My Dad’s Rolex

This is my first post—I figured if there’s a place to document this, this is it! In 2000 my Dad passed away and his Rolex was passed on to me.

At age 17 there was no way I felt okay wearing it at the time so it sat in a safe deposit box for years. Even throughout my 20s I knew it was in there, but still didn’t feel like I was in a place in life to wear it without looking like a douche.

In 2019, at age 36 I had a slew of weddings to attend. My mother finally convinced me to get the Rolex out of the box and from there begun my interest in watches. Before I had put on my Dad’s Rolex (which comedian Jimmy O. Yang hilariously hit the nail on the head saying ‘Every Asian Dad owns this watch!’) I had only ever worn a trusty quartz Victorinox watch.

When my Mom told me simply wearing the watch would keep the Rolex powered, I was actually pretty shocked. I literally had no clue or knowledge about Automatic movements and from there I fell down the rabbit hole. When COVID hit in 2020, my interest in watched only grew as there were countless hours watching guys like Teddy on YouTube to kill the time.

And now this weekend, I’ve tied the knot. I wish my Dad was here to share in the special moment. But by wearing his watch it felt like he was very much with us in spirit.

Congratulations on your wedding and new journey. What a great story. The way these small mechanical keep us connected to loved ones who have moved on is amazing. Hopefully you will be able to pass it down too. 🙏

Thx for the post! New to Jimmy O Yang but not to being Chinese and dads who wore Rolex watches. My own dad wore a steel Rolex OP manual calendar adjustment model, great man but I wanted to make my own history, prefer almost any other manufacture. I could never be he and there is no watch that matches his 60s OP.

Great post and watch

·

Beautiful watch, and great sentimental value.

Probably for the best that you didn’t wear it (and likely abuse it) while you were younger.
