Do you swim with expensive watches?

I always do but I know some watch geeks who refuse even with 10 or 20 bar ratings. Curious how the community feels

I have no doubt that my Speedmaster with 5bar WR would do just fine splashing around in a pool, but I have other watches that are intended for water and wear those instead.

·

Have have no problem swimming with any of my rated watches, but I won’t take them on a beach 👍

·

I wear all mine in the pool and at the beach from scuba dude to Pelagos. That's what they are designed for.

Having said that I haven't yet swum with my date just even though it has 100m WR. I think of it as a dress watch and treat it accordingly.

·

I almost never swim, but if I did, I’d wear something less expensive, or no watch at all.

·

As long as they have 10bar WR or more, I'll use them for swimming

·

I suspect a lot of the reason people won't wear expensive watches in the water comes down to people spending more money than they are actually comfortable spending.

My philosophy is; if I can't afford to replace the watch if anything happens to it, I can't afford to buy the watch.

Any watch I own that could be called expensive would not be rated for it.

Nobody ever asks why. Why is anyone wearing a watch underwater? If there is a good reason, whatever. Anyone got a good reason?

Before most of our births, the only way to do such a thing was with a reasonably expensive watch. That was many decades ago. Plenty of double digit watches will do the same job. Tell me how this is all not folly.

·

I do not swim in a pool with my Fossil watches rated a 200meters, so I woudn't even put my luxury watch even close to water.

·

I don't have expensive watches. Therefore I do not swim with expensive watches.

To be frank, I don't remember the last time I went swimming. It's been a few years for sure.

Even then, I don't shower with mine on even if they are rated to withstand depth beyond my diving ability.

I can think of a few....one surprisingly not necessarily job related...

Being a non-drinker, amongst a career field full of peeps who work hard, party harder, makes me the ultimate designated driver for let's just say, interesting unit (EOD) combat dining in's, going aways, welcomes, Halloween, Squadron stuff, etc...been a few times where I ended up in some way in, on, or under the water. Granted even 5 bar is good enough for wading pools, and swim up bars.

But still, stuff got soaked, some ruined, watch stayed fresh tho! 😎

Was scrolling through my photos and found these pics of my BB58. I use for swimming and other activities.

This does give a serious answer to the old gag about people fearing being pushed into pools (apparently a major concern among the Speedy cult) , but really doesn't have that much to do with deliberately swimming. It's sort of the difference between deliberately driving into a wall and being in an accidental collision. Planning for disaster is great while courting it, regardless of safety preparation, seems foolish. I see the risk, not the benefit.

I wish I could go for a swim lol, been so hot

Yea id agree for the most part.

One caveat, anytime I'm in the field, I could legit end up swimming, for training or real world. Be that a torrential downpour, vehicle rollover, water crossing, or some type of school.

So for my day to day use, I get my regular wear pieces seals checked. Maybe not as often as they should but I do attempt. Especially on ones that have meaning associated with them.

I also snorkel, fish, kayak, etc with a watch on to have a rough estimate for how long it's been.

No cell phone, cuz if I'm doing outdoorsy stuff, I'm not working, and my family is also around, so NO interruptions and be there in the momeny. I have an Olympus Tough TG-6 for pics. Might be adding a Nikonos V, but film is proving harder and harder to source. More so now that Fujifilm is slowly stopping production on some types of film.

The obvious answer to your question is the same as the answer for why anyone wears a watch at any time... To know the time.

I don't need a specific reason to what to know the time, I just want to know it. Maybe I have chicken thawing on the counter, or laundry that needs to be changed over. Maybe I have a hot date later that day.

Watch collecting is folly if we all just buy based on need.

Swim with luxury watches and Bull Legged Women and swim between their legs, for all you M. A. S. H fans. 🤔

·

Swimming with my most expensive dive watches is one of my favorite things to do and in no way hurts them

·

I give my watches a regular thorough cleaning in the sink so I'm glad they are waterproof for that reason alone. But I don't swim with a watch mostly because I'm afraid to ding it playing ball in the pool with the family.

·

I know guys who will not even wash their hands wearing a sub in fact they just never wash their hands. Chicken or egg question.

·

I haven't found a shoal of them, to try it with.

·

Except for one watch I received as a gift with 30m WR, I buy my watches to endure whatever I do. If that’s swimming, which it sometimes is, then the watch goes with me. I’ve done that with many of my watches, even my Speedy. Though I do seal checks every couple years and have had them replaced before on a watch when it failed. My Rolexes have been through everything with me, swimming, ice dunking, saunas, mountain biking, chain sawing, mountain biking, chopping wood… lots of things that some people shun. But if I have to baby them to keep them alive then I don’t want them.

·

If it has decent WR, I'll wear it while giving my kids a bath or sometimes when I'm taking a shower at night. Otherwise, not really. Takes two seconds to take off. I'm not actively checking time (for the most part) while doing these things.
