First automatic, Seiko 5 grey or black

I'm looking to get my first automatic watch and I narrowed it down to the Seiko 5 field watch in either grey or black. When I first saw the grey I was in love with it, but now I'm worrying it will be harder to match with outfit and straps, and also a bit worried how blue the grey really is. I've only been able to find the black version in real life and it looks amazing.

So I'm hoping for opinions (obviously very personal), what would you get? Also hoping someone owning the grey version could chime in on how they like it.

I'd go gray just because I think black is funereal and formal. With what does grey not go? It's a total neutral, even more neutral than black to me. Change the band and it will just look like coolly faded black anyway.

·

Out of the whole line up, the green. Such a cool dial to me. Out of the two options presented, the black. Traditional field watch and I love traditional styling on watches

·

The grey is very nice. My DressKX is also grey and it’s not as hard to pair up with stuff as you think. Either way, great watch!

·

My heart goes to the grey dial.

More versatile, more lightcatcher. Strap monster without any doubt.

The black has the only advantage to have a matching date wheel (I personaly don't care but better to notice before pulling the trigger).

No bad choice here mate, go with what you like the most and, very important, what you feel comfortable with.

i would go for black, and then you still can get any nato strap colour. green, grey, blue, khaki would still fit the black dial

·

Black is the best and only option in my opinion. There again I always get black dials , I have two on route to me  now!

Keep saying I must buy other colours but I keep ordering black dials. But it will go with anything it does look amazing and you can add a pop of colour with a strap change.

Black 100 %

·

the neutral grey provides a nice color contrast, great choice!

·

I like the black dual BUT ... you are drawn to gray. This eatch sits on your wrist. Get what you want. There are a ton of strap options to change up the look.  Go with what you like

·

I would get grey because it is more versatile. Grey on black straps looks very stealthy.

·

Gray!

·

Both are great black would appear slightly more formal, grey might be slightly more fun and versatile but it would be best to choose as to how you envision wearing the watch if you can get a chance see them personally do it you will go for one over other and buying your first mechanical watch is really special, so congratulations

·

I’d go grey - suits the playfulness of the watch, and gives you an excuse to go searching for another black dialled watch 😜

·

I have the grey version and totally dig it:  https://www.instagram.com/p/Ch2SHZSjex-/ and https://www.instagram.com/p/CfrZV2eg9gW/

I Would get the black, but both are nice, there is no error choice.

·

Personally, out of the two choices, I would choose the gray, but only because I have several black dial watches already. Gray is pretty neutral, so you shouldn't have too much of a problem matching with straps. Plus, it's the one you were initially drawn to. Black is a safe bet, if you're just unsure. Both are great choices.

·

I would go grey just to mix it up, it will look great with a multitude of straps

·

The world is full of black dial watches, go with grey.

·

Black baby.

·

If you get the black you will like it and then regret not getting the one you wanted. Get the grey if that’s the one you love. It will go with anything. Both are great watches!

Thanks for all the comments, it’s been really helpful, especially the photos of both watches! I’m gonna stick with the grey, that’s the one I fell in love with. Thanks!

·

I think a gray watch dial can still be very versatile. The gray watch strap however not so much I feel like, but that's the beauty of dressing it up with other straps.

·

Gray for me. The black dial looks a bit flat and the gray one appears to have more texture. Definitely looks more special with a bit of vintage vibe.

·

If you’re on this forum, it’s unlikely you’ll stop at one watch. Given how black dials are more common than grey dials, if you find a grey dial you like, you might as well get it to increase the chances of variety in your collection.

But if this is your one watch for a long time, I do think the black dial accessorizes easier than the grey.

Stunning on photos, how does it wear?

·

Grey. I’m bored to death of black dials. 👌

Stunning on photos, how does it wear?

As mentioned, I was only able to find the black version in real life, it wears amazing and looks really good. I'm just in love with the grey, although i only saw it online.

Id go for the black one but mainly because this morning I bought a full black and it looks amazing! It depends on your collection in my opinion, for me all black was just right and it called to me over the two you’ve posted! They both look amazing to me, you’ll be doing a great purchase with either! Go ahead and enjoy you’re choice!
