Everyday options

Hello everyone, I want to ask for opinions. I recently sold my King Turtle, I like the design and the aesthetics, but maybe for me it's too heavy for everyday wear on my wrist at 6.75 inches in diameter. I want to replace it with a watch with a budget of 500 - 600 USD , and the strongest candidate at the moment is New Seiko Alpinist, i think the dial is stunning, and the other two are Squale Atmos and SM BB Pro Homage. I have SPB143 62 Mas and it is very comfortable on my wrist. What do you think about these three watches, and the experience of wearing them. Thanks

The Seiko Alpinist is definitely a stunner. If it‘s going to be your everyday, maybe the Baby Alpinist SPB155 is an option to consider.  Certainly lighter than the KT, no compass wheel (unless you would actually use it) and depending on your preference, no cyclops (like the SARB017).
Good luck.

The Alpinist is on my 2023 list too.  👍

The SPB121 is the best choice out the three. You got a beautiful design, the dial is juts pure classic, can be dressed down or up with different straps, 20m lug width and 200m water resistance so plenty enough to handle everyday situations. Also, if you like there is a model without the compass too, SPB155 and lot more color options.

The Squale would have been equally good choice but considering you have a SPB143 already, a change from diver style would be a nice addition.

I moved on from my SPB121 after a few months. A few things that added up: Beautiful dial but I found that gold accents are too flashy for my taste. Secondary crown that operates the compass bezel kept shifting throughout the day and it kind of bothered me. Compass felt gimmicky, whereas a GMT or chrono actually has some identifiable use case, I didn’t know how to use the compass and had no desire to learn. OEM strap was uncomfortable and didn’t match the watch IMO. The 6R35 movement lottery is real and for me it wasn’t as accurate as I would have liked. I really wanted to love the watch and it is objectively pretty stunning. I found myself wishing I went for the baby alpinist instead. Awesome watch, just wasn’t right for me.

The alpinist is way more versatile in my opinion, love the dual crown, the inner compass, the 20 bar WR and the 70h power reserve.

I'm not really into divers so the Squale is out and I would be bothered that my everyday watch is an hommage. so definitely alpinist for me

Seiko, Seiko, Seiko and Seiko 🔥🔥

·

I voted for the Squale. For an everyday piece, the black is more versatile than the green and gold of the Alpinist.

Now if dials are your thing, then it’s hard to beat a Seiko at your price point.

·

as an everyday piece I would want a date so I would go for the alpinist or maybe other watches from the alpinist lineup like the baby alpinist or this one

Cant comment on two of them, but I have an Alpinist. The dial and quality of the watch are great, but mine loosing 50+ seconds a day ! I believe that the 6r35 movement is a bit hit and miss and you may get a great one if you decide on this watch. Mine needs regulating anyway.

I’m not entirely sure on the dimensions of the SM BB Pro, but I feel like if bulk was part of your problem with the Turtle, you may want to give the BB Pro a hard think before buying. I know it isn’t as thick as the OG, but San Martin definitely make some sturdy watches.

I own the SPB123 and it is a beautiful watch and would be a wonderful daily. The case is a touch thicker than you think it should be, but it’s not bulky, just a little chubby. I concur with the commenter who observed the compass moves a bunch; if that would bother you I would recommend going in either the baby Alpinist direction or one of the ’59 reissues. Don’t get in your head about the green dial or gold indices; no one cares and it is far from ostentatious.

I don’t have any Squale experience so I can’t comment there. But seems like you have great choices here - be encouraged! You can’t mess it up!

·

None of these. Sinn 556, on OEM H-Link bracelet if you can strech to this

·

I changed my vote to SPB121 only because I missed you already have an SPB143. Those two watches will give you all the options you need.

The Alpinist is on my 2023 list too.  👍

It weighs sbout 85g from a reviewer on Youtube, i think it would make a perfect everday wear.

I like the second crown, which make the watch looks 'fieldy', but i doubt i'll use it.

Thanks for the advice, and goodluck for your wishlist 🤝

Agree ! the dial is classic, that's what i thought too, the Alpinist could be dressed up or down easily, and it's tough also !

I also like the dial of the NC Alpinist, but distortion of the single domed sapphire kept pulling me back, i don't understand why Seiko never made double domed watches at this price point.

Thank for the advice 🙏

Honestly i've never seen the green dial in person. I saw the brown dial at my local AD the other day, i think it's stunning and more versatile than the green one, but it has less legibility.

You're right about the compass, it feels gimmicky and from what i heard, the crown should be operable on the wrist, that's what makes it feels loose.

Thank you for the input 🤝

50+ is much, i have SPB143 with 6R35, gain 20 secs a day which is not good either 😀

Thans for the input

What a coincidence, i should check him out, sounds interesting on his opinion.

Thanks for the input👍

The SM BB Pro has 40mm diameter and 13mm thickness. That similar size with the Alpinist, but i've never seen them in person, only judge by the specs.

Is Alpinist comfortable on your wrist ? Does the moving compass bother you ?

I also think of the cream dial, it's also stunning and more versatile than the green one.

I really like the Sinn, much better quality than Seiko Prospex, but it's way off my budget for everyday watch.

If you are set on the classic Alpinist and want a bit of more versatility away from the gold accents,  the SPB117 black dial variant may be a better choice. Also comes on the bracelet which is one of the good ones from Seiko (apart from the micro adjustment holes).

A small advice on the 6R35, out of the box accuracy is odd but use the watch for a month and get it regulated. It can easily be regulated to +/-5 seconds. I have all my Seikos with 6R35 regulated to +2 seconds a day and I have never had issues to date.

·

Thanks Bill, I will get it regulated when I get the chance. Its not an everyday watch so perhaps somewhat to blame a little. What bike btw ? CBR600fx here, although fair weather biker nowadays !

·

The Spb121 has an original design.✔

I understand that Squale has a long history with dive watches. But the Atoms design is too close to the sub.

I won't comment on the San Martin.

Definitely comfortable on the wrist. Doesn’t feel top heavy or anything. I’m pretty OCD about a lot of things and the compass doesn’t bother me a ton, so unless you are exceedingly sensitive I wouldn’t worry about it.
