Don’t Post Pictures of Your Apple Watch (unspoken rule?)

So hear me out, I’ve seen a ton of digital Casios on here. A few digital Timex pieces too. Hell, I’ve posted photos of digital casios myself. But no one seems to post their Apple Watch? Wondering why?

It’s a watch, just like the Casio.

Some will argue 🙋🏻‍♂️, it’s more luxury than Casio.

It has undoubtedly changed the watch industry (more non watch people have started wearing watches). Hell they sell more watches than any of the big “watch” brands - 50 million Apple Watches in 2022.

Is it because it’s from a tech company?

I’ll admit, I wear my Apple Watch the most. I wear it while just roaming around my house. I’ll wear it to the supermarket on a quick trip. I’ll wear it to the gym. Hell, I wouldn’t leave on a hike without it.

But, admittedly, I’ve never posted it (or thought to post it) on WRUW. Honestly, not sure why I don’t. That’s why I’m asking.

I think people fear the jealous luddites with their spiritual and sophist claims. They evoke some inferiority complex amongst the hataz.

·

That's the thing. Many, not all, but many don't see it as a watch. It's more of a part of your phone or computer. To many, Apple Watch is as much a watch as a phone is a clock. Personally, that's how I see all smart watches. It tells the time but use it for so many other things. You can post it if you want. Most won't hate on you. Many people on here wear one. Some will even wear a watch with it.

·

Wrist worn computers, killing the watch industry. Probably doing more damage to our hobby than the quartz crisis did in the 70's and 80's.

The "enemy" basically.

Personally I despise them, I only have a phone because of work & rarely take it out with me - if I'm out I don't want to be contacted/tracked/being ignorant to the person I'm with.

Hopefully you won't see any Apple watches on here

·

Like @Polishmadman says, it tells time, but it's more computer than watch.

I think most of us here just want to see & discuss non-wrist computers. It's not hating to want to see & discuss other things.

·

I post my Apple Watch on WRUW whenever I I wear it. To me a watch is a watch, if Apple Watch is a computer then g shocks their circuits are computers too

Is that it? The difference between that and the quartz digital Casios we see on here is the fact that it also has smart phone functionality?

I get that, if that’s the dividing line.

Query, Casio hasn’t damaged high horology?

I mean. There are a ton more Casios or other quartz watches here than mechanical watches. It least it seems that way.

I don’t think it’s hating either. Just trying to figure out how digital Casios are different. Maybe it’s because the Apple Watch does more? And I guess the line is drawn when you can do more than just tell time (although I guess when a mechanical can do that, then those are “complications”)

Not arguing with you. Because I don’t post my Apple Watch on here. I’m just trying to figure out why I don’t.

·

As others have noted, it's a watch. However so is my incar dash HUD, my oven clock, and my microwave clock.

At this point, and again as others have noted, it's a watch kind of in name only, I'd personally call it wearable tech/computer/phone. No different than the Samsung/Google/whoever variants.

I have nothing against someone posting them up. Whether or not I care for a smart watch is a moot point if that's what other peeps want to wear.

·

I post mine when it’s on the rotation… since you brought it up?!! Hmmm time for me

To bring it back in the rotation since time for me to work out again since I’m getting a F@tty Bunz…

Why folks don’t post it much?! Dunno?! Perhaps like @PoorMansRolex said… fear of the Hataz!! But I fear no Hataz muhahahaha!!

On the contrary, Casio helped put so many watch companies out of business. Casio, Timex, and Seiko did so much damage to the watch industry. Quartz made watches so cheap, mechanicals couldn't compete. Oddly, the ones that made it out of the 60's and 70's became much more expensive. JLC, Omega, Longines and a few others a decade earlier were making military issue watches. Now those watches are "luxury".

·

I do not own an Apple Watch. Therefore, I cannot post my Apple Watch.

I do not own any Apple products for that matter. Every other tech out there can do just as good a job (for my needs) as any Apple products. In addition, I absolutely despise the user interface! (SHOTS FIRED) Come at me, I'm ready for your assaults. I HATE Apple and everything they do.

I don't mind a good apple though. I'm partial to honeycrisps!

·

My opinion, not throwing derision on Apple Watch owners...but it isn't a watch at all. It is a wearable computing device. Yes, it tells you the time, but so does a microwave, a car (dash clock) and a thermostat. Nobody calls those pieces of equipment watches or clocks.

The Apple Watch is designed be strapped to the wrist, which is "watch-like," but it could, for example, just as easily have been designed as a pendant to hang from the neck. Then jewelry lovers would be debating whether on not the "Apple Necklace" is an actual necklace.

I think the majority sentiment here is that this group is deeply interested in and celebrates the design of purpose-built wrist-worn timepieces along with the horological traditions of watchmaking, and that's why Apple Watches and other wearable computing devices are rarely seen in the forum.

I think another big reason is that the Apple Watch is, like a smartphone, a device that is ultimately "disposable" and will hit the recycle bin very soon as newer versions are released and older versions are no longer "supported" by Apple. That just isn't the case with most of the watches we see here, including digital watches.

But again, if you love the Apple Watch, that's fantastic & I say "enjoy!"

I think it's far closer to a phone than a Casio with some tech in it. The casios have electronics to perform specific functions, while an apple watch is a screen and computer that could be set up to do just about anything a phone can. It's sort of one step removed from a watch in my eyes. Even my g shocks with sensors are tools that perform certain functions. The apple watch is more like a computer than can use certain tools, rather than the tool itself. Personally, apple watches also have sort of a non-design, similar to phones, where you're not really seeing the object so much as the information it's displaying. Visually, they're completely uninteresting to me.

They have plenty of uses for people who want those, so it's not like I don't understand why people wear them. It's just not a watch in my brain, or at least represents none of the elements I like about watches.

If it makes Rolex available and affordable then I hope everyone decides to get a smart watch. It’ll be the “smart crisis” 🌈

It's already called that. Seriously, there's graphs , charts and statistics that show the massive impact smart watch sales are having on our industry - & the industry response is to make those previously easily attained watches as luxury products, so Rolex et al (once tool watches) get more & more pricey not less...

The "smart watch crisis" is every bit as threatening to traditional Watchmaking as the Quartz crisis, if not more.

·
Inkitatus

Look up the quartz crisis.

Basically, quartz watches almost killed the mechanical watch industry in a decade. Seiko were the main culprits, with many traditional Watchmaking companies going bust. That's where Swatch came in & "saved" the Swiss watch industry and giving them the financial clout to buy up many brands and preserve them .

The same is happening now, with traditional Watchmaking loosing sales to the evil smart watch - we could well be living in the final death throws, who knows what will happen in the next ten or twenty years....

Casio are very much their own thing, with the biggest appeal obviously being a low price & because of that are often the most common route into the hobby - it shouldn't be an interest that you need lots of money to get into or enjoy.

Personally I do own quartz watches, but not digital - that's my personal line in the sand. We're all different & draw our line at different points or don't have a line & welcome the new technology.

To each their own, but I hope that explains why Apple watches don't get much love on here. 😉👍🏻

I am aware of the quartz crisis and the history of high horology.

But that’s the point isn’t it?…Apple Watch is hated on here but Seiko and Casio are celebrated - digital and/or quartz versions.

So maybe 10 years from now, the Apple Watch will fill this app with custom mod watch faces? 😂

Aight man

Dumber or smarter they just watches to me.

·

I only wear my Apple Watch at the gym these days. It feels liberating to be away from the notifications and work emails.

·

I see it as a wrist worn phone.

It is as much a watch as my cell phone is a watch if you ask me.

If I strap my cellphone on my wrist would you define it as a watch?

Same difference.

·

I’ve posted my Apple Watch on WRUW and I wear it all the time when I’m home but I don’t consider it a watch like my other watches. Like I don’t feel any connection to it. I can upgrade it or replace it whenever without missing it for a second. It’s a piece of convenience and that’s all. No emotions involved.

·

I think of an Apple Watch as a proxy of your phone. I’m not gonna hate on anyone for wearing one but My wife doesn’t see the appeal of normal watches now that the smart watch is a thing so in that regard I can totally see @Inkitatus ‘s point.

I think TGV made an excellent point in one of his videos, basically saying that there’s no individuality with everyone wearing Apple Watches. We all become drones to apple’s machine. I guess I’m just a hipster and prefer aesthetics and uniqueness over what the norm seems to be today.

I see the digital watches as actual watches as they primarily tell time, day and date. Just like many analog watches. Sure as years have passed functions increased.

There is a point it jumps to being a wrist worn computer. It might be hard to define that as we have digital watches measuring heart rate, steps, etc. So that’s a computer function right?

All I know is the Apple Watch and other “smart watches” are clearly computers/phones and to me lose the definition of a watch.

·

If you want to post pictures of it I have no problem but it just looks like whatever is on screen at the time. I don't class it as a watch because a watch will still work in 10 - 20 years if looked after but an apple watch won't, it will stop getting updates and become obsolete, a watch will never be obsolete.

·

I don’t own one thus why I have not posted one. I also do not think of it as a watch despite its name. It is a smart device that tracks you and happens to be able to tell the time. I honestly believe it is called a watch only because how it is worn and is the closest name for people to related to.

·

I don't have one

In my case, I generally don't react to the posts of mis-named smart watches, because I'm not here to see & discuss the wrist computers.

So you may not because they don't get as much attention. At least from me.

Agreed. The Apple watch, doesn't look like a watch, looks like a small tablet. However, Garmin, Samsung, Suunto, GShock etc, although 'computer' watches, still look and feel like a watch.
