Do you have issues with staying the course for a watch you want?

I've been waiting for the Rolex DJ 41mm Wimbledon for 18 months and I'm having difficulty not buying something else. Does the WC family also have issues with staying the course?

Thanks I'll need it. I'm looking at the new grand seiko sbgj273. If i don't go into my local AD and look at this watch I should be fine lol. Gotta stay away 🙄

Yeah, it’s pretty hard to stay the course. I’d make a list of watches that I like, work towards one, and end up buying another entirely different watch 😂

·

So I decided my next watch would be a Flieger. I'd narrowed down the list and totally settled on this one...

So then I went and bought this watch 🤦‍♀️

I had some free time after taking care of an early morning errand for the Mrs decided to stop into a multi brand shop that also houses a Rolex boutique, nobody noticed me until the Asian lady who works the Rolex shop offered to show me around after I said that I was just looking. This was a few years ago but steel sports Rolex watches were scare, quite a few Datejusts and lots of 36mm gold and steel models under glass. I don’t know where she was hiding the watch but just before the armed guard buzzed me out the nice lady produced a 41mm Wembledon dial Datejust on an oyster style bracelet that I could have bought at list. Investigated the watch on the secondary market since but last I checked guy wanted 5k over list, probably for the exact watch that I turned down.

With watches I have the attention span of a toddler on a sugar rush. If it's out of stock or pre order I loose interest and move on. I always seem to have watches sitting in a basket waiting. 🤷

·

My wife was on the waitlist for the exact watch you are waiting for and still is with are usual AD, 20 months so far ,we happened to visit another AD and got the call after 4 months for the exact model, luckily she's not a watch nerd so didn't have a wandering eye and she's happy to borrow mine

I tend to fill these itchy gaps with casios. 😅

I bought a much saved for grand seiko from an ad and had them throw snoopy in at the last minute! Even knowing I was getting a long awaited new watch I couldn’t resist this one too.

Nope, always keep my eye on the prize.

This does not mean that other watches do not enter the picture and aquired while waiting to get the prize. 😉

I've tried a bunch of other stores most of them seem to have a fake wait list. The AD that I'm currently waiting on seems to be a little more legit since I was able to get a Airking in 2-3 months with only having 2 watches bought previously but who knows 🤷🏽‍♂️

·

Yeah I bought a Brew metric black and gold to tie me over lol

Definitely not a bad idea 🙄

As long as it's just my eyes wandering & not my bank account, I'm good.

I definitely bought others while (impatiently) waiting for the one I wanted. I've wanted this one specific, exact Seamaster AT. Seemed I was always one step behind it. But in my constant search, I came across two different De Villes I really liked. Bought one. A month or so later, I see the other De Ville in a different color which I really liked. Bought it. Three months later, guess what? Yup, the elusive AT. Jumped on it. Well, here they are. The result(s) of my impatient 2023. But I'm delighted too...

I agree, it's hard. the plethora of inexpensive options out there for $500 or less make it hard to stay the course and save for the $1000 and above. I'm trying to save up for a Junghans and even though it's not that expensive comparatively buying any watch right now takes away from saving (except for maybe a casio :)

I think it's worth staying the course - it's easy spend the same amount of money on what your saving up for on 12 cheaper watches that you don't even wear, harder sometimes to get the watch you actually want, but it's worth it! Quality over quantity is what I'm trying to learn myself lol

I have sold all but two of my Rolex's..They dont deserve our money. There are so many other great brands out there. But I understand if it is what you must have...Enjoy the hobby

YES. Quite a bit, in fact. I'm working on it.

·

It's not really about the one watch for me but I definitely stay on course. I have a list of a handful watches I want. When I have the money I start to shop for those watches. When the right watch presents itself, I jump.

That's a short wait for the air king, hopefully soon for the datejust

·

Hmmm, good question….all I can say for sure is that’s a massive list of watches I WANT, but only a few that I will KEEP. That being said, I no longer just outright buy from my want list, but will try them on, ideally from a friend, or an AD (haha), or just satiate my interest with a bunch of YouTube reviews

Yeah that's what I thought so that's why I went back to that AD but I've waited 18 months for the wimbledon.

Lol stay strong my friend but it's definitely easier said than done.

I did at the start of my addiction. But lately, it's gotten very easy. It's because I've realized that what I value most is 'heritage'. Now I know most of that is BS marketing. But history is what I mean, and it does hold value for me. And the vast majority of watches (even great ones from micro brands) can't offer this. So it helped to really narrow down the choices.

I would also add that everyone has their own priorities in collecting, and we are each entitled to buy what makes us happy.

·

I ran a post sort of about this recently: https://www.watchcrunch.com/timepiece.pete/posts/thinking-about-not-getting-the-expensive-watch-211578

I've been deliberating over spending my Rolex pot on a bunch of other watches. I've not, yet.

·

Honestly I tend to get obsessed with whatever I'm interested in for a few months, then either pull the trigger or not.

You've been waiting a year and a half, I think most would start to wander astray from rolex at that point, one of the many reasons rolex ain't for me
