Nostalgia...

Like many of you, a watch became part of my life in my youth. A close friend. A constant companion. And probably, like many of you, we were gifted a watch (maybe from a parent or family member) and it was our one and done, grab and go, GADA watch that probably didn’t get replaced until we lost it or it broke (maybe from that bike crash on the old Diamondback BMX). I’ve previously shared a photo of my first watch; a Swatch, from the mid-80s. It got used and used and used until the plastic lugs gave out.

I recently came across this old photo of me with my Swatch on, and not surprisingly, a knife in my hand (#watchandblade, baby!). My friend has on a sweet Max Headroom shirt on.

Anyone else have any childhood photos wearing a watch from yesteryear?

Nice Conrad! Not sure what kind of watch it is, probably a Timex.

I definitely was given a Fossil in the early nineties, and I’m sure there was a Swatch, but I remember my favorite being a Freestyle Shark digital. I grew up on the Jersey Shore and I feel like anyone near a beach wanted one of those colorful little watches. Alas I have no photos. I know the brand has been revived and I guess I could buy one but realistically I’m never gonna wear it.

Meh… maybe one day.

Cool! I remember the Freestyle watches. Some friends had them very far away from the beach. . . in Phoenix. 😆

Ha! That’s awesome!

Cool memory. Thanks for sharing.

Not me wearing it but my Dad. I’m the baby in the photo 😅. This was in 1990 and he was wearing his Omega Seamaster. He gave it to me around 15 years ago and Ive been using it since.

Just look at those shorts!! What can I say, it was the 80s.

I'm with my Aunt and Uncle in Jersey, it would have been about 1982. I'm not entirely sure what the watch is.. Casio F87W maybe.

Man - this was me circa ‘97? ‘98 maybe? This is the earliest I remember wearing watches!

I wish I did. I’ve tried so hard to remember what watch I even had in high school. I must have needed to know what time it was… but no memory whatsoever.

I got a boys size Omega when I was 13, but I lost it almost immediately to my parents dismay 😰

Those shorts are back in style and they're rock'n the in the NBA lol 🤙🏽

I can't remember my first watch, or the second, or even the third. They were just cheap watches I was gifted or bought for the sole purpose of telling me the time.

The first watch that I bought with a clear idea of what I wanted was the AW-560, one of the first ana-digi G-Shock, but that was when I was already an adult.

I'll never forget my first watch ... An iron man back in the mid 80a. My parents got me one, I wore it to school, left it in the gym locker, and it got stolen. Doh. I don't remember another watch until 2009 or so when we bought our first house and I bought my first watch I remember: a Columbia ani-digital thing that I still have and did nothing but change straps and batteries for about 12 years. Then I picked up a couple fossils and it was all down hill from there.

Thanks for the memories!

My second watch was another Swatch. Played basketball with some friends and left it courtside. Never saw it again. Sorry about your Ironman.

I have memories of my first watch when I was a kid in the 90's.

It was a digital with a blue backlight, but no idea of the brand or model sadly.

Great great stuff

M M M M M M MAX HEADROOM!!

😂

Image

Loved the wacky 80s, that decade was my transition from grade 5 into University

Will dig around for some pix when I visit my parents on the weekend, I know I’ve got some!

This is the hollow shell of my Seiko chrono I bought in grade 8 (early 80s) with paper route funds. A cool buddy had got a blacked out Seiko chronograph so I had to get something similar!

My first was a Timex Something-Or-Other, given to me by my parents as a Xmas gift waaaay back in the mid-late 1960's ... I don't have a pic of me wearing it, but am sure my Mom likely does 😀 I'll have to ask her!

Timex was many of our "gateways" and is why I still, 50+ years later, still have a soft spot for the brand! 👍

·

Yeah, I remember my first Seiko, and how my brother almost immediately lost it after I gifted it to him.

Awesome! I was still pretty young in the 80s, but I have my older sister to thank for introducing me to some of the great bands of the 80s. Though I am happy to say I never dressed or did my hair like A Flock of Seagulls.🤣

Oh man, this brings up another interesting bit... We have such a fascination with watches and if we give something to someone who does not share our obsession, it's hard to be emotionally detached if they don't swoon over the watch or wear it often, like we would. Glad he didn't lose the Seiko!

Yesss! I've noticed your profile shot before and giggled at the memories of Max Headroom. 😍

14 years old, summer of 1991. National Museum of the USAF at Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio:

The watch was a Lorus Mickey Mouse quartz that I seem to recall having acquired the summer before at Disneyland. I don't remember when or why I stopped wearing it or what became of it, but having dredged up these memories late last year, I found myself a new old stock specimen on eBay:
