The most overpriced watches and brands

Today's an easy one: which watch or watch brands offer the lowest value for what they charge, in your opinion?

Hublot, IWC and the current pricing for many Seikos (sad to say) immediately come to my mind.

Tag heuer

I say Breitling SuperOceans. I love their look and finish but I had trouble rationalizing the price.

·

Rolex

·

Hublot and IWC for sure.

·

I know I will uninentional offent others but by my own experience it is Maurice Lacroix in the entry level but trying being the mid tier. Don't take it personal if it doesn't match to your idea.

But also Breitling, Tag Heuer and Cartier.

It's not a judgment about the watches itself. Omly for the prices.

But as I said, it's my opinion.

Tag heuer

Sorry, have to disagree there. I think what you get for the money, compared to the competition, is pretty good, especially in the Carrera line ($3k-$6k range).

·

Louis Vuitton with their newly redesigned tambour

The Careera Chronos are alright but the 36&39mm versions have sellitas in them and the Formula 1 line is straight up disrespectful when you realite they are sporting a 25€ Ronda in there

Damn, that’s a lot of typos

Agreed, not everything is great, but models with the Heuer 02 and TH20-00 movements like the new Glassbox models, that fall in that ~$6k range I think are pretty impressive. Just my opinion.

While I think some Breitlings are overpriced, anything with a B01 movement in it is not.

I see the same with other manufacturers. If you are using a third party movement and are pricing the watch in line with some of your in house calibers, then it's justified to say that the entry level stuff is overpriced. But every brand needs an entry point.

Are the $1500-2000 Oris watches overpriced now that you can pay double that for a Caliber 400 watch? Not sure. I have an Oris with a Sellita movement in it and I love that watch. YMMV. It really depends on what you value in a watch.

when you think you can get a tudor or a speedmaster at that range...

Anything by Rolex. They're mass produced watches that are sold at levels well above where they should be priced.

·

Zero west and bremont are also difficult to justify.

Rolex

I am far from a Rolex fanboy, but this baffles me: Rolex produce high quality pieces that are reliable and will last a lifetime. At retail, I believe they are fairly priced. I don't own a Rolex and never have, but the reasons for that have nothing to do with their pricing.

I'm curious, what models do you consider overpriced, and what would a fair price be?

·

Love it, though I believe it’s got a 24 jewel 2824 in it.

Hublot and IWC for sure.

I dont think it is fair to put Hublot and IWC in the same sentence but I will admit the newest Ingenieur is a nice piece but they missed the mark with the price..Way to high..IMO..I have the older one and it will stay in my collection..

Now Hublot...I have no use for..but again JMO..Enjoy the hobby

Too bad the resale is so good.

·

I guess it comes down to what you value.

For example -

if you value design, novelty and innovation then hublots are great and rolexes are awful.

if you value authenticity longines are great and tudor is awful

if you value specs then ali watches are great and everything else is rubbish.

Ok, you said that value is subjective. There is subjectivity about aspects, but the price of materials, cost of labor, marketing and all of the quantifiable bottom line parts of manufacture are not subjective, nor is the markup and profit margin that the item is sold for. How much you value those things is entirely subjective, and that's how valuable a thing is to you.

"the price of materials, cost of labor, marketing and all of the quantifiable bottom line parts of manufacture are not subjective, nor is the markup and profit margin that the item is sold for."

This is true, but those things by themselves do not define the value, how much value a watch offers, or how valuable a watch is to me. There is emotion, taste, preferences and other elements that will be just as if not far more influential.

Even when the objective elements appear attractive, If I do not like a watch, it has no value to me. It isn't valuable, it offers no value.

·

Hublot by a large margin.

·

I'd like to add modern day JLC. Their price increases over the last 1-1,5 years were ridiculous. Compare older JLC movements to the newer versions and you can even see the finishing got worse.

For the love of...dont apologize three times in the same post for your honest opinion. If someone takes it personal, its his poblem.

Posting and reading different opinions is the whole point of this site, is it not?

Anything not aragon

I'm not sure if your comment is humorous or serious - maybe some of both? When I saw my first Aragon on a video I thought I'd love to have that, wonder how many thousands it costs? The price was $139. I ordered one from my computer on the spot, the only time I have ever done this. And to your point, if Aragon can make all these original designs with first class build quality and materials and sell them all at affordable prices, why can't everybody?

I'm totally happy with all of my aragons, while they're not for everyone, it's hard to argue about their quality for the price they sell their watches for

I was about the look seriously at an Ingenieur at the same time they launched this new series. Money grab. I desisted.
