Quartz or automatic or both?

For some reason I can’t bring myself to buy and wear quartz watches.

It’s a symptom of my snobbery. Curious if I’m alone.

I prefer automatics or manual wind but quartz is convenient and easier when you are in a hurry.

There is room for both in my collection. I'm a fan of solar.

·

I prefer automatics but willing to buy if quartz have no seconds hand.

·

I enjoy a healthy mix of both. The ease of picking up and go of quartz cannot be denied, plus the robustness of a lot of quartz movements. And adding solar? Even cooler!

I am also a lover of old and traditional things, so manual/automatic movements also greatly appeal to me.

I say why limit yourself to just enjoying one type? Enjoy the breadth of watch movements!

·

Both for me!

·

I enjoy automatics more because it’s less prone to be obsolete in short spans of time, like electronics tend to be. It seems more like craftsmanship to have a mechanism ticking away, built for a sole purpose.

·

There's a use case for quartz. Sometimes you just need a "grab and go"watch and don't want to bother with winding/setting the time.

·

I have plenty of both.

·

If you have an mech you need a quartz to keep it set to time of day. quartz is wear and forget.

·

There’s room for both in a collection.

·

I like them and wear them, but I wouldn’t spend top dollar on a quartz piece (>$1k)

·

I'm always looking for the lightest titanium watches and a mechanical movement just adds too much weight.

Plus I like that quartz is tougher and just convenient to throw on without setting the time.

I am confident that many members have spouses who probably own more than 1 or 2 timepieces being married to watch guys, my wife does not object to the occasional gift of a watch but warns me that she is ok. She cherishes her Cartier Roadster her daily watch from when our daughters were still young children, it is quartz, battery died during the lock downs but when I took the watch in to my ad, watchmaker said the ETA quartz movement was trash. I accepted blame felt that I should serviced the battery sooner but the wmaker said the movement just died nothing to do with a cell. Of course I changed the movement works fine but I did tell the Mrs. Suddenly that watch doesn’t feel the same to her. I gave one of my daughters a $500 Hamilton when she was in middle school, she is now a young executive working in finance that watch will be around until she retires with some TLC. A quartz might also but I would not bet on it.

I think the brand of the watch is way more important than the type of it's movement. I find quartz watches very useful, durable and fun to own. You just set and forget (more like set and enjoy them.) Mechanical or automatic watches are also great, but I really can't say if they're better. They are just different.

·

Cheeky response, but I'll take a FP Journe Elegante anytime! That's quartz. I also own a GS spring drive - that's technically quartz, right?

I also own a simple black swatch, which is my anti watch watch when I want to swim or something.

·

Prefer mechanical for the romance of it all. But, can’t deny quartz for the ridiculous accuracy and reliablity. I have 1 quartz watch, I use it to set the time for all my others.

Defffffinetly prefer autos and it’s the micro-machinery that drew me back to the watch world, but there are some nice quart out there.

Man imagine if someone came up with a mechanically driven digital watch! Like the moment runs a very tiny alternator and had a micro capacitor to act as a ballast for even charge…. I need to become an engineer, brb

I think that's called "Kinetic Drive"? Maybe? Or maybe that's different.

I own 2 quartz Omega Seamasters. They are the same quality and looks of the automatic verisons. They function even better than the auto verison as well. Less servicing costs, and you don’t have to worry about messing up the movements in them. Wear on vacation, hiking, to work etc. They were built to be used (within reason). At the end of the day it’s up to you but me personally, a quartz built by a great brand is worth it because I don’t have to worry about damaging it.

P.S 99% of the time non watch people only really care about brand recognition. Watch snobs can go pound sand if they think quartz is dumb.

Hmm I’ll check that out!

What is the purpose of a wrist watch? To display the time accurately. Period. When you get into the asthetics or anything else concerning a wrist watch then that’s subjective. I own every type of watch under the sun, yes even have a sundial in the back yard, and I like mechanical (hand winding) watches. Why? Because of the connection, it needs me and I may need it. Of course we would all go with an automatic given the choice, and last I checked we still have that choice.

·

I'm a dial guy. I don't particularly care what's inside. If it brings the price down, then all the better. That being said, I wouldn't want to replace all my automatics with quartz watches. A good mix of both seems like the way to go for me.

Just one letter: G

·

Better you buy a Kinetic watch or Autoquartz watch that tick like a quartz but move like a mechanical.

·

Thanks for sharing that thread. My view is that SD is both a mechanical watch and a quartz watch. Either way, semantics and I love it.

·

I own multiple quartz watches, mecha-quartz & solar. I don't mind at all the quartz option, but if I can get a watch that is available in both quartz or auto, yeah I'd tend to choose automatic. I guess I'm in love with the sweeping second hand.

·

Sometimes it comes down to cost. One of these is quartz. The other is an automatic. The price difference can be vast. Both are made by a quality watchmaker.

I actually have an even split of automatic to quartz, five of each, although three of the quartz are MoonSwatches.

·

Both

·

I have both, but i do prefer Quartz not only you can get Quartz models cheaper than Mechanical watches, they are less prone to mangentic fields affecting the time keeping and you can even get HAQ models for not much and Solar quartz is also pretty awesome, just keep it in the light and it always be pick up and go.

·

I like mechanicals. And apple watch. And quartz. And solars. There..

·

I absolutely hate quartz watches...172 watches and not a quartz among them
