I should put some hard limitations on this watch thing so it doesn’t become ridiculous.

Idk. Thanks!

It's the next prime number less than 5 😁

Rather than reducing maybe change your collection up. You have 2 omegas that are very similar (except the straps). Your date just and oris are on very similar straps so maybe switch one to a jubilee (I’d suggest the Rolex). Maybe add some colour dials on a rubber/sailcloth strap. Also you could add either a bronze or titanium into the mix

·

I’d keep the Rolex, Cartier, and Arabic numbered Omega.

·

Oh, I forgot to say what 3!

I'd keep the vintage 3-6-9 Seamaster, the Oris, and the Roly, for a dress-diver-GADA power trio.

Or keep 'em all. There's enough variety to keep.

And 5 is also a prime number...

Forsure. I went oyster on the dj as it’s my only Rolex so I wanted to hit all of my favourite design elements from them. In the market for a jubilee bracelet, it would be nice to have the option

Dunno the Rolex and the Cartier

True! I didnt realize it was a prime number thing until you said it lol.

If it were me, I would keep the DateJust, the Oris, and one of the Omegas. I don't know much about vintage Omega, but they look quite similar to me. As for the Tank, yes, yes, I know, the Cartier is the OG and iconic, but it's so iconic it's now generic.

·

I’m not best person to give advice about collecting since I have gone through stages … but one thing I know is follow your heart whatever it is and it will take shape no matter what it is and it will be you and yours alone…be true to your collecting self and it will be fine… but no matter course you take it will definitely be an adventure in itself!! Have fun my friend and I hope your journey will Be fruitful!! 🍻

·

Just for the looks, heritage & versatility I'd be keeping the Rolex, the 3-6-9 Omega & the Oris.

But if I had that 5 watch collection, I don't know that I'd be going to 3. I'd probably sell the other Omega & going for a field watch if it were me.

Of course, sentimentality of some of these pieces might come into play, but that's what I would do not knowing about the emotions.

·

Whatever you do keep the cartier! That watch will work anywhere from the beach to the palace!

The omega on bracelet seems the obvious choice to cut first. Why not start with reducing to 4..

Must be a prime number thing as I’m looking at 7 in total, I’m on 5 at min but just ordered my 6th. Sadly will have to wait till next year for 7

Reduce. I'd keep Rolex and Cartier. Sell the others, to upgrade to a better diver 62MAS (or reissue) or Omega Seamaster?

This is quite close to what I was thinking. I had an SPB143 and loved it, I’d like an SLA043/017/037. Or maybe a Tudor bb58.

·

I find the Oris quite generic. Chopping block.

I would keep the Omega that's on the bracelet. If you have nice strap options for it, then the other one becomes redundant. (I guess you could say the same of the other Omega, depends if you prefer the steel or the gold case.)

I'd keep the DJ.

The Cartier never did anything to me, but it does have some personality.

·

Maybe get rid of one of the Omegas but keep the rest

·

Reduce to three to enjoy much more your timepieces. I would keep one dressy, one sporty and would search for a wild card, maybe a chrono or a GMT.

I would keep the datejust, the Oris amd sell the others to buy the wild card.

Yup! It's how I try and keep my collection - I'm currently at 7, but on my way down to 5. Maybe 3 (+ a G-Shock) by the end on the year maybe.

·

B, the omegas are redundant, get different type if you want 5, a pilot or field or chrono and a g shock.

·

Keep the Oris, Cartier, and one Omega. Rolex too. But have more fun with straps.

I like Seiko diver of those two, you hit three heavy weights, of Rolex, Cartier and Seiko. A balanced diet of iconic makers. Also Seiko would make a good beater, when you don't want to wear anything conspicuous. I recommended Omega diver, then you've hit then top 3 swiss watchmakers (by sales) 1st Rolex, 2nd Cartier 3rd Omega. That would look quite tidy collection too. However, if you went Tudor, you've overeaten from the Hans Wilsdorf Group buffet lol.

Great collection🔥

I did the same thing I had 21 watches and decided it was daft having so many

I already had the speedmaster and as I’ve owned one speedy or another and it’s my favourite watch I’ve ever had and is so versatile it can be worn anywhere and any strap it was a shoe in

I wanted a tegamented sinn U50 for everyday use as it’s robust good looking you never have to worry about damaging it and it has a timing bezel that I use all the time

Chose the grand seiko as it is also a nice understated watch will always be set at the right time so good reference for the others and has just enough bling to shine in the sun light.

I sold a bunch of lovely watches to get these three including three Sinns a Tudor gmt a blue seamaster and a lovely Aqua tera.

I had trouble finding the right U50 with the right spec so I bought a seiko dive watch to tide me over I had an skx but i hadn’t yet sold it as I was having trouble letting it go so I got a spb147. Until I found my sinn

Trouble is I’ve now got my three watch collection and a Seiko diver collection to go with it 🫣 I failed badly with three watches and now I’m in the process of buying back some of the ones I sold 🤷‍♂️

My advice is don’t let go of anything unless you are sure you won’t miss it and don’t worry about the number you have if you connect with them keep them it’s better in the long run

I think I’d keep the Rolex and a dress watch (probably the Cartier). Sell the other 3 and get a great diver/daily tool.

·

Multiply by 3

·

I would Keep the 3 on the left.

  1. Rolex

  2. Omega - on bracelet

  3. Oris

😊👌🏻

I wish I had the wrist for a Seamaster, the seaweed green one is beautiful

·

It depends on your lifestyle and your sentimental attachment to watches.

One way to determine if the three is enough is to define three categories with the characteristics that each category requires to meet your lifestyle.

Pick three, one for each category, hide the others for a while, and see if you feel ok.

In my case, I need minimum of 4 watches, one per category below.

Dress

Business

Mountain

Fun (to add colour to otherwise too serious looking collection)

I have 2 in “Mountain” category now. I allow myself to have two as I spend so much time in mountains.

And I have one I can’t let go as I’m sentimentally attached to it spending 24 years with it.

So I have six in total and I am happy with that, no longer feeling the urge to reduce my collection to this magic “3” number😊

I'm going to be the rare voice of reason and say that hard limitations are usually a good idea but only you can determine what that limit is for your situation. For me? That's a 6 + 1 rule (6 in case and 1 on nightstand). Given what you have? I'd say keep for now and maybe swap one or two out and build back out to your ideal 5. I'd lose one of the Omegas and the Oris.

·

Ditched the Omega on strap and choose another fifth. Keep at five
