What would you get next?

I’ve been lucky enough to build a small 3 watch collection over the last 2 1/2 years comprising of a Rolex Submariner No Date 114060, Rolex Explorer II 216570 and most recently a Speedmaster Professional 3861.

I’m content with these three and am keen to pause and just enjoy what I have for a while. That said, the itch will come to add another one but I’m not sure what I would want from here.

I like watches that are timeless and tweak their design over the years rather than release a new look regularly (Omega Seamaster 300m springs to mind).

I’m interested to hear what you would get in my shoes. A dress watch is the obvious gap - I like the Cartier Tank XL - but in truth it doesn‘t excite me. Also, I haven’t ruled out just sticking with these three.

Thanks in advance!

I would suggest considering a Santos De Cartier. I also have the 114060 and 3861 based Sapphire Sandwich, and feel that the WSSA0037 Santos De Cartier is a great complement to them. It comes with both the bracelet and a rubber strap, and changing between them takes only a few seconds with the tool less QuickSwitch system, letting the watch easily switch between casual and dressy. It also adds some shape diversity.

They were three of my first watches too, but I would suggest something German, dressy, and adds some color to the monotone collection? Not to mention perhaps the best case back you will find under $10K. It also dresses down great with a pair of jeans and a polo. The  Glasshute Original PanoMaticLunar in green.

Otherwise, if you do not want to go German, perhaps a colorful Grand Seiko with a Spring Drive like the SLGA007.

DJ41 is a great suggestion. I’ve tried a few on and like the black/grey/blue dials with a smooth bezel, jubilee bracelet. It adds a bit more versatility too in that you can wear it with anything vs a Tank that’s a bit more limited.

·

I think @baloo681 has a point. Maybe an MRG wouldn’t look too out of place and I wouldn’t trust any of those as a beater. Of course having worked in construction since I was 16 and having 2 small kids probably colours my thinking there. 🤔

I tried a Santos on before as wasn’t keen but probably worth a revisit to check again, thanks.

Haha so true. I’ve got a DW5600 and love it

You collected a beautiful 3-piece collection. If these 3 watches are your first without dipping your feet in anything else in your path to where you are I say you are a true collector of Classics in it’s truest sence. Depending of budget I suggest a dress watch like Cartier Tank, JLC Reverso, Rolex Datejust, Rolex Daydate (talking about tweaking a design) or a nice Calatrava, all the usual stuff.

If you like vintage there is a ton of watches. Help us out with any of your preferences and likeings including budget I think the community will give you plenty of suggestions for a 4th and a …

Both excellent suggestions, thanks. I’ve not tried on either but will do now. You’re right on some colour, it is needed.

The Santos (as with most watches from Cartier) can be quite polarizing - people tend to either really like them, or really dislike them. If it doesn't hold a strong appeal, it's probably best to stay away from. When I first started collecting about 4 years ago, I had absolutely zero interest in Cartier, but over time I started to gain an appreciation for several of their offerings, especially the Santos De Cartier. There are days when it holds no appeal to me at all, and other days where no other watch will do.

·

if you're looking for something slightly outside the box in terms of non round shaped watch cases, there's the usual suspects from JLC and Cartier:

-reverso, tank, santos, basculante, roadster (my personal fav), tortue

I would also suggest some Longines like the evidenza or the dolce vita. Franck Muller if you really dig the tonneau shape or want something unique like the crazy hours

Thanks for the welcome and great suggestions. DJ and Tank I definitely like. A Reverso I have tried on and really liked it too.

Budget wise all the suggestions so far fall into what I’d be willing to spend so £5k-£10k. My preference is newer vs vintage.

That’s very true. Tastes change!

Thanks. The Roadster crops up more and more now. It’s not one I’d considered.

Longines is a brand I really admire - they have some excellent watches both vintage and modern.

I would add a Santos of Tank to that and call it perfect.

Love your collection very classic!

I'll just put these out there.

Wow, the Salmon Monopusher Chrono looks fantastic! Do you own one of these?

·

Agree with several of the offered comments that you’ve bought well to build your 3-watch collection. As they all squarely fit into the sports / tool watch category venturing toward dress watch seems natural but if you’re not quite there (me too btw) than look for models which I deem “casual elegance” which blends sport elements but are more suitable to dressier occasions.

Several of the current Cartier models outside of the Tank fall in that space including the Santos de Cartier and the Santos Dumont (more dressy than the Santos de Cartier). And of course the Rolex Datejust is basically a quintessential example of that casual elegance category.

·

I would suggest getting a beater watch to have in those places where luxury watches make you a target. $10k plus watches in the bad part of town gets attention...any town

·

That's a fantastic trio you have there! Here are a few suggestions that come to mind for a dressier addition: JLC Master Ultra-Thin, Cartier Drive, IWC Portugieser Automatic, or Vacheron Fiftysix Self-Winding.

Oh. no sadly not I don’t have the budget for that yet maybe one day:)

·

Cannot go wrong with GS. The manual winding variant like the SBGW231 or the new variation of blue and green dial.

·

Not the most popular option but the Rolex Cellini is a nice dress watch with a lot of variations of dials and complications

Wempe is not a brand I’m too familiar with but it’s a lovely looking watch

Wempe is a German brand that has been around for a long time, e.g. they were one of the brands that made the original flieger watches in WW2. They are best known these days as a watch retailer, but still make some very fine watches themselves.

Me too cheapest watch I've got too

·

If it were me, I'd be looking for a beater. G shock perhaps? There are some things in life that we, as men, must do from time to time, that I'd never want to risk your beautiful collection doing. Just a thought.

·

Three great classics... Now get something off the beaten path. It could be an inexpensive, colorful Swatch or a micro brand; something that makes you smile, but doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Tony you have a perfect 3. I noticed they all have wide bezels with numbers on them. It might be time to put aside the idea of another tool watch and get yourself into a pilots watch. IWC or Oris or something. Yes they are also tool watches but These can double as a dress watch IMHO. Cheers

Thanks! I really like pilot watches.  I’ve dabbled with an IWC Mark XVIII and more recently a Big Pilot 43. Absolute classic designs for both.

I stumbled across this discussion from a few months ago and noticed I went down the same route as you - dress watch the obvious gap, didn’t like them, bought a Datejust 41. 😂

I got mine a couple of weeks ago after passing on a Tank
